Hi guys

Need some advise on all the 'new' technical specs etc

Will be my 1st pc gaming rig

I need every thing

Want to see if I can get everything here, will buy over 3 - 4 months, so not in a hurray

What would you advise for cpu, psu, gpu, ram etc. I just need some technical background on new technology and models and what to look for in 2nd hand market. Want to future proof as much as possible, although I know there is constantly upgrades and newer models etc

Was thinking along lines of the following:
CPU i7, but how does the newer and older model numbers work
GPU 6 or 8gb, what will be best here
RAM 16gb, what do I need to look out for?
Motherboard no idea
PSU no idea
Case anything nice I'm sure will do
SSD 500gb, which brands are better

Thanks all in advance...

Some important info required:
What is your overall budget?
Do you also require screen mouse keyboard and speakers/headphones?
Will you be gaming at 1080p/1440p?
Do you care about best graphics, best refresh rate, or both?

12 - 15k excluding mouse kb and monitor, is this doable?

Please make suggestions here as well

I'd prefer to go with 1440p and 144hz screen (24 - 27") and see what is best quality I can get on those

I have a 1080ti,and 1440p. The only way I would be able to achieve constant 144hz or more is to drop settings a bit.
What I'm saying is it requires a beastly card.
A 1070 can do 1440p 60hz on max settings.
A 1060 can do 1080p 60hz on max settings.

I wouldn't recommend less than 16gb ram these days. Try go 6th Gen. i5 or i7.

Thanks for that. To maybe save some money will go for a 1060 and stay on 1080p for now' and will save some on monitor that way as well

Is 7th gen then newest?

Sent from my SM-J400F using Tapatalk

9th Gen has just come out.
I just said 6th Gen cos it utilizes DDR4 ram. Anything older is still ddr3 which I wouldn't bother with any longer.

Ok so 6 gen or higher cpu

DDR 4 ram 16 or 32gb

Either 1060 6gb or 1070 gpu

Will psu power only relay on gpu power needs or something else also needs consideration?

What to look out for in a motherboard?

Thanks

32gb ram is not needed at all. Unless you do video editing etc.
600w is enough, but Google for psu calculators. There you can build an entire pc and they give an estimate on system power requirements.

Motherboard choice is a tricky one. So many options... I'm sure others can have their say.

This, as above, with advice to get a Z170 or Z270 board.

You might not get an unlocked CPU at first but you may do later on and Z boards are always worth their money in the long run (look at the number of people wanting 1155 boards for a 3770 or 3770K).

I personally think that MSI has the best BIOS layout for noobs and Gigabyte has the worst but it depends on other factors such as features and availability.

things you will needed:

16gis ram min
both my pc draw under 500w so get a 550w-650w plat psu with long warranty
1080ti and gysnc 144 - is alone arround 17 to 18k - stick to 1080p and be happy - lol

Great thx

So a Z board with a K cpu

I'll look out for that wattage plat psu. Is modular needed?

And stick to 1080p, never realised 1440 is still so expensive

I'm running a 4th generation i5 and i recently upgraded to 16gb ram which made a world of difference.

I would suggest getting a K series cpu and a Z motherboard as suggested. Preferably 6th or 7th generation as it runs ddr4 and you will have room to overclock.

Spend money on a good quality power supply. No use you have awesome components with a cheap psu. I'd suggest getting a bronze rated cpu as a minimum, 550-600W depending what you going to run.

If you can get an SSD at the same time it's a bonus, otherwise upgrade to one later on down the line.

Go with a 1080p monitor and look at a gtx 1060 6gb card. This gpu runs games really well at 1080p. I suggested the 6gb card because having more memory on the gpu helps with most games using about the 4gb+ of ram. If you can stretch your budget get a 1070 because you can always go 1440p later down the line.

Thx for the info, getting a lot here that i was looking for

With regards to ram, how does matching/pairing work

What speed (mhz) should I opt for?

I'll get decent psu with ssd from start then

And then see what comes up in regards to 1060 or 1070 in classifieds

I went thru the whole low. latency and i did.not see a diff myself. I running cl9 timings on dd3 1600.

Might be diff for ryzen tho

I am still 4th gen and i will only change a octocore ryzen and great ddr4 then.
I always believe the jump must be worth it.
Going from 4th gen to 5th or 6 gen does not seem worth it to me.

Note: cases, fans and psu - u dont wana change often so kit out proper. I bought my m700 coolermaster modular nearly 10 years and my buds said i was mad to pat 1500. I still got it in my wifes pc and going strong!

Check what is the speed requirement for your cpu and motherboard you decide to buy. I was running 2x4GB at 1600 but a 2x8GB 2400 came up for sale which i jumped at. I wasn't too fussed about the speed but i wanted 16GB. 1600 was the minimum i would have bought for DDR3.
Preferably purchase ram in pairs to make use of dual channel i.e. 2x8GB sticks in order to fill up two slots at a time.

I get ocd - need my ram slots filled- lokl

You should consider Ryzen as well. It seems to be out selling Intel at the moment and it has matured alot since launch.

Ryzen does show good value- i agree. That 1800x looks like a nyc upgrade path

Looks good! You will also need a decent cpu cooler.
There are plenty out there. A tried and trusted air cooler is the Cooler master hyper 212. Can't go wrong with it.
I'm nut picking, but perhaps the ram can be 3000mhz or higher.

I see there is a combo sale thread with this mb z170

ROG MAXIMUS VIII FORMULA | Motherboards | ASUS South Africa

Specifications show can take a 6th gen cpu, will it work with 7 as well?

Am i right in saying sky and caby works on 100 and 200 chipset

But for coffee you need a 300 chipset?

If budget is tight, I think consider not going with a k series cpu. I used to go for them but never ended up needing to overclock, so stopped bothering with the extra cost (Usually about a thousand more than the standard version). That said, I always still went for mobos that are suited for overclocking.
