Hi guys!

I am a newbie junior dev and have been wondering about what other careers paths from here could look like. I'm really enjoying the dev work right now but also feel myself being pulled in 100 other directions. There are so many exciting career paths within IT and lately I have been wondering what else is out there. Some of the fields that seem really interesting to me are CyberSec, Clound Engineering, UI/UX Design, RPA and BI.

So, I'd love to read about your experiences as you've navigated your careers and your thoughts on long-term career planning, switching roles, hot cross buns, etc.

If you're in JHB/PTA/Centurion and would meet up to let me pick your brain, I'd buy you a coffee for your time šŸ§

Im 20, turning 21 this year with about 4 years of work experience in mostly fullstack development. I'd say it's the most fun for me, as I can do my fun work on the frontend, more logic work on the backend, designing random things here and there, and then database work. For a side thing I do for the shits, I build and host websites for people, which includes UI/UX designing, and then managing SEO, performance, etc. There are many paths and just try do all of them for the first bit, and see which you prefer more.

Howsit dude!

I started my journey shortly after school. I'm 31, and recently took on the role of lead developer in our company. I can give you perspectives on what it is like doing big things and maneuvering in small environments, also what it takes to aim for some ownership and shares if you are at all looking at things like that.

Will take you up on that coffee. I am in Pretoria east but fairly mobile on the bike. :)

Solid advice, I will do. There's no substitute for dipping your toes in and seeing for yourself

I agree to this. Udemy is a great one, you can get some subscription for unlimited courses or whatever, or just find free ones (like CS50), and do lots. In my first job they paid for my Udemy courses, so i did like 20, really helped me broaden my knowledge and get me further
