Merryfair WAU Ergonomic Office chair review

Ixaxa still have the WAU for R4999 ....i think haven't called to check , but on checkout the amount is R4999 still

You know whats weird is I've been eyeing this chair (The high back) on deskandchair.co.za for the last two week and it was R2999, now this morning the price on deskandchair.co.za is R4500 and One Day Only has it for R2999.

This happened again today, been looking at this chair on deskandchair.co.za for a while now and today the onedayonly deal pops up for the same R2999 price and the deskandchair site now shows an inflated price of R4200.

Making me think twice about buying from them.

Thanks mate. Managed to get it at that price. Being delivered tomorrow. I'm broke AF now but the birthday gofundme helped.

Nice! Assume it's the fully upholstered one? Let us know what you think of it (y)

Yeah it's the black fabric one.

I have nothing but good things to say about it. I like to compare on 'bum hours' and I do feel like I can sit on this chair for marathon work or gaming sessions. The seat feels like it's moulding to my bum cheeks so it's almost like the chair is becoming bespoke to me. Other than that, when you have all the adjustments dialled in, this chair is pure bliss.

Probably the best investment I've made in a looooooooong time.

bought mine from Desk and Chair around May sometime. Initially it felt a bit uncomfortable with a-lot of pressure on my hamstrings... But after a day I was use to it and can agree, back pain gone. Great purchase.

Which version did you get? I wonder how the fully upholstered one compares to the mesh back / upholstered seat.

I actually got the white one with mesh seat and back, it gets quite hot in my room so didn't want a upholstered seat. I'm really happy with it.

I also think the padded seat may offer slightly better support for the bum. But have not tried both, only the mesh seat.

Anyone tired the Spinelly?

It used to be cheaper than the wau. I tried both, went with the wau - it felt sturdier with better support and more features.

You won't be disappointed in the Wau. I just prefer the padded seat with the mesh back.
Same. I would have taken the mesh seat if I had bought online. To me it seemed that most of the support came from the padded area at the edge of the seat, behind the knees, and not the actual mesh part.

Dammit. That's what happens when you order before morning coffee.

Didn't realise I had the option to go for material/padded seat, and mesh back. See I did indeed order mesh on seat and back... I suppose if it is really uncomfortable, I can make a plan with one of those ergonomic memory-foam "cushions"... But ja, guess I won't know until it arrives!

So you have the mesh seat, and find it comfortable enough?

How long have you had yours for? Did you get used to the mesh seat in the end?

No, I tested the mesh, and bought the memory foam one. I am glad that I went to test all the variants, I would have bought the wrong one if I didn't.

My mini-review:

Ok. Chair arrived this morning. I was immediately impressed by its heft – particularly the base that the wheels fit into. The chair itself is also not light, which speaks to it being built in a more sturdier fashion than anticipated.

Straight off the bat, I'm very comfy on the mesh – and considering this will end up in a part of the house that can get quite warm (read: bloody hot) in summer, pleased I went with it. That said, I'm not exactly "dainty", so hope it manages to hold up in the long run, which presumably would have been less of a risk for the solid/foam/padded seat. So, time will tell...

Regarding the rest:
[EDITED, based on feedback below]

1.) The controls:

I initially struggled a bit with getting the various controls set, since manuals and the like are few and far between.

I knew that the wind-up/down control on the right, as an extension to the up/down lever, was to control the ease with which the recline occurs. After winding clockwise and anti-clockwise, I couldn't notice much of a difference, and assumed I was missing something.
Turns out I was missing exactly how many turns this little spinner had in it – waaayyy more than I would have thought! I simply wasn't turning it enough in either direction. When I persisted, I found both "limits", and could adjust properly from there.
I prefer it set to its "hardest", meaning it doesn't recline at the slightest bit of pressure backwards – i.e., I need to be intentional about reclining.

The lever on the left appears to simply lock the seat in whatever position it is in, when reclining.
I think(?) I saw a different video, possibly of a different product, that the lever could be used to set/limit how far back the recline would go – and was initially thinking this WAU's lever wasn't acting as it should.
Not really sure what the point of it is, since cannot see a need arising to have the seat locked into recline – and the right-side control allows one to set it to prevent accidental reclining – but so be it.

2.) Headrest:
Still going to have to play around with the headrest height.
Currently, I don't really see it coming into play much since my "default" position appears to have my head tilted slightly forward, to the point where my head isn't touching the headrest in any event...
Not sure if that says something (presumably negative) about my overall ergonomic setup, or whether it's nothing major...

3.) Height of actual backrest:
I have adjusted this a few times, but to be honest, not really sure which of the positions I prefer. To be clear, I'm not uncomfortable or anything, it's just that I don't really notice that much of a difference with it moved more up or down... Guess time will tell, still nice and easy to adjust, which is good. One minor (and obvious) point – adjusting the backrest also requires adjusting the headrest position again – so that's more of a PITA... 1st-world problems, indeed.

4.) Lumbar support:
I always had one of those lumbar cushions that strapped onto my old chair in place. Annoyingly, it would always shift downwards during the course of the day, which had me always readjusting it. Not anymore, really like how easy it is to adjust, and it makes an immediate difference.

5.) Arm rest adjustment:
I think that the fact that I can adjust my arm-rests as much as I can now, has meant I can actually sit a bit lower than I was, which now sees me being able to keep my feet flat on the floor without a footrest, which is apparently a good thing.
Also means that I have nice support for my arms, that is now in-line with my keyboard, which is very comfortable.
Read some reviews that complained about the material getting sticky after long use, but since I have jerseys/tops on in winter, or mostly wear long-sleeve office shirts, hoping this won't be much of an issue.

6.) Reclining feature.
Never had a chair that could do this – as in, properly pivot the backrest and seat together – as opposed to simply having the backrest drop away... Didn't think I would ever use it, but could honestly see myself taking the occasional lunchtime powernap quite comfortably in the chair, which is good to know...

7.) "Waterfall"/drop-off seat.
The seat is quite short, and slopes away, hence the "waterfall" feature name. Read on their site this is to alleviate pressure on the underside of the thighs, behind the knees. Read at least one review complaining about this – which granted, might(??) be an issue for taller persons. I don't find it to be problematic at all – and if anything, means that less of the legs can get hot/sticky during summer... Granted, it does occasionally feel "odd", as in, noticeable – but will most likely get used to that soon.

Overall impressions (after a whopping hour or two of use):

I'm very pleased with this purchase – and just hope it lasts several years!
Given that this is easily the most expensive chair I have ever owned, I guess there is some to-be-expected bias involved.
That said, think this has far more features than the stock standard "gaming chairs" (and bonus >> without the gaudy colours ), and is far above what one would most likely find in a Game/Waltons...
At this price-point, I am very happy that I paid what I did, but cannot help feeling I would maybe have been a bit less enthused had this cost me R6.5k/R7k/R7.5k...

However, I also think that from here on up, there probably isn't much more available in terms of all these ergonomic options, until you start hitting the Herman Miller space (or its equivalents), and then one quickly gets into "stupid-amounts-of-money"...
So all in all, really think the Merryfair WAU is a fantastic option for the price.

I am clearly stupid. Can someone give me a pointer on the left lock button, and the right hand "wheel"?
1.) I gather the left is to "lock" the back of the seat in position? So once engaged, is it not supposed to recline at all, or only recline to the point where it was when the lock was engaged?
2.) The wheel/rotator settitng >> based on the German video on YouTube I found (and no, I don't speak German) – I gather it is supposed to make the reclining "effort" less or more? In other words, slight backward pressure to recline, or a more concentrated effort, correct?
So far, spinning it clockwise or counterclockwise doesn't appear to be making much of a difference to either...
Anyone got any suggestions in that regard? @Firestorm ??
Which way does what?

Which way does what?

@Cassady , the wheel when rotated clockwise stiffens up the recline pressure required when you have the backrest-seat pivot in an unlocked position. Rotate it clockwise until you feel the tension in the wheel tighten up , anti clockwise does the reverse and loosens up the pressure required to recline - NOT ADVISED if you have back problems.

Thanks – I finally started getting it right in the last bit... I simply wasn't turning enough, but eventually hit the "extremes", and can now notice a difference.

The handle on the left – that simply locks the recline in place, correct?
Might have been on a different chair (was watching a bunch of videos at a point) – but some have one still able to recline up to the point that the lock/handle was engaged –– but don't think that's the case with the WAU?
It simply locks, and then if you move forward, the recline "stays in place", so to speak?

Yip , there is no stepped locking on the WAU , its either a fixed locked position or free recline

Hey guys, just received one for the office. I can't seem to adjust the lumbar support. That dial is super light.... Is there something that I'm missing?

Sounds like it may be faulty, the lumbar support dial is definitely not supposed to be light. If your sitting in the chair clockwise turns on the lumbar adjuster should add support

Returned the chair already thanks 👍🏽
