Building a Pc for my kid

If you are interested in the 6th Gen Systems, they are very neat. Speak to me and I can look at taking out the CPU and old GPUs in them and dropping it down t a decent price. You could find a decent 6th gen CPU for around R2000 and then you will have a decent 6th Gen system with a M-atx case thats very neat. All you will need to buy is a decent GPU.

Im just going to read all these posts, take in whatever i can and take it from there. Its getting a bit complicated now lol, that i might as well look into buying a full system

Yup, that's all you can do.
Especially because the nature of 2nd hand also means luck is such a big factor. I mean finding that one deal that seems to be extremely good value for money that lets you tie everything else together.

Yeh but

A) He said Consoles are for losers
B) His dad is useless at building PC's, only good at Saving goals and Hitting bounderies lol

I was gonna bring this up. Suggestions for parts left and right but no one ever considered that someone who doesn't already know there to start looking might not have the aptitude/willingness to assemble something personally.

Another reason why hunting for a mostly complete system is a good idea.

Saw it too hence my R3500 i5 build... Dell Optiplex..

Guys just a heads up, if i can save on costs anywhere please be kind. Im a work alone dad who doesnt earn much. I wheel and deal as much as i can, but i think my kid deserves something decent. I also want to get him involved into something that might be beneficial to him as he grows older. I dont want him to spend long hours with games. I know he is a kid. Hence the reason i said i can only really afford to spend bit by bit each month or when i have some spare cash.

This doesnt have to be anything fancy, just something decent that can play old games and handle some animatiom programmes etc

Your kid sounds like me when I was 9. I was fortunate enough to get my own PC which was decent at the time. I got like 64mb of RAM and a 8GB HDD if I remember correctly.

Anyway, stepping away from the hardware for a second. A couple of really great software products that he can start getting into on a light system:
  • Aseprite (R100) For 2D sprite creation. GREAT place to start.
  • Blender (Free) For modelling.
  • Krita (Free) Great for painting.
  • Unity (Free) Speaks for itself.
Then see if your kid will dig programming. Animation and modelling is great and it is kinda where I started but the money is in the tech, and you can always find a niche or something that hits both spots, like a developer working on Houdini or something. A lot of animators and 3D folk get taken advantage of. They are underpaid for the hours they put in relative to the developers.

Maybe keep an updated list of parts you still have outstanding and PM me the appropriate steam handle, I might be able to hook him up with a copy of Aseprite :)
Inkscape is also a decent free vector editor if he would want to chek that out.
Draw Freely | Inkscape
+1 for Krita

I'm happy to help out and cut costs. Please PM me as soon as you can, I'm toying with an idea.
I have a 2 neat 6th Gen systems up for sale. If you decide that you want to go with one of them let me know then I can see if I can drop down the price to minimum. I also found a 6th Gen core i5 6500 for R2100. We can look at putting together a system for under 4k and then a GPU possibly.

Considering that a 6th Gen is a bit newer you might get better price to performance value. Oh and I almost forgot to mention, I will be happy to do the build for you free of charge.

Check out this guy's channel: RandomGaminginHD. He reviews older tech and shares his experiences with them.

I'll share some of my experiences as well. Don't be shy to buy an OEM motherboard. Had lots of fun with a Lenovo based system that I had.
If you can get it, an X58 based system with something like a i7 980X. Best damned pc build I had until the CPU died.

Like I said you can have the monitor...and you most welcome to see what I built for R3500.00. I can also give you a PSU. Lite On 275w.

So you don't have anything ready to go? Then most of the advice in this thread is pointless as the landscape will look different by whenever you do have a chunk of it together.

Also your wanting to get bit by bit and not wanting to assemble are at odds. The only way to avoid assembley is to get the whole thing in one go. And getting bit by bit on end of life hardware can be dangerous because you could start with a CPU and by the time you have the money for the mobo there aren't any decent choices left or vice versa.

Here's what you do. Start a 32-day call account with him. At the end of each month on the weekend you give him the cash (draw it out) and go to the bank with him. You let him hand the money to the teller and let him be involved in the saving process. Then once you have 4K'ish together we chat again.

Okey, Icemanbrfc, so I have received a message from an anonymous donater who is willing to help out with this build so that we can get a PC together for your child. He is willing to put some money in the tikkie and I am also willing to shave my profit off the bundles I was selling. You are also welcome to go with any other build and PM me and I will still do the build for you free of charge. Let me know what you want and we can look at building something decent together.

For those who want to donate towards the cause please let me speak to one of the moderators so that they can keep charge of the donations that way we all know that this is being done out in the open and as I am a reseller I also have the responsibility to set aside my own personal interests in this build therefore I would like a third party moderator to control any donations towards this build. That is to say if it will go down this way (pending Icemanbrfc's confirmation).

Whatever you decide built with you kid together. so he can learn and understand all the inner workings.

We stll have forum members happy on 2600/2700Ks only now starting to feel the bite a bit, something a 9 year old shouldn't even notice especially given the GPU that fits in a 4K budget will already require throttling back in games so a CPU bottleneck is unlikely to reveal itself UNLESS it's based on insufficient cores.
And I'd say they're still worth more (in practice) than a 3rd or even 4th gen i5.
And in a complete system it's likely to be paired with a better quality motherboard (in other words that still has more life left in it) than something lower down the hierachy.
TO add to this a 2600k @ 4.4Ghz will not bottleneck a 1080Ti , but RAM < 2400Mhz will. :)

No i have cash to spend on certain things, hence me asking in the very beginning what would be the easiest parts to get up front and take it from there on a bit by bit basis.

BTW i got a 2.5 inch 120GB SSD off Greeking that i was going to use in my laptop, but can i use this on this build?

So gents, i would like to give my son a decent PC. He has been asking for a Gaming PC, But i dont have the funds to buy a full system straight right now as i see those are very expensive, so was wondering :

If i had to buy piece by piece, what would be the best way around this. Should i go cheapest bits 1st or what? Im also not going to be afraid to ask any of you okes, if you have any decent spare parts you willing to donate to help me, please let me know. I have never built a pc, so i dont have a clue where to begin with.

He is 9 years old, and besides games, he wants to do animation, so something decent where he can make use of the PC For learning and educational purposes as well.

You okes are the experts

PS: he is not interested in a console
Do you have a decent mouse pad for him?

If net I can give you one. Also have a fan or 2 I can give you

Thanks dude. Sounds great. Just chatting to Maximus, as whatever i get will most likely go to him as i think he will put it together. [emoji1745]‍[emoji3603]

I agreee. start small and add on every month.

I would start with a

4th gen i3
4gb ram
350w PSU
small HDD

Every month sell a part and upgrade it
i have got all of these components, i can build you a machine minus a GPU

If you want to add some RGBness to the build, I have some that you can have. No controller or connector jobbies for it though, and some soldering work will be required. Its just the RGB led strip that I have. Also have a blue perspex case, not sure of the brand though. Has most of the bits and bobs, but two of the connector blocks that hold the case together have had screw threads broken off in them, but case was still solid when I used it (got it that way). Case only takes 80mm fans though, but have fans for the case as well. The top off the case is badly scuffed and scratched. Case and fans yours as well if you want it.

Okey, so I have spoken to Icemanbrfc. So far we have a case, 6th gen motherboard, 4GB ram, SSD and a 450w PSU. The case only has space for 80mm fans but is a pretty neat case and pretty much brand new, never been used. I am still looking for a CPU and then we will ship the system off. If anyone has a 6th gen CPU for a decent price please give me a heads up.

We will still need to buy a GPU for the build but luckily it is not an essential and can be upgraded at a later stage. I will post pictures of the case on here tonight and share with you all.

Any donations will be more than welcome and will go a far ways. If anyone has a decent GPU lying around that they can donate towards this build it will also go a long ways (I know some of you have those R9's).

C'mon everyone, lets make a father and his son happy.

I think I have a green LED 80mm fan. And will give a decent brand new mouse pad with as well.

Thanks to everybody for the advice, help and donations. Im sure he will be chuffed once it is completed.

Those who are donating, will you be able to send to Maximus, as he will be putting everything together.

Not really a 'Gaming' system, but for a start to a 9yr olds Computer Life this may be suitable.

I have an AMD system that I built for testing and messing about that Id be happy to get rid of.

Specs are:
A320M Chipset
8GB Crucial Ballistix RAM
AMD A10-9700 APU + Brand New Stock Cooler + Ryzen Wraith Stealth Cooler as well
R7 370 2GB MSi Gaming X GPU
550W Thermaltake PSU
I will add in a basic chassis as well as build the whole PC for free since it's a pleasure to build a pc.

I can provide screenshots etc if requested
