So gents, i would like to give my son a decent PC. He has been asking for a Gaming PC, But i dont have the funds to buy a full system straight right now as i see those are very expensive, so was wondering :

If i had to buy piece by piece, what would be the best way around this. Should i go cheapest bits 1st or what? Im also not going to be afraid to ask any of you okes, if you have any decent spare parts you willing to donate to help me, please let me know. I have never built a pc, so i dont have a clue where to begin with.

He is 9 years old, and besides games, he wants to do animation, so something decent where he can make use of the PC For learning and educational purposes as well.

You okes are the experts

PS: he is not interested in a console

I'd suggest trying to get a motherboard and CPU at the same time. The problem with buying over time is running the risk of older socket motherboards becoming hens teeth.
So you dont pick up a cpu for lekka cheap only to find you cant get a motherboard for it.

Would those be 2 of the main components to get along with a graphics card? Honestly this doesnt have to be anything fancy, as i see you okes talk constantly about Water cooling etc lol

Watercooling is for looks and overclocking. If you buy and use as intended a normal cooler will be fine. What is you budget for this project? I assume you also need a monitor, KB/Mouse....

I bought an i7 2600 complete with a gtx550ti about 2 years ago for R2500, so there is decent setups available.

Everything is just as important. I Wouldn't go with watercooling for his first gaming PC. It's a complete waist of money and completely not needed If he isnt going to overclock and do some sickening stuff with it.

Mobo, CPU, Power-supply, SSD and RAM would be the most important then wich is actualy all you need :D to get the thing started. After that get yourself a Graphics card, computer case, Screen and Mouse and Keyboard.

My budget is probably around the R4k mark, but that like i said will be split bit by bit, month by month.

4K might be a bit to little since you need a screen and keyboard aswell.

You might just get a nice PC up and running then with that amount. I will check for some items and let you know.

Sweet thanks. This is just to give me an idea, as i dont want to spend plenty. I dont intend for him to play high end games at ultra high settings lol

i5 4590 + ITX 1150 mobo (something around there. ) R1k - 1.5k

120gb SSD - R300

450w PSU - R500

DDR 3 RAM - 8gb - R600 ( Can upgrade to 16gb at a later stage)

Rx 570 4gb - Seems some on here for R2k

CASE: Get a cheapie for now. There are some small ITX's around here

Built this for my SO for studying purposes really. But it plays Battlefield 1 quite well surprisingly :D

Ive found my clocks are more stable with water cooling. When i still had my titan black i also found that my fps was smoother and i dont bench. But it is a costly exercise but once you have it then you can use it for many builds.

Only disclaimer with custom loop : testing stuff and removing stuff when there is a fault is annoying

:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: shhhhhhh

I may have some RAM for you here [Sale] - Corsair Veangance DDR3 2x2gb 1600mhz | Memory / RAM

The thing is its only 2x2gb. So 4gb in total which kind of sucks for a gaming PC. (I wouldn't recommend anything less that 8gb.)

But you welcome to buy the 2x2gb. Ill give you special discount price :D Hook a PM

Oh and I also have a i3 2120 socket 1155 floating around somewhere. But you will need to find a motherboard for it. (again I wouldn't recommend this CPU for a gaming pc)

Unfortunately nothing else in that range but will keep my eyes open for deals :D

You can OC with a decent air cooler. I am on air and running a 5GHz OC, very low noise as well. I often see people using cheap AIO coolers complaining of noise or they have pumps fail down the line. None of that with a decent air cooler. There are just not many good air coolers available in SA.

If the budget is 4K then I think I'd wait till the whole amount is available rather than little by little each month.

That's because A) the platform, especially CPU and mobo will eat up the biggest chunk of that. So at some point there will be a majority chunk anyways.

And B) Looking around the bulk item/complete system section it generally seems like a complete legacy system has lower perceived value than the parts inside it because the individual parts still need to have some sort of value or there's no point in even selling.

So you wait for the complete 4K to be available and then once it is you keep an eye out for something closeby you can drive over and fetch.

By complete I mean something that comes with PSU, Case, Mobo, CPU and RAM, and maybe even the GPU. Then you add in a HDD and some more RAM later (and the GPU if still needed). But the base platform should be assembled and ready to go.

I saw Linus video on YouTube. Basically took a low end system, and added in more ram, changed the GFX Card and a few other things. This was from some office machine. I thought it was interesting

But its also very old and slow, and cant do much with it in terms of upgrading. His son will be having a bad time with it gaming or trying his hand at animation and design.

Yeh please i need proper advice here, as i dont want to waste money on buying the wrong things.

I agreee. start small and add on every month.

I would start with a

4th gen i3
4gb ram
350w PSU
small HDD

Every month sell a part and upgrade it
