Xbox one...arrives tomorrow

Was tempted for an Xbox One, but going to skip it. Mainly because I suspect many of the kinectless Xbox Ones sold here tomorrow are going to have the coil whine issue

The 66 page Xbox forum thread about a Xbox One noise issue when on the dashboard (suspected to be coilwhine, as the noise issue disappears when playing a game)

It seems to be present on a ton of kinect-less Xbox Ones all over the world. Guys have taken their units back to the retailers and exchanged their consoles multiple times (up to 5 times) and many are reporting that all those had the issue.

There seems to be two ways to have this issue fixed is to :
1.) Send your console to Microsoft overseas and have them fix it.
2.) Get the kinect, as the increased power draw of the kinect seems to lessen the issue a lot.

Was going to pick one up on launch but was also put off by all the coil whine issues. Also started Destiny on the PS4 which is taking up all my time xD

So if its said to be the Kinect that actually draws more power lowering the speed of whatever is causing the whine, what if you just plugged some other device in ( external HDD or something ) which draws more current as well? Food for thought what do you think?

I'd try that if I had a One with coil whine.

Although the coil whine might also be like with AMD cards - with certain AMD cards the coil whine is crazy in menu's and loading screens with FPS in the hundreds.
I suspect the 10% performance update when kinect isn't connected might be the problem as without the kinect the FPS might be too high in the dashboard thus causing the coil whine.
That might explain why the problem disappears when the kinect is disconnected as the 10% performance update is not used then.

Also, the whine is only after the mandatory update (the one with the 10% performance update).

I thought about it. Basically want to get this only to play Forza, so not really worth it for me.

Will wait for Project Cars and grab a GTX970 or GTX980. Need something with a low TDP for my Alienware X51.

I see what you did there. I think more people are wining that the 980/970 launch.

I still think the Xbox one has a lot going for it as an all in one device and that's where things are headed.
We have 6 remote controls in the TV room and my mom can't keep up. Having one device that does everything is a great idea.

I am in the same boat.
Apparently the Kinect version does not have it so thinking of getting that version - even though I can't use Kinect in my game room. Just don't want the whine. It will make me break something.

Not here. You had to import an Xbox One if you wanted one. Local launch is today.

I though of that, but :

R6300 - Xbox One, FIFA15 + Forza 5
R8000 - Xbox One Kinect, FIFA15 + Dance something

R1700 more for the Kinect, and I still have to buy Forza so that's actually R2300 more for the Xbox One with the kinect I will never actually use but just bought it to not have a noise which shouldn't be there in the first place...

Yup, provided you don't live in a matchbox apartment (or your folks don't make you stay in a closet), the coil whine is a total non-issue.
