Windows 10 computer 100% disk usage problem

Just check whether it is 100% disk usage with mostly "READ" usage. If yes read on.

I believe your issue is Windows 10 indexing for fast search. On every fresh boot and periodically it has to read most of your HDD and then index everything so that you can very quickly search for stuff.

On older machines/machines with HDD's this sometimes takes forever and bring your machine to a crawl.

Turn Off Indexing in Windows for Better Performance

I do believe this is in the list of things he already tried

Thanks. I'll look into that next...

It's true... It hasn't helped. Memory usage also in the 90s...most odd.

Does it show any processes running in task manager? My one PC ran the search function till I finally disabled it.....

Hi there,

Anyone have the issue described here:FIX Disk Usage 100% issue on Windows 10/8 (Solved) - wintips.org - Windows Tips & How-tos

New laptop running Windows 10. Disk usage constantly at 100% regardless of what is happening.

Tried all the fixes in that link and nothing helps.

Any ideas??

Edit: it's 100% disk usage. When I said cpu usage before, I misspoke.

Sounds like the indexer is working overtime - leave it overnight to finish ^^

If you have a slower hard drive, disabling Windows Search indexer can help. Do this by right-clicking your HDD and unchecking the search index option at the bottom.

Downside is that Windows search will take longer in future (if you use it)

Other than that, check your task manager for items using IOPS.

Honestly I think you just need to give it 24 hours to work itself out. I also had such issues back in the day on a C2Q + Vista system, still don't know what it was, only time healed the problem.

Most of the time if there is mysterious RAM and HDD use Windows is up to something update related.

I think we've done that as well...

Problem is that this has been going on for weeks/months.

But non-stop? Or do you always turn it off again 3 hours later?
It needs uninterrupted time.

What happens if you try to launch a big game?

That said...maybe you're infected with an automated crypto miner. Happens these days.

Finally high HDD use can the sign of a dying drive. Though that doesn't explain the high RAM use.

How much RAM does the PC have and which processes are using it?

If your RAM is full it might start swapping to disk, which would cause very high disk usage as well.

You can check it by viewing your paging deltas.

"Yes, the paging deltas would give you a live indication of how much the server is paging (or "swapping"), but only at that moment. To watch this more closely, and to see a historical view, I would suggest using Performance Monitor (perfmon.exe) to chart or record those deltas (and any other performance counters of interest that may help to correlate specific events or activities with spikes in paging activity)." - How do I tell if my Windows server is swapping?

Thanks. Will give it a shot.

Are they running Office 365 with OneDrive. We had problems when we installed Office 365 and OneDrive that the disk usage would be very high. When closing OneDrive disk usage went back to normal. Happened on a few machines. Upgraded them to SSD and no more problems.

Hey man ive had this happen to me a HUGE amount of times!
Please try this and lemme know if it helps
Start > Search Services > Find SuperFetch > Right Click > Properties > startup type set to Disabled
and then click Stop > OK
Ive had that fix my problem most of the times!

OneDrive is in use and does seem to be causing a lot of usage issues. No other way to back up at this stage though, so can't use any other cloud storage options.

Superfetch is disabled. No change :(

This is not a fault. Windows is only trying to update. The computer might be slow and it takes a while to download/install them. So turn the laptop on with internet connection for 1 or 2 days and it should be fixed

2 DAYS to download an update?? What sorcery is this?

always helps for me.

EDIT: I don't mean exactly two days. If your computer/internet can do it in one night then so be it.

Surely we'd be able to see the update somewhere or that it was trying to download it?

Seriously, what's your RAM size? I've had this issue on 2 seperate pc's one Win7 Pro with 6Gb Ram and one on Win8.1 8Gb RAM, after upgrading both to 16Gb and higher, the problem went byebye. Only other time I had it again was Bit Defender going wonky after license expired, fully removed it and haven't had this issue since.

Crazy. I think it's 4GB. How can you need 16GB for basic word processing things?

Nah 4gb is plenty enough, back everything up and reinstall, kla

12 or 16gb might seem like overkill, and it is most of the time, but it provides important headroom for peak usage scenarios which are more common than you think . You can get by with 8gb on basic stuff but I had reached a stage where my mem usage was 46% on my 8gb laptop with just my work related apps open like Ms office, a browser or 2,the AV and my dev tools. And that’s before I actively start using them. Browsers like Google chrome with just a few tabs open can hog a couple of 100mb Ram easily. Also, keep in mind that the MS OS initially can consume a lot of memory on startup, due to it trying to initialize drivers, services , etc as quickly as possible. An SSD will help with speeding things up but that 4gb RAM will always be a limiting factor as things get more bloated over time.

Mmm, on a side note,I pretty much have less than 40mb on OneDrive and pretty much stopped using it ages ago. If you’re doing backups to it, that can also explaining why it’s taking so much longer too sync.

And Windows is determined to keep 1GB free. If you get anywhere near the 1GB free mark the system will all but freeze up as it tries to figure out how clear some RAM.

My Neighbour’s PC has 4 gigs and he’s sitting on the cusp of its use limit with any additional start up programs causing issues.

I gave him Glasswire (I have a multi user license) and Glary Utils which pushed the usage from 3.5gigs to 4 and made his PC really slow.

I got him an SSD and we will put another 8gigs of RAM in if needs be.

trust me. You don't see it but it is happening in the background.

Start your pc and when it is doing that 100% disc thing usually at startup, go into task manager at processes and scroll down looking at your disc usage and you will find the culprit usually it is superfetch, updates, orchestrator or something and just stop it on the left hand side
That culprit can be stopped in windows services If it is not needed
