Hey all so I recently built a pc for a friend off Carb and now a week later his game has been freezing and making these weird images on the screen.
The graphics card is a 780 lightning edition.
It has happened twice in Fallout 4 and once in unturned. The game freezes and then the driver stops responding.

Please don't tell me the graphics card is dead xD.

cheers

Its not dead dead, but it is on its way..

1. Try underclocking the memory speed and testing
2. try underclocking the core speed and testing
3. try both above mentioned
4. replace on warranty if possible
5. bake/reflow if warranty is not possible (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Xanr4jkmEc)

Obviously better vids exist. personally I've baked a gtx460 and a 8800gtx and both worked out just fine

The issue you are experiencing is probably caused by the memory (a dry solder or something)

Try doing a clean driver install after using DDU. Also check the card temps and see the thermal paste needs to be replaced.

You can also try running the gpu at lower clocks and downclock the memory has a last resort to see if the gpu will be
stable at the lower clocks.

yeah I thought it would be something like that. Any software I should use to underclock it? how much would that effect performance?
How long are we talking here Doc? days, weeks, months?

thanks for the help.

Give your friend your GPU to use for a while and see if the problem persists.

Keep in mind that the problem could only occur when on high memory usage though. So he must stress it in different games at max details.

I technically sold him the GPU so I'm just buying it back from him, Ill just have to take the loss. Cool so its just msi afterburner and DDU. If those don't work I'm gonna bake it.

Try a clean install and maybe even reflash the cards bios first. Undervolting from any source could also cause that.

That Lightning has been reduced to a tiny static shock. Time to buy BatterybOy's 1080

How long ago can a problem like this start? Does it happen suddenly or over a couple months.

How long is a piece of string? It can happen suddenly or start going over the course of many months. It depends on how it's going. That GPU is definitely going though, and it's not going slowly. It's going at a pace, and can happen from anything (like static when installing) or just all on it's own (look up the reasons why baking sometimes work and you'll know why).

PS: Baking is ALWAYS a temporary solution.

Be warned, the oven you bake it in is going to have a really bad smell, you should not use said oven for food for a while...

Edit: I also heard of someone that baked a card the wrong way around, and all the components fell out, I cannot verify the validity of this story ;)

does baking really do anything or is it just a myth?
surely the heat would melt the plastic?

Almost five years on, the 8800 GT I baked is still running.

The temperature isn't anywhere near high enough to melt the plastic.

Who still has a 8800 GT?
this guy ^^ thats who
