I'm really confused and sad at the same time. My beloved fiesta st, with fords news about it having a similar cooling issue as the kuga its market value will tank. Yes I have not had any problems with mine, short distance and long distance holidays it never overheats, but its still part of the problem batch. I only bought it last september, at the time it had +-28 000km, today its sitting on 46 000km and I have truly enjoyed every single km thus far, I have not enjoyed any car as much as this and that includes my old rx8 high power. Yet still I feel like I need to get something else, so ok lets look at a trade in. My budget would be about 300k but I'd like to stay under that.
I want something that can match its performance and also its fuel consumption, 6.2l per 100km while giving it the beans is helluva impressive. The only car I can find similar would be a polo gti, but I dont like polos. I'm sure it will be better in many ways but it just doesnt seem to have the charm of the little fiesta, plus I feel its high risk.
Maybe I can upgrade to a focus st then? 0-100 in 6.5 with consumption over 7l per 100km, while my fiesta 0-100 time is 6.9, honestly thats mostly just an upgrade on size and ride quality, not worth the extra money.
A3 1.8t? My boss drives the sedan, I had a go in it, consumption is better than mine and even though the kw is similar the audi just feels sluggish, and the interior is nothing great, the seats look bland compared to my recaros, entertainment system is nice though.
Clio rs, the dark horse of the bunch. Ticks all the boxes for what I'm looking for in a car, but its french. My assumption is that services and repairs wont come cheap here. The interior also looks tacky and plasticy. Nice seats though, better ride quality than the fez, nice performance, plus I dont mind the switch to automatic.
Then I can spend more than 300k and get a golf gti or a merc a250, I'd lean more towards the merc here, but even though I can afford it I simply do not feel right spending that amount of money on a car. Like I'm the type of person thats always thinking of that rainy day when theres a huge emergency and you need cash.

I honestly cant think of any other cars that would suit me, if I stick to my budget the car also needs to have under 50 000km and have a service plan, under 300k I dont seem to have many options. I bought my fiesta cash, plus purchased an extended service plan, thought I was doing something good and staying debt free, but now I think the longer I keep the car the bigger the loss will be if ford makes another big announcement

Why not keep the car and have the unit fixed like they did on the Kuga? Worst case get a Mazda like Greekking.

That's an option, I planned to upgrade next year, but by then I feel like the market value would have decreased so much that my trade in will be peanuts. So my logic is that I should trade in now while the loss won't be as big

Well worst case I'll give you a fire suit for the ford.

Keep it, and keep it next year, and keep it till the wheels fall off, and then sell it.

You will be throwing money away if you upgrade so often... obviously if you got the car at great bargain this might not be the case.
I know too many people that are in deep dwang because of getting a new car every two years.

What often happens is that they buy a car in like 2014 for 200 000... In 2016 they want a new car.
They still owe 180 000 on the car and when they trade it in they get 150 000 or something.
The new car costs 250 000... the dealer then just finances a total amount of 280 000 (plus all their little costs).

They repeat this cycle a few times and they end up with an ever growing financed amount.

YMMV

He bought the car cash which not alot of people do now.
I have had my car now for 11 years and drove up 456750km so far (can't wait to hit 456789)

Should rather keep the ford after it is fix and keep it like the Toyota.

Indeed a factor that changes things a bit. Cash is king! dash09 keep doing the cash thing... if you want a new car NOW already, no real reason to wait and lose value.

@others... debt is evil! Credit is from the devil!
Please be wise about your purchases on credit, chasing the next big thing because everyone has it is a downward spiral.
You'll get a quick hit of "ooh I love my new [insert item here]" which will last a bit, and then you'll be stuck with the debt.

Please note that I am not 100% debt free myself yet but am working towards it.

I could not agree more, I have watch my friends dig themselves into very big debt pits.

Funny thing is... those friends might actually be earning MORE than you... but they're always "broke". :-(
It sucks because it causes much unneeded stress for them.

Dude the corolla will outlive me I'm sure, that thing wont give up, I'll sell my granny before selling that car. Its just unfortunate that its heavier on petrol than the fiesta, hence its not my daily car. Actually haven't used it in a while, its just parked off, battery probably dead now, but I'll give it a good clean this weekend and use it to work next week

Hey there, Fiesta ST owner here. 2013 with 70500 km. Trade value is approximately R155k.

Looking to extend the warranty to 3 years and pay for annual services out of pocket (cheaper than paying for the extended service plan upfront).
I think people will be paying atleast R125k for this car in 3-4 years time if it is well kept.

(I don't think it's worth selling or trading at this age for this sort of price. Especially considering the reasons you listed above. One way to improve the ride is to change to a softer sidewall tyre with a better compound. You might pay a bit more for the tyre (Michelin PS3's and Hankook V12 evo2 for example), but the improvement is worth it IMO.)

I have a 2013 PGti and I have had 0 issues. Yes its classified as a "high risk", however, I have not had any issues. That said I don't drive through dodgy areas. Not that really matters...

My Golf1 with ABF turbo, that was a risky thing to have. Had a few incidents with it.

Back on track, I agree. Keep the car. I still owe a few bucks on my vehicle and to trade it in and get say, R180k, what else will you get for that money? Absolutely nothing will have the same bang for back as these small turbo hatches. - Nothing

I went and drove the Clio, the box feels really jerky. Its a DQ200 dry clutch setup. The Pgti also uses the DQ200 but Gen2 with 7 Forward Gears which is silky smooth. No idea why the clio was jerky. I could feel every gear change. Suspect the clamping pressure on the clutch packs would be sorted with software.

Anyway, just some info and my opinion.

Gawd, just don't buy a Renualt. It does not keep its value at all, its like a fokken Volvo.
Yes repairs take very long. My Clio went in for whining noise in the gearbox, took them over a month to get the parts and repair it.
It was under warranty but still.

I now owe on a car but unfortunately I was forced to...My fiance's previous car was dying and costing more and more to fix.
I always bought my Bikes cash and was 100% debt free until this last month. Hopefully I can hammer this debt by the end of next year. usually a 6 year thing... doing it under two years will be pretty good in my opinion.

dash09 - which year is your st ? I think its only 2012-2013 models that are part of the recall , had my service yesterday and was told mine is not part of the recall/fix

Also how do you drive on a daily basis to get 6.2l per 100km - Im getting 8,2 xD

Mine is 2013, I don't drive slow but I also don't over rev the car. I change at like 4000rpm. I drive 140-160 but like 95% of my work commute is on the highway, hence I get good consumption

Personally, I'd keep it... the cars are still in demand. If you're really itching to change and this gives you a good reason to, don't overlook that Clio you mentioned. Things have come a long way since the bad days. I'm personally on my 3rd Renault and 2nd RS. Family has been running Renaults for years.

BMW 328i (pre facelift), you could find a decent 2013 model with low mileage below 300k
180kw, 0-100 in 5.9
And I figured since you're in the 30's now, you might want to get something a bit more grown up ;):p

I'm open to a bmw, been considering a 330d in the current shape. With your suggestion though, I'm not sure about the age/price. It would be in the last year of its service plan if it has any. I want something with a minimum of 2 years worth of services left, also with a fair bit of warranty remaining. I wouldn't fork out that amount of cash for a car that age. Would rather get a newer lower spec. It's just peace of mind knowing you're covered for a couple of services and should certain things break I can book the car in and have it replaced under warranty.

Wow, just checked autotrader now - I'm surprised these are still holding around R300k.
My wife drives the 328i, 2012 model with 65,000km on the clock - and I've been checking values over the past 2 years and its been holding around R280-R300k for a while now. So I just assumed these will go for R250k odd now.

Anyway, people will grind your price for that ST now in any event...so get ready for some nasty low balling. Personally, I would keep the ST and have Ford fix the issue, drive it for another 2 years and then when people have forgotten about this nonsense or have moved on to some other drama you would have the opportunity to do a better trade.

Cheers ;)

Go green, go lexus CT200h!

Can also be driven in EV mode, so you can be "hip" and save the trees or whatever lol

I think you'll be hard pressed to 'upgrade in performance' or in general and keep the same economy figures. However I'd look at BMW 320ds, they are quite luxurious, always in demand. Sure the hp figure might be down but the torque and economy figures are quite ridiculous. Chris Harris swears by them, he did 160kmph on the autobahn with cruise control and had an average of 5-6l per 100km (youtube this review to find exact figures). Personally I haven't driven one but I imagine they are like any 3 series. The Rwd might be a plus, not sure of your preference. With your budget id say look at 135/335 with motoplan but then your consumption will go up. Maybe look at Audi A5/A4s they come with the S tronic duel clutch transmissions which are quite fun to play with, a set of decent tyres on the quattros will make for an enjoyable drive in the twisties.
