What games will 120Hz/144Hz really make a difference?

Reason I am asking such a question is that I recently bought a 120Hz monitor and have only really played Apex Legends on it (which is a game where 120Hz should make a difference) but I don't know if I am really benefiting from this 120Hz.

When I still had the 75Hz monitor and put it side by side, I didn't have my GTX 1070 yet to fully test and compare 60Hz/75Hz to 120Hz so I could actually see the difference and now I just run this 120Hz monitor at 120Hz daily. I also use a laptop now and then for day to day stuff which is 60Hz but I honestly haven't paid attention enough or had the 60Hz monitor scream 60Hz at me as if I was now a 120Hz user and immediately notice this lack of frames. So maybe 120Hz is helping me in games but it just doesn't get noticed????

Reccomend some games where I should maybe run them at 60Hz then 120Hz and see the difference. Games I own that could possibly do this is Apex Legends, PUBG, Rainbow Six Siege, Titanfall 2, Destiny 2, etc. But any other recommendations are welcome.

Lets ask this first, are you sure it's running at 120Hz?
Yes, when just using Windows it is set to 120Hz and monitor information states 120Hz

When playing games I try to ensure I achieve 120FPS in those games or just under and the monitor runs at 120Hz as well.

I'll definitely make triple sure later (tonight) that the monitor is running at 120Hz in Apex Legends.

I was just asking because you'd be amazed how many people think it just happens without you having to change settings.

🤦 I'd slap myself and sell the monitor if I made that assumption. I wouldn't deserve 120Hz then.....

But yeah, maybe I need to play some Rainbow six Siege since I played that quite a bit on the older monitor. So maybe it will feel different or more smooth at 120hz?

Run games on 60hz screen with vsync off and then on 120hz screen with vsync off. You will see the difference instantly.

You should be able to see the difference. I went from a 60hz panel to 75hz and the change was immediate for me. Everything is super smooth.

It's an increase in smoothness. It won't feel fantastic at first, it won't seem like much of anything has changed in fact. Stick with it for 1-2 days. Then try to go back. And you'll see.

I was super underwhelmed at first. Switched back to my other monitor a day later because I decided I made a mistake. And suddenly what had once seemed ok had become molasses, it was all slow and thick and goopy.

Please don't tell me you haven't set the refresh rate to 120Hz in-game with VSYNC off? I will personally fly up and slap you if that's the case 😂

CSGO! and on your desktop. Comparing just mouse trails when moving the mouse in a circular motion, you should see double the amount of mouse trails between 60/120hz.

The mouse trails was the very first thing I noticed going to 144hz. Its so smooth its like sticking your dick into a block of butter

Going from 60/75 to 120 should render a massive difference.
Very easy to spot on pubg which is what I mainly play, but would think any other FPS would do this as well (CSGO etc.).
As suggested, check windows/Nvidia settings and in game settings as well.
Change it in game and play around to confirm if everything is on par

Hmmm, should I sayI didn't think of this so you'll fly up or not 🤔

Dude I made super sure I'm running both the monitor and games at 120Hz/120FPS respectively with V-Sync off.

I tried with 60Hz V-Sync off and then 120Hz V-Sync of and it does feel slightly smoother at 120Hz.

Pretty sure that has definitely changed, I'll double check using this method as this is a clear indicator. I just honestly haven't noticed a significant change to games.

Unfortunately the monitor I was using before was sold to find the GPU upgrade, otherwise I would have had 2 x 27" monitors xD.

I'll definitely test with games mentioned, as it will only show really in FPS. Then also concentrate more when looking at the cursor when moving it.

Well,
The mouse trails was the very first thing I noticed going to 144hz. Its so smooth its like sticking your dick into a block of butter
Yup, them mouse trails is actually noticeable now when paying attention to it. With 60Hz there aren't as many as 120Hz, I assume this is correct as now more frames and thus more of the pointer is displayed on screen (exactly double). So this proved 120Hz is in fact making a difference.

Guess I'll take it that it is making a difference in game.

Think of Hz like this. (same for fps)
Take a book and in the bottom corner draw a stick man that is walking.
The more pages you have the smoother you can draw the movement with each page. (compare 3 pages to 60 that you page through all in a second)

The benefit that you get in a shooter game is where you have to lead the shot on the moving target.
If you only have 3 frames you can miss predict where the target will be in the 3rd frame if the speed or direction is changing.
With more frames it is easier for your brain to calculate and predict the movement path correctly.

In fast paced or fast movement games your brain will benefit because the internet speed is faster and you can get more data downloaded in the same time.
Like dial-up vs fiber. More info at a faster pace for your brain to process. :)

Well since the mouse trails yielded a physical result I could literally see, I did select that as best answer. But now I know I am definitely experiencing better smoothness in shooters. Just haven't played CS:GO yet or any other fast paced shooter other than Apex Legends to truly feel the difference.

Thanks again. 120Hz will live on as worth it though.

I remember when I saw games running at 120hz on a friends PC, I was blown away with how smooth it all looked. I eventually got myself a nice 144hz monitor, booted up a game and was wondering WTF is this?? This couldn't be 144hz, looked exactly the same as on my old 60hz monitor  did a quick google, and found that the monitor was running at 60hz by default, so I fixed that and holy moly, 144hz was beautiful!!

It's just easier for some people to notice than others. And speaking of which, I had a friend running his 120hz monitor at 60hz for about 2 years and he never noticed a difference...even after he switched it to 120hz...
