There’s no doubt that discussion about the graphical fidelity of Watch Dogs has overshadowed the quality of the game itself, with many claiming that the open-world hacker looks no where near as good as it did upon unveiling in 2012. To add to the controversy, it turns out that many of the high quality graphical features used during that demonstration are in fact hidden in the game’s PC build. They’ve since been unlocked by a proactive modder.

Which is great in theory, but according to a newly released statement from Ubisoft, there’s nothing cynical about their locking the assets from the vanilla game, and that users should activate them via the mod at their own risk.

“The dev team is completely dedicated to getting the most out of each platform, so the notion that we would actively downgrade quality is contrary to everything we’ve set out to achieve,” a Ubisoft spokesperson wrote on the Watch Dogs website. “We test and optimize our games for each platform on which they’re released, striving for the best possible quality.

“The PC version does indeed contain some old, unused render settings that were deactivated for a variety of reasons, including possible impacts on visual fidelity, stability, performance and overall gameplay quality. Modders are usually creative and passionate players, and while we appreciate their enthusiasm, the mod in question (which uses those old settings) subjectively enhances the game’s visual fidelity in certain situations but also can have various negative impacts. Those could range from performance issues, to difficulty in reading the environment in order to appreciate the gameplay, to potentially making the game less enjoyable or even unstable.”

So that appears to rule out rumours that a forthcoming major patch for Watch Dogs will officially unlock those hidden features. We'll have to wait and see what the official graphical improvements bring.

I love the irony of their statements, seeing as the game has been pretty much had issues with "visual fidelity, stability, performance and overall gameplay quality" from the moment I installed it. Haven't touched it in over two weeks probably.

Was also pretty bleak about that Graphics... E3 looked impressive... but this... is just... (whats the word?) GARBAGE! just like AC4 :/ poor optimization... my 770's hardly get used

Can't really comment till I try the mod out for myself, that said, the images of the mod does make the game look a lot darker which could cause issues when playing night time

Ubisoft Comments on Deactivated Watch Dogs PC Settings

"The PC version does indeed contain some old, unused render settings that were deactivated for a variety of reasons ..."

By Evan CampbellUbisoft has released an official response to the uncovered and deactivated PC settings for Watch Dogs, claiming the graphical enhancements were disabled because they affected performance and the overall gameplay of the open-world title.

The Watch Dogs team provided the statement on the game's forums in response to PC modders unearthing visual enhancements in the game's code earlier this week, which reportedly increased rain density and non-playable character count — among other improvements — in the Ubisoft-developed title. "The dev team is completely dedicated to getting the most out of each platform, so the notion that we would actively downgrade quality is contrary to everything we’ve set out to achieve," the statement reads.

"... The PC version does indeed contain some old, unused render settings that were deactivated for a variety of reasons, including possible impacts on visual fidelity, stability, performance, and overall gameplay quality," the Watch Dogs team said. "Modders are usually creative and passionate players, and while we appreciate their enthusiasm, the mod in question (which uses those old settings) subjectively enhances the game’s visual fidelity in certain situations but also can have various negative impacts. Those could range from performance issues, to difficulty in reading the environment in order to appreciate the gameplay, to potentially making the game less enjoyable or even unstable."

Some of the disabled PC settings for Watch Dogs related to the E3 demos for the game that were shown in 2012 and 2013. But this isn't the first time visuals shown in an E3 demo have been called into question once the game finally releases to the public.

To potentially making the game less enjoyable or even unstable

I disagree there, I bought the game, and on my 2x R9 280x cards the game is not enjoyable and unstable, I can't even play the game right !

I played 10min on pc, and never again, wasted my money ...

I enjoyed it more on my XBOX 360, but it looks like shit .. compared with GTA V on XBOX 360

Re: Watch Dogs "E3 2012" mod can have damaging effect on gameplay, says Ubisoft

I tested the mod and it does really look nice, the bloom is the biggest difference for me, but the DOF is still way to close, its doesn't feel right.

I just wonder with the patch that dropped whether they'll still be able to run the game with these enhancements or whether Ubi completely removed it now.

Re: Watch Dogs "E3 2012" mod can have damaging effect on gameplay, says Ubisoft

I find the game a lot more enjoyable since I installed the mod. I play games due to there eye candy, not the lack of. And even if the game is darker, it doesn't stop me of enjoying the game even more.

Johan Andersson, technical director Frostbite 3 engine.
“Embarrassing to hear devs say their console versions is the same quality as “ultra high” on PC. Then you are _not_ taking advantage of PC!"

There you go bud.

Yip it is and I fear this is the way the whole gaming industry will be within the next 2 years.
I think the whole high end gaming pc thing will come to an end soon, simply because we'll continue to get shitty ports that run crappy no matter what hardware you use.
Publishers and developers are so focused on getting into bed with Sony and Microsoft that they are willing to alienate 30-40% of their gamers with shit like Watch Dogs.

Pc was supposedly the lead platform for Watch Dogs, yet we got this piss poor excuse of a game.
I guess that's why the PS4 got Watch Dogs exclusives...Because PC was the lead platform.
Possibly also the reason why PS4 got patched 1st...Because PC was the lead platform.
Oh and lets not forget how the Patch made no difference on PC yet it cleared up some PS4 issues..Weird hey.

You know PancakesZA, that is why I have not bought the game yet, even though I have a R500 btgames voucher I got as a gift from my better half. I am however willing to try out the game with the mod but I may very well first test the game to see if it is worthwhile. No I do not mean pirate it ( even though the thought may have crossed my mind ), I mean test it at a friends place to see first.

I had so much hope for this game with all the screenshots and video clips shown before and now this.

The unfortunate thing is that consoles are the bigger market which is why pc sometimes falls by the way side.

Funny that they say the mod makes the game darker, standard the game is too dark half the time, Some missions I was just following a blip on the mini map.

Re: Watch Dogs "E3 2012" mod can have damaging effect on gameplay, says Ubisoft

Since the patch, my games stuttering is worse. I'm not very happy about it but can still play.

Re: Watch Dogs "E3 2012" mod can have damaging effect on gameplay, says Ubisoft

Okay.... It seems I need some help... I picked up Watch Dogs today thanks to my wife giving me a gift voucher from BT Games. I'm stuck after installing the game and it wants to download the patch upon startup. But no it states failed to start download, but my internet is working well as I'm posting using my internet. Any advice will help.

Have you maybe checked if uPlay or certain of their services are down?

Or it may be possible to download the patch from another site and run it on your game.

I had this before with a uplay update as well. Would download and run but then fail and try download again the next time. Got around it by downloading the patch from an online source and running it outside of uplay

Possible they decided not to host an ftp repository. A quick google doesn't turn up much. Might be easier to grab files from a mate or just retry the Uplay update
