Ive been VPN less up until now, but have been hearing more and more that VPNs in gerneral are a good thing to employ.
So im kinda in the market for a VPN service. Id just like to get an idea on your opinions... which VPNs are you using etc, speeds , anythign else I should know.

I came across NordVPN which constantly seems to be in at least the top 3 in multiple reviews. And through an affiliate link one of their specials is 3 year subscription for 99$... which seems like a good deal to me?

Hello,

I write blog articles, and this is a topic I covered very recently, please go have a look and I hope this helps.

Leave a comment on my site or drop me a message if you need any help.
Best of luck in getting yourself setup.

Hi. I'm using Express VPN and haven't had any issues with it at all. Top notch if you ask me. Available for all devices.
The 12 month option is around $100 and there's multiple payment options available. Go for it.

Mullvad. 5 EUR/month, prepaid.

About as anonymous as you can get while still getting great features. They have a 3 hour trial if you want to test it out.

Gets routed through Europe though so enjoy spanish Google.

Rent yourself a nice little VPS in a little island somewhere, make your own.

Opera browser has a built-in free VPN and I occasionally use it to watch content in the UK, US, etc. Doesn't work with Netflix though.

Cheers :)

I have NordVPN. I think they pretty good, You can choose where you want to connect. They have servers all over the world, also P2P servers.
I thought they were also cheap aswell. (Although its a once off fee and not a monthly fee. didn't realise that)

Sometimes the connection can be abit slow, but they have about 10 south african servers you can connect to.

I don't use it 24/7, only when Im doing things that need security, like internet banking, crypto trading, etc.

Was with NordVPN for about 2 years. Had some issues in the last part of my two-year sub. Biggest was when connecting to one of their P2P servers I could almost not do any web browsing. So when downloading a torrent I could on the same PC basically not do anything else. They would throttle port 80, 443 etc. Then I will connect to a normal server and they throttle torrents. I have some friends that still use them and it seems like that problem was resolved. I am now using PureVPN and can't complain. Getting full speeds on torrents and normal downloads (20Mb fiber). If connecting to a local server latency is not affected that much. Will go from 4ms to 12ms but it does depend on the amount of traffic that server has at any point in time. Last I tested Hulu worked, not sure about Netflix USA.

I don’t believe you need a VPN for everyday internet use.
Over 90 percent of web sites nowadays make use of SSL certificates to encrypt and secure web access.
Gmail and other mail providers use SSL or other means to encrypt and secure mail transport.

So VPN would only be for specific purposes. As stated above, to anonymise your browsing experience ( hiding what you browsing ), the site names rather than content, as content should already encrypted.
Hiding where you coming from, eg Netflix USA content or similar requirements.
Downloading Torrent or other illegal material anonymously, so that you can not be tracked.
There might be other personal specific requirements, but this should cover the majority.

I use SmartDNSProxy. It's super cheap, been using it for about a year now. It has a DNS function so you can watch US / UK Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and other network sites. Also has a proxy function which is useful for varous reasons, mainly getting around pesty region locks the DNS can't. I've used it to buy Origin games from the US store as it's cheaper than buying on our local store, which makes no sense.

Another provider is Private Internet Access. They get good reviews too amongst others out there. Tunnel Bear is currently one thats left open for discussion after McAfee acquired it earlier this year and the laws of either parties in their respective countries.

Private Internet Access

It's pretty simple if you do plan on making your own, install OpenVPN-server on a little raspberry pi and plug it in at work or something haha. There's also a bunch of freely available OpenVPN servers (I don't recommend these)

I currently use this setup hosting the server on a RPI 3 plugged in somewhere in Cape Town, with a total of 4 users at a time. Honestly just using it for playing games on Steam. in game ping doubled from 15 to 30, it's serving the purpose I need it to so no complaints from me.

So I went with NordVPN...they have a 30 day refund policy, so I'm gonna try it out and see how it goes... So far not noticing any slow down...yet lol... and their spring sale was kinda hard to turn down

Windscribe - gives you a free 10Gb/month trial account (recharges the following month) so for occasional use it is free. I use it when traveling (at the moment) since some countries have access restrictions where I go. I have been using it for ~6 months now when needed, and it works well.

I am considering getting a Pro plan ($49/year, now on promo for 2 accounts). If anyone is interested in getting one account and splitting the cost, PM me.

I think the promo code Reddit50 should give you 50GB on the free account.

Tunnel bear has a 500mb free account.

For paid vpns it varies so much depending where you are and which server you connect to. I recommend making use of the trial periods from different providers. If you want on specifically for geoblocking circumventing Netflix etc then you need to look at the details and read reviews, because not many still work with Netflix.
