Maybe something like this HP G4 should work for your needs :)

Thank you! I'll take a look

Can you put a GPU in SFF PCs like that? Do the PSUs support GPUs?

Gaming on a budget, its perfect. Limited GPU possibilities.

If it requires supplementary power, you need one of those dodgy SATA to PCIe connectors (I recommend that no-one ever use this).

I think since @EbenSwa already has a GPU and is hoping to keep using it, then buying a system with limited GPU support isn't necessarily the best choice. Better to just upgrade CPU and mobo and RAM.

I've browsed through the classifieds for a better deal but R4000 for the i5 10400 combo does seem reasonable. I'll swap out the ram because it is the only downside to the combo.

For many years i have used my 2600 and gtx 1070 in all the latest titles with playable frames. I mostly play escape from tarkov.

As of recently my motherboard died and i am forced to buy new hardware.

As i am still a aircraft maintenance engineer apprentice i can't buy the latest and greatest. I am currently looking at a i5 8400 and gigabyte H310MDS2 2.0 with a psu and ssd for R3499.

Is this a viable upgrade?

On the amd side a good budget level price to performance ratio you are looking at is a 3600 at about R1300-R1500 and a b450 for about R1300-R1700. 16gb of ddr4 3200 ram is around R700. Not sure why you need anything else like a psu if only your board died. Basic second hand ssd I would price at R1-R1.5 per gb, anything more than that you might as well buy new.

Amd 3600 is roughly equivalent/slightly better to a 10400, but the amd has better peripheral support like pcie 4 and faster ddr4 if you find a b550 or x570. You also provide yourself an upgrade path to a 5800x3d if you manage to buy a good mid range mobo with sufficient vrm power.

Sure. I wouldn't even worry too much about the RAM for now, the 10400 is technically only rated for 2666MT/s RAM anyway. I've got my 10400 to run at 3200MT/s but not one MT faster. And I don't think the bump from 2666 to 3200 would be major. But it's up to you.

I'll be happy to just be able to play some games again. And it most definitely will be better than my i7 2600. The ram can be upgraded at a later date. Thank you for all your imputs. I'm glad i did not take the 8400 hahaha
