For many years i have used my 2600 and gtx 1070 in all the latest titles with playable frames. I mostly play escape from tarkov.

As of recently my motherboard died and i am forced to buy new hardware.

As i am still a aircraft maintenance engineer apprentice i can't buy the latest and greatest. I am currently looking at a i5 8400 and gigabyte H310MDS2 2.0 with a psu and ssd for R3499.

Is this a viable upgrade?

Not to comment on the price of that upgrade but do bear in mind you'll need DDR4 RAM as well, the RAM from your old rig is DDR3 and won't fit.

16GB configured as 2x8GB modules is what you should aim for. Speed of the RAM won't matter that much at that level.

Is the price too high? There is 12gb included but I'll put 16gb in directly after buying if i decide to go for it

I'm not up to date on pricing, I recommend if you want to compare pricing, go to the applicable section on this forum and see what components have recently sold for to help determine price.

E.g. for the CPU, go to forums -> classifieds -> CPU -> Intel and then use the filters to look for recent sales of 8400s.

Also worth mentioning what brand, model, and capacity both the SSD and PSU are? There are some very cheap SSDs and PSUs in rotation nowadays which aren't really worth the meagre price they sell for.

I'm not sure on the brands of the ssd or psu but I'm going to take a look at it shortly and confirm that. I'm not really bothered by that because i have a good psu and 3 ssds already

Well from a casual glance at the forum, 8400s have gone for R 750 and B360 motherboards (slightly nicer than an H310) have gone for R 600, so spending a whole bunch of extra money on RAM, a PSU and an SSD that you don't really need seems like a bad idea.

Rather just get a CPU, mobo, and RAM, as that seems to be all you really need.

Found a i5 10400 upgrade kit for R4000. That seems to be worth it?

Again, impossible to judge the value if you don't post the full details. Motherboard make/model, RAM make/model/capacity, etc.

If it's a 10400 with a ROG Maximus motherboard and 64GB DDR4 4000MHz RAM then it's a great deal. If it's a 10400 with a H510 pro-VH and 4GB of 2133MHz RAM then it's not a great deal.

Oh and 512gb nvme

if you really want to upgrade what you need to look for is a 1700 socket i3 with a standard board . Its much fastest then most older gen high end stuff and can keep up with newer gen GPUS .

Look dude... You want to play Tarkov right?
You want to know if the i3 10400 is good for gaming right?

Google dude.... like.... Is not hard to do your own research.

I have googled, and this is part of research... asking the people who know more than me.

Goldfritter is giving you good advice, you will likely get a better deal on here.

Also, the 2666MT RAM I would personally not be happy with (unless the timings match DDR3, which they likely wont).

Fair enough

Well, If all you going to do is play tarkov @ 1080p then yes, The 10400 is going to be more than alright with a 1070.
Get what is cheapest that will do what you want it to do. Play tarkov.

A 10400 for roughly the same price as a 8400 seems like a good deal to me. Currently have no pc so this seems like a good option

Yes the 2666 ram isn't the best but i can always swap it out for faster ram. But currently i have no pc and upgrade kits are expensive. So this does look like a good deal?

Great, with the links in that thread, you have all the information you need to search the specific models in the classifieds and determine if the price is right.

Side note, it seems you forgot from when you read all the rules of the site from top to bottom when you joined, any form of price discussion in the sale thread is not allowed, including asking if the price is negotiable. That is a one-way ticket to getting banned.

Maybe read all the rules again from top to bottom, just in case you forgot another one: Member Rules

Thanks will do, was not aware. Sorry

Not just the RAM. Current CPU + Board match are OK, but I won't trust that board with a 10900K for example.

Maybe check the threads and see if you can rather find the components loose and see if you have trier-above for the same or less.
