The first road legal production car to make 100 BHP/L was the 1986 Ford Sierra Cosworth.

A friend who is an avid car collector owns an original R5 Turbo in his collection in Alberton. Have pics hidden somewhere from 15 odd years ago, will post if I can find them.

Finally dug the photos out of the bowels of my PC - from back in 2011 when I took my son to see the collection.
In the pics you can see two of the full time mechanics he employs, there is a pic of a V12 Ferrari Daytona motor stripped to have a new timing chain installed, some fully restored 1950's Grahams, a shitload of Alfa Romeo's (they have the largest collection of Alfa's in the Southern Hemisphere), a '57 Studebaker partly restored after standing in a shed in the USA for 30 years, an RX7 with a twin-turbo V8 that held the SA land speed record for a number of years until Salvi from Savspeed took the crown - the RX7 was rebuilt to contest it again, but could not do so without lots of aero needing to be added as it kept on trying to take off!
Lots of 1950's Cadillac's, the R5 with 1,527cc turbo motor, a 1950's Alfa Spyder Touring prototype - one of only 5 made apparently, Fiat 500, lots of restored pinball machines, one dating back to 1952 which was originally in his father's shop!
There's also a Shelby 428 Mustang - originally imported by the owners of the Black Steer franchise as a way to market the restaurants, but they removed the 428 & dropped in a 302, at the time we saw it they had just finished restoring it & had dropped the original 428 motor back in.
Then, there's the pièce de résistance: The Mclaren F1, and finally the Evo VIII - which is actually quicker then the Mclaren from 0-100 as it is AWD!

Pics are downsized to 640 x 480 as Imgur was having a fit when I tried to upload the original size images.

You could send these details to SentiMETAL of Cars.co.za - they'd probably do a piece on this collection, as they've done on plenty of others. Let me know if you'd like me to put you in contact with Wilhelm.

Could it make 100HP/l without breaking down? That's the real question.
Depends on what's your definition of a oil leak. Some would call it a breakdown, whereas Ford and most British manufacturers would call it a feature.

It's called a sweat!! All athletes do it.

I wouldn't call producing 500 "production" cars specifically for homologation purposes really a production car.

Now let's move onto something more interesting, 100hp/lt? pppffttt how about 1000Hp/lt from a old rusted production car block, now that's something to get worked up about.

It wasn't only 500.

5545 Sierra Cosworths were made. This is the one my post was about that was the first to 100Bhp/L. Prior to the Pug being mentioned.
13145 Saphire Cosworth 4x2's were made.
12240 Saphire Cosworth 4x4's were made.

500 cars pulled aside from the first production run of 5545 Sierra Cosworth and these ones went to Aston Martin Tickford for the conversions/changes that resulted in the RS500 Cosworth. These ones had a slight increase in power but the changes made to engine were so significant that with minimal mods (basically a chip/remap) they were doing 400Hp easy.

I am referring to most group b carzy cars.

Anyway I think 3lt Essex Ford XR6 with the 2lt coke and 1lt bandy was the more popular one in Sa.

Well that's only cause we never got the Cosworth here. And there is no comparison.

And I owned two Ford Sierra 3.0 with that Essex engine. One was a 3.0GLS and other was the XR6. And I owned them both at same time. Can't mention them in same sentence as the Cossies. It's like putting Cheslin Kolbe up against Eben Etzebeth in a game of touch Rugby. And Eben is the V6.
