A couple of us managed to get into the Beta so I thought it would be good to have a place to discuss it. As well as find out who else might be joining us in the full game later on.

So far I really like it, the handling model is much more pleasing that the first, most of the hard edges that one would come acropper on are gone from the world.
And those street races...damn, I wish the whole game was just that, it's so nice to have jumps and stuff in a street race again, haven't seen that since the original Underground days.
My main concern was I did those 3 that are in the Beta....and that was supposedly 17% of the street racing campaign, so not a lot there it seems. So it seems like if you're only in it for one or two of the disciplines it's not worth it, there's too little game there. But if you enjoy all the clowning around then this should be a pretty good romp.

Still might be a pre-order for me though.

So, what about you guys?

It’s okay from the bit I played. I much prefer NFS Payback

If only Payback had jumps. To be honest though it feels more like Test Drive Unlimited than Payback.

I agree game feels like Test Drive Unlimited only with much better graphics, I enjoyed TDU, but I am not sure if I would buy The Crew 2 on release. I feel it's not worth pre-order price, might be worth it on a steam / uplay special someday.

I agree. If only it had more content because as @Mast3rBlast3r said, 17% already completed in just three disciplines in the beta. It’s a shame really since I loved the first game so much. I expected a lot more from the game

That's not quite what I said. I said 17% in the Discipline itself. Not the total campaign.

I did everything in the campaign besides all the photo ops, although I did a few of those too.

What I meant was each discipline had 3 events and that equalled 17% of that discipline.
That means that each discipline likely has 16-17 events. There are a total 14 disciplines in the game so that's around 238 events which is actually quite respectable. If you feel like including coming back later with a teched up vehicle to do hard mode that figure doubles.
Plus there's likely the usual MMO grind padding. Plus then there's the need to build up credits so you can buy out the whole vehicle list.

The problem comes in if you for instance only like the "pure" racing modes and not all the other silly tooling around. That's 4 disciplines, a total of 68 events, still not too bad. BUT two of those are locked behind other tooling around so you'll have to do a whole bunch of crap you don't want first. So if you don't like the other stuff and you get it you have two disciplines available to you, 34 events, and then you are miserable doing other crap.

In addition after doing all the skills and events in the Beta for the the 4, I dunno, classes maybe, that totaled 6-7% complete of each class (I'm assuming doing all the pics would have gotten this closer to 10%). So there definitely is a lot to do in the game.

Doing everything in the Beta, so 12 events and I think about 28 skills (fast travelling to most), plus racing across the country just to experience it (which seemed even more boring than the first somehow), finding a few Live Crates and doing a few pics took about 4 hours.

So to sum up there is a lot of game here but if you're like me and most of the trailer made you go meh, except for one thing you saw then unfortunately I'm here to tell you there's less of that thing than you hoped.

I mean, a bit unreasonable in a game with 238 events, but I was hoping for 40-50 street races. I was hoping they would be a much bigger chunk than they are.

I had a lot of issues for the first day, got random errors and kept having to redo the intro. There was a lot of the same complaints and looks like it might have been server related, it was fixed later. I then played about 2 - 3 hours. It is nice, not bad at all, but i also really liked the first one and they also kept it alive for quite some time with updated graphics and content.

They also said not everything is included in the beta, so content might be a lot more in final product.

I like the driving model, for an arcade racer it is not bad, wish it had a simulation option to make driving a bit more challenging, but anyway. There is rubber banding and i hate that in racing games. The map is enormous like the last one, it looks really good and jumping from location to location seamlessly is really a feature of the game engine that i like, I don't know how they do it, but the map and world is just brilliant.

That being said, i have a few gripes, or things i wish were different. Test Drive had a great feature where you owned houses and bought cars and parts at dealerships, here you buy cars and parts in menus. I do not like the crap building up followers and doing cool crap to get more followers. I would much rather prefer a story, even if it is not that great, or then just building your own driving empire or something. FH3 nailed the social follower thing, here it seems forced and annoying.

So yeah, not bad, i really liked some parts, the introduction of planes and boats etc, is ok, nothing more... Before the Beta this was a definite buy for me, now not sure, will still get it, but probably on a special. IMO it's not worth the 1k prices that new games are lately.

Yeah those were server side. It's a Ubisoft game, you are GUARANTEED to have server issues on the first day.

By them saying not everything is included in the Beta I assume they meant all the events and skills and disciplines one could see but not access. I doubt there will suddenly be more than one could see but not access. Beyond later DLC expansions of course.

You know what bugged me about the Test Drive part? The voice told you damn this building is so huge and you should have a look around and everything when you first enter your base, but it's fairly small two-room space with enough room for only your 3 favourite (as in quick-switch) vehicles. It's Test Drivey but nowhere near Test Drivey enough. I seriously hope that was just Beta syndrome.

Don't worry about the followers thing. You'll be wracking them up just as easily as FH3, it won't be anywhere near Blur levels where you constantly have to redo races just to get 3-4 extra followers so you can unlock the next event.

I think cops will be the deciding factor like usual. In the first they were absolutely everywhere and I found myself getting chased every 100m. I got Gold for the first but barely played because I was always just in cop chases and then I'd crash on some stupid edge in the world that shouldn't have been there and get caught. In the Beta there weren't any at all...and I severly hope they stay out of the main game bar bait crates like NFS Payback where you choose to initiate chases. If they're there in full force I probably won't get it.

For anyone about to buy a new 1080 GPU it seems this just became the new nVidia promo game.

What i did not like about the follower system is that it seemed pointless. If you flew around and did loops and stunts you would get a few every second, it is not hard to get followers, and that makes it even more pointless. The game seemed very very easy for me, still fun, but without that sense of challenge or higher difficulty early on i don't know if this will do it for me a few hours in anymore.

The problem i have is the follower system seemed exactly the same for each discipline, do something and people will go ape sh*t. At most it will take you 3 tries to perfect it and move on. It's like it was made more accessible, but in doing that they are making it too easy for people who actually play things like this for hours...

But hope i am wrong, i was still impressed, it looks amazing and it was fun, just not a day 1 buy for me.

Not hard in FH3 either though to rack up all the extra stuff one needed. Though the events are harder but that's because it's handling model is a little more sim-like (I would expect the final game to still have tweaks regarding this as well). I expect there to be a fairly sharp difficulty curve/MMO padding after these events we dead. You'll have to clown around a bit more and gear up because the competition will have higher power vehicles in subsequent events.

It doesn't quite deserve to be a day one purchase I admit. But now that the Beta is done I find myself missing it so I took advantage of of the guys on here selling Steam games at 10% less and got myself the Gold. There's nothing else coming up I am going to want and an extra vehicle is always welcome.

At least I should play it more than the first for which I also got Gold for but barely played because the cops drove me up the wall...literally.

@Mast3rBlast3r @LaidtoRest_ZA is this game worth picking up? Greenman Gaming has it on sale for $29 right now. I am currently playing FH4 at the moment though.

Sadly no.
I bought it expecting it to only get better from the Beta....instead it's basically the beta build, just that the cap has been removed on the progression.

So the parts of the game that I really wanted are over in a flash and they haven't expanded on them with DLC and custom events etc. like I was hoping.

And then you get to redo the events on hard once your vehicle is at a much higher power.

I disliked the first Crew game because cops would chase me every other second and unlike NFS there were no pursuit breakers. But this one just feels like a giant lifeless demo.

Wanted so much for this game to be good but i hear you, i guess i will skip it for now

Do you think the pvp coming out in December will make it any better?

Not sure. It could be really good and a realisation of what The Crew 2 promised (crazy fun multi-vehicle type races) BUT for people that actually have good ping, not us SAffers, at least not me. It could also be an uncontrollable mess.
