hello good people.. I have a "little" project idea that I need a bit of help with.

real short version: I'm looking for somebody who can build custom amplifier(s) for my existing speakers... I had friend nearby who could, but then they up and moved to Cape Town.

What I have in the cupboard..

I have the remains of a Philips FWD876 system that I would love to make use of... those speakers are absolutely gorgeous: aluminium cones, good stuff rubbers, crystal clear high frequencies and rich bass, and with all the volume that I myself could ever want.

unfortunately the main control unit died a few years back (caps failed, it started taking longer and longer to turn on, and then it just stopped working).. and then I broke it even further when I opened it to tinker. the speakers are all that remain now, but it had a very interesting configuration.. it was a 5.1 channel system, with 2 channels powered by amps the main control unit, and 4 by amps in the subwoofer box. it came with a 9-pin mini DIN cable to connect the main unit to the sub, the 2 "front" speakers connected directly to the main unit, and 2 "rear" and "center" speakers connected to the back of the sub.

none of the labels give much info regarding power or resistance ratings, so I've been super hesistant to hook the speaker boxes up to anything other than what they were designed to work with. they have been sitting in the cupboard for years. no direct sunlight, nice and dry, all good and safe.

What I'm looking for..

I would like to resurrect this system as "Philipa 2.1", completely skipping the "2.0" release, because she will just be that awesome.. the root of my idea here goes along the lines of connecting the main "front" speakers to the outputs on the back of the sub box, along with some rotary encoders to control volume, bass, trebble, cross-over frequency, etc.

these controls could be integrated into the sub box, or in a separate unit, I don't much mind either way. I feel like it would be better to put everything in the sub box if it the amps that it contains can still be used (service mannual diagrams show an identical part number to the "main" unit amps). alternatively, it would be better to have the controls in a separate box, if it turns out easier to just build a whole new amp from scratch.

is there anybody around the KZN Midlands that would be interested in helping me out with this project?

(bonus) What I currently have running..

my current lounge music setup is something that was given to me: an original Technics SU-V300 amp with it's two Technics SB-LX10 speaker boxes.. the amp has some really funky quirks though, most notably the right channel in both "A" and "B" speaker groups is severely muted, I'd guess around 30-odd percent of the left channel volume?

anyways, I've tested this with switching speakers around and it is definitely inside the amp, and it affects both "A" and "B" speaker outputs, regardless of which is turned on or off. as such, I'm currently running this with a speaker on each "left A" and "right A", and then I just set my music player (Android with headphone jack) to mono output... it works, but it's not quite right.

while it's speakers are nowhere near as crisp and clear as the Philips, they are still pretty damn decent.. so it would be nice to get it running properly again, no other mods or changes are required to this one.

..and for the sake of the forum rules:

Item Wanted: everything..
Packaging Essential: yes..
Desired Age: new..
Location: Merrivale, KZN
Willing to accept a shipped item: no, deliver it in person. with a box of donuts. :p
Ballpark/Budget Amount: R5000-ish? hoping it won't be that much, but any more than that and I would be better off just buying something else..

thank you both.. I'll go exploring that forum shortly. (y)

..but also, I'll keep this thread open here on Carbonite as well, just in case.

I'm grinning like a kid waiting for Christmas over here right now....

following on from a message I posted in the "Trusted Repairer/Tweaker database" thread linked above, I got a contact number for Paul Lintott from Lint Audio. just got off the phone with him now, and we're making plans to meet up and discuss the project further.

going to close this thread off now as I believe I have a solid plan to move forward with.

Philipa will live again! hehe....
