Description of Bad Deal: Card not working as described

Good day @mod,

I received the RX470 from @Chris r DBE on the 23rd of June at 16:28 saying I will test the card and will update accordingly.

Later the evening at 18:37 I installed the card in the computer used DDU and installed drivers with no issues and ran superposition to test the card's performance and temps. I got a score of 140 points with an average of 1 fps. I tried to open the AMD drivers app and got an error that no drivers were installed. The GPU also gave an error code 43 in device manager.

I left the PC for the night because I was helping my friend building his PC. I informed @Chris r DBE that I will try again the next day.

The next day 24 June at 12:16 I informed him with the following message that the card isn't working properly:

"Hey man, so I've struggled a lot to get any display out of the card today. I know the system is booting up because all my icue devices is running their lighting profiles which are loaded by icue.
Sometimes the gpu just ramps up the fan and stays constant full speed without any display. I managed to get it to so my windows screen and bios but there was weird tearing and the screen flickered."

I sent him a video of my 1060 working 100% without any Nvidia drivers and his RX470 running at full fan speed without any display. I asked him if I should repaste the card as the card was old already and he said

"Please try that.. Was it getting hot yesterday when u were doing the benchmark"

I replied

"Will do. I wasn't aware of it being hot, I couldn't get any readings from the sensors. In MSI afterburner as well. It only said the name. Didn't give any clock speeds or anything"

I did a repaste but still didn't get any display with the display ports.

He then asked me the following:

"CN you please try the other display input and see if you can flash it.. Because i think u should have flashed it yesterday" (referring to the previous evening when I had display on the card)

After a while I got a display and told him the following:

"Give me a sec, then I will try the hdmi port. I dont have anything using a dvi port."

"I got display from hdmi 👌🏼. I will try to flash the bios but if it doesn't work it isn't on me"

He then just asked that I don't benchmark the GPU in this state which I didn't do.

I flashed the GPU but then got the same as the full speed fans with no display. He later asked me which bios did I use and I learned that there is specific bios for different brands of ram. I flashed the card with the incorrect bios. I used the Hynix bios instead of the Samsung bios.

The GPU sometimes display and I can go into windows but when I try to open the ATI flash app to flash the card again it just restarts with full fan speed and no display.

The last time I spoke to him was on the 24 of June.

On the 29th of June after the weekend he asked me:

[07:59, 6/29/2020] Chris R DBE (Carb): Morning please rate me
[07:59, 6/29/2020] Chris R DBE (Carb): If u gona say something good
[09:36, 6/29/2020] PsychoErtjie: Morning, I can't leave a rating yet because the card that you sold me did not work yet. It only gave me problems
[09:56, 6/29/2020] Chris R DBE (Carb): U see u'v been quiet in almost a week. Now i helped you to flash the card that u were trying to brick. And this is you thank you.. No problem it is ok thank you mate

There was a lot of back and forth arguing but at the end of the day I said:

[19:18, 6/29/2020] PsychoErtjie: I will try and get the card to someone that knows GPU's well. I will ask him to reflash the card with the correct bios. I will then let you know what's happening 👌🏼 have a great evening further

He didn't reply to my message.

I arranged a courier to pick up my GPU and sent it to @ScuBaLlama, he got a way to flash the card to the correct Samsung Bios but the problem still persists.

My message to @Chris r DBE this morning:

[13:27, 7/7/2020] PsychoErtjie: Good day Chris,

I've sent the GPU to a @ScuBaLlama on Carb. He flashed the card to the correct Samsung bios from gigabyte's website. The card still does the same with the correct bios. The card gives a VGA error on startup and has no display with full fan speed.

Here is a pic of GPU-Z where you can see the Samsung bios is loaded. And a video of what the card is doing on startup

Please be so kind and refund me the full amount for the card as it is not working as you stated in your ad on carbonite.

Regards

He is still arguing that I broke the card when I benchmarked the card to test if it was working and that I bricked the GPU when I flashed it with the wrong brand bios. I would like to return the GPU to him as I am not satisfied with the card and the way he talked to me.

I do have all the WhatsApp chats with him if any mod wants to read it.

In the future, I won't try and fix the card myself.

Thanks for the read, and hope you can help me.

Sorry for all the grammar mistakes. I am Afrikaans...

Just my 2c, having dealt with @PsychoErtjie as recently as Saturday (he purchased a cpu from me), he definitely did not strike me as the type that would break a card only to ask for a refund.

He waited patiently for the cpu he ordered from me even with the delays and was honest and straight forward when I met him. Artifacting and issues were present on the card BEFORE a bios flash was attempted.

Maybe I can add something to this. So the issue that @PsychoErtjie described is the exact same issue I experienced with 2 RX 470's in the past. For whatever reason the card would run at full speed and eventually start to idle but absolutely no display. Whenever it was able to display something it ran for a few minutes and then just went blank. The entire PC, including the card would still be running for whatever reason. It seems like this becoming a common issue with 470 owners.
