G'day Ladz,

Me wife recons she wants to trade in her Stepway for something a little beefier. She puts quite a few km's on it and probably does about 20k+ a year on it with where she works. She's interested in the Captur and I see it used the exact same engine and turbo setup.

Has anyone here driven on or maybe both vehicles that can give me some information regarding either? I personally enjoy the Sandero - Takes some getting used to the 3 Cylinder but once you do then it's quite nice to drive around town. We chose it because it was being assembled locally and my wife wanted a larger car than her i10 for town driving.

Thoughts??

PS: I am of the impression that trading in your car costs you a lot more than selling it privately, either has perks and cons. Any thoughts on that too?

I don't know much about the cars, but selling privately is way better than trading it in for the extra money. Trade-in are a lot safer and quick. If you want the easy route out, and want to dodge the gumtree / olx / facebook market place route, then go for the "weelee.co.za" route. Whatever you do don't take it to webuycars, they will often give you even less than what trade-in would. I have successfully sold a car on weelee, and also on gumtree. I have bought a car on gumtree and also on facebook market place. As long as you're cautious and safe you have nothing to fear.

Renault has surprised me with the build quality of their vehicles and the Stepway and Duster have sold extremely well in SA - that in itself speak for the brand. Bear in mind that although Renault owns Dacia, their build quality is separate and I feel that Dacia builds are great quality (Of which the Stepway was derived).

If you already have a Renault, trade it in at Renault for a new one. There's nothing wrong with their cars (just check the Dacia brand elsewhere as well), but for some reason people in SA see them as worthless second-hand. As a brand they're pretty bland and lame, but they work, and they're totally OK. As an upgrade I would DEFINITELY recommend the Duster 1.5 DCI. Light on fuel, larger than the Sandero and you can easily climb a curb with it, since it has a relatively short wheel base.
