Good day Carbies.

So this PC of mine is not lekker in the head. When I switch it on after loadshedding it gives the POST beep, but the screen stays black. Then I switch it off and on again and it boots normally. It only happens after the power was off. Could it be the cmos battery? It's not a massive issue, but would like to know if something is failing so I can start saving. Lol. I got the PC in 2018, thus leading me to the cmos battery not holding charge? But I'm no expert.

Thanx in advance.

CMOS battery is like 25 bucks for 2 at dischem. It's worth changing to rule out the issue.

As mentioned above, change the CMOS battery. It's cheap.

On my last setup, the CMOS battery only lasted about 4 years before I had to reset BIOS settings every boot.

Oh and when buying, maybe avoid Duracell CR2032 batteries. They have a bitter coating that can annoy some devices.

When you say you hear the POST beep and then you switch it off does it take a while to switch off or switch off immediately? BAsically trying to establish if Windows is loaded but just not visible or if it isn't loading into windows at all.

It switches off quickly. You don't have to hold the power button. So I take it windows has not yet loaded.

Would indicate its not making it through post or at least not firing up the drive with windows installed.

Now that you mention it, the screen did come on a couple of times when it started doing it saying I need to press F1 to set up BIOS. I forgot about that.

This isn't always indicative of a CMOS battery though. Motherboards have surge protection features that will prompt you to enter the BIOS after a surge occurred. Some older boards won't specify a reason either. So you would enter BIOS, check all is well and exit.

A reseat of components never did harm. So remove your Graphics Card and RAM, insert it again. See if the problem subsides. If it's still the same, go from there.

I recently reseated the gpu. I took out a 1060 and reseated a 3060ti. Lol. But have to take it out anyway to get to the cmos battery. I will change it anyway, since it's cheap as suggested and also reseat the ram. It is an older board.

Just for interest's sake, do you have your pc plugged directly into the mains or into an extension cord or UPS? If an extension, does it have surge protection?

I used to live in an ancient house with endless electrical problems that ate 10 extension cords for breakfast and played all kinds of hell with my pc. It caused it not to post, got it stuck in a reboot loop and all sorts of other stress.

If you're experiencing power surges when the electricity comes back on, that could be causing the problem.

It is plugged into an extension. And the extension plugged into a surge protection plug.
