Paying an HSBC account

Hi there
If someone gives me a HSBC hk account which is international and I use the normal eft option to them via my Absa account with their account number will it go through to them or is it possible that a south African using HSBC has the same account number

You can't use the normal EFT function to transfer money internationally. You can use Swift through ABSA to do so. Find the link to the relevant page on ABSA's website here Swift - Send money internationally.

Any idea where would money go if I had to transfer to an HSBC account from my Absa account as it's an eft option however you can't open as HSBC account in sa

I would guess the payment would just be rejected, unless HSBC account numbers are structured similarly to ABSA account numbers, then it would go to the ABSA account holder.

Do you mean that when creating the EFT you can select the bank and branch as "HSBCC Hongkong, for example"? If that's the case then it may be possible. Or else ABSA uses the same list of options for banks and branches for local and international payments and didn't restrict the local payments list to valid local options only (which is unlikely).

So I've checked this out and HSBC account numbers are 12 digits whereas Absa is 10, I've done a 20 rand transfer to the HSBC Hong Kong account number and it went through, curious to see if it reaches my friend within a few days or gets refunded to me, or just gets lost
