Hey carbonitas

As the title suggests, we are in the market for a brand new second hand as we have our first born coming this year, and ye olde 2012 i20 has done her duty well, but she needs to find a young couple and will not take kindly to diapers and being spit up on.

So, like most mindless consumers, we're looking at a crossover even though a sedan is likely cheaper and holds just as much space.

Now, pricing is in the 300-350, maybe 380K range. With a trade in of the i20 and a deposit, it gives us around 200-240K loan.

Now the ranty bits: WTF is up with car prices? I'm watching reviews. cars.co.za and ignition and carmag etc etc, and the prices they show between 2019 and 2022 are basically not even in the same ballpark.

A t-cross released in 2021 is now, as a second hand vehicle, worth more than it sold for brand new. Not sure if this is a blip on the stupid end of the "hurr durr, SA can afford a crossover for 500K, so let's sell it for that!"

So, anyway, ranty bits over.

Just to get it out the way. we're not looking at going haval or cherry since when I have test driven them, their engines appear a lot more thirsty and just not as well rounded. They have nice features, but taken objectively, most times the feature novelty fades, and the engine thirst will nag at me for many years. I know their cost nullifies the extra spend on petrol, but with petrol prices where they are, it will only increase.

The type of driving we do is mostly urban and occasional highway-I work from home, and my wife is a teacher, so the need for a highway cruiser is not really needed, so urban efficiency is something we'll probably score higher on (hence why I Haval and Chery don't quite make the cut here). We also, at a min, want curtain airbags, which excludes the likes of the Suzuki Brezza (which was a contender until seeing no trim has 6 airbags)

So, as a shortlist, we're looking at the VW T-cross, Venue (glide model, as the stupid shits at Hyundai thought making their back seat a bench drop down for fluid or motion was somehow smart for a small family car), Kia Sonet, Suzuki Vitarra (bit bigger, but would be keen to test) and maybe a Toyota Cross. Outliers might be an older Audi Q2 for the right price and milleage.

Having driven the Venue and T-Cross, the T-Cross just feels like a well made car. It just, like, fits well on the road and makes me happy to drive it. The Venue drive is "fine" but the only option is a higher priced Glide model, which goes into T-Cross territory, and then I'd chose the T-Cross still.

So I guess this is an open questions for the carbonite peoples: what crossover car would you get in the 300-380K range and if you did, why did you?

Ford Ecosport?

Did consider it, but the style of the boot opening makes me pause-do not like that swing open style. Might be a niggly thing. Have nothing against the ecoboost, just never considered it as there are other cars in the price range that I'd prefer more. If there was a great deal, might consider it.

How about the Kia Sonnet, Cant go wrong here. Kia Build and Price | Models

You can get a brand new one for that price.

Maybe even a second hand Seltos, I have a Seltos and they are great, My friend have the new sonnet and they are also great.
They seem well priced, but getting a second hand one is a challenge XD

Also, the airbag quantity for 2nd from the top 1L EX Turbo shows as only having 2 airbags? Unless cars.co.za is misinformed? Kia Sonet 1.0T EX Specs

Also, the Sonet back seat bench is like their sister company Hyundai-it folds as a 100%, not a 60/40, which is fucking retarded if you ask me.

Check out the new Honda BR-V. Can get brand new at your budget, is much nicer then the old one and space wise- it dwarfs the competition.

In my opinion- If you are planning on having a 2nd child - anything in the Ford eco sport size (Kia sonnet/seltos ; t cross, etc) would probably be fine for daily but might be a bit small when going on holidays and carting around kids+pets, etc.

Two kids, in this economy?!
Think just the one for now, and then maybe another when the ANC is fucked off out of power.

Also, might be a little too big for our current garage- would not need a car this big as of yet.

KIA India safety is bad. The Seltos is bad - worse than a tiny Suzuki SPresso and the Sonet will be worse since it's even smaller.

R300k - 380k is really hatchback territory (Toyota Starlet, Honda Fit are good options) and Chinese SUV territory in 2023.
Usually I'd recommend keeping ol reliable for a bit longer and saving up for the new Toyota Urban Cruiser (It's Official: Hyryder Coming to SA as New Toyota Urban Cruiser) or Honda WRV (2023 Honda WR-V Revealed) that are coming this year.

But I know that "I want a new car" feeling all too well and you sound like you enjoyed the T-cross so I'd probably go with that. Yes the insurance is a bit more and theres a higher risk owning a VW, but it's a solid car with good dealer support.

We're not buying brand new, we're buying brand new second hand :p So like 2020,2021,2022 etc. So new hatchbacks are not required!
The current Urban Cruiser is basically the Suzuki Vitarra Brezza, so it's no wonder Toyota is axing it as Suzuki offers a much better package overall. If the new one is different, that might peak my interest. But that's only coming later this year, after we would need it!

Thanks for the note on the Honda, will put a pin on that as well!

We are getting a newer car simply because baby on the way and we want something a little more solid and safe, with more space than what we currently have. I'd keep the i20 for 5 more years if I could, but we gonna need something a lil extra.

The new Urban Cruiser will be the Suzuki Grand Vitara rebrand. They share a lot.

The current WRV is trash though so don't even bother with it (old, 1.2 engine).

These are super nice, colleague got the super fancy one. Problem for OP would just be their size, it has far surpassed crossover and it is really an SUV, thank goodness.

Crossovers and those who like them should be lined up and set fire to. Get a SUV or get a Sedan.

Bought my wife the Ecosport a year ago. She was also concerned about the boot door style and now says she prefers it over a coventional boot in the garage. The car feels substantial and the 1L ecoboost motor has plenty of go and is quite economical. FWIW atleast test drive one. We have the titanium spec in automatic.

Does it have to be an SUV/Crossover? I have 2 kids and have a Corolla sedan and it has all the nice stuff my 3 series had (excluding the power), it’s Very reliable, has the safety features you need and a ton of space, service isn’t to pricey and it ain’t Fugly. Based on your budget I’m sure you could pick up the previous model with low kms and probably still under m/plan.

Congrats dude!

We bought a 1st gen Duster a year before our first kid was born. He’s now 5 and his sister is 18months.
We considered a large hatch (Ford Focus, Volvo V40..) and seriously looked at the Ecosport but thank goodness we didn’t go for it. Kids need SPACE. Stick a pram + baby bag in the boot of an Ecosport and you’re done.
The Duster’s boot is crazy big. We recently did a 2 week family holiday with the two kids; the Duster accommodated everything we needed.

Also keep and eye out for ISOFIX points in the back. Surprisingly few cars have them these days and seatbelt-mounted baby seats are a PITA.
The other thing that’s a weirdly big win is being able to control the rear electric windows from the front. It’s a simple thing that many more affordable cars don’t have.

Prices are nuts. I have two kids and honestly think you don’t have to rush and and buy a new car for one baby. I’ve managed alright with an i20 as a rental. Babies need a pram and a nappy bag and maybe a cot if you’re dropping them off for a sleepover with the grandparents. I think you should stick with the i20 and see how it goes.

That being said, the Renault duster treated us well as a rental too, with two kids and luggage.

*disclaimer - I drive a 7 seater Mercedes GL with the kids now

Consider the Renault Duster. That car makes so much sense, I'm blown away that it doesn't sell in far bigger numbers. They're a steal second-hand too. The Diesel engine is bulletproof.

Not sure the Duster has a the airbag safety we want. This is a non negotiable from the wife. Their prices are good, though.

I definitely want to keep the i20, but it is showing its age, and already if we visit family out of town, luggage is a tight fit. If we had to visit with baby seat, camp cot and and and, it will start to feel a little cramped. i20 served us well, but we've had it for 10 years, paid off after 4-it's time she goes out to pasture.

Thanks!

Yeah, we already have the isofix seat we are using, so we definitely going to get one with those. I guess the big issue is that back in 2020, when we decided to have kids, the pandemic shat across the world and we held off buying a car then. We could afford something pretty decent then.

Now that same affordability has been decimated thanks to the ANC fucks.

When we get a car, we would want to keep it for a few years. We've not in the habit of changing cars frequently (10 years- i20 :D ), so the next car we will want to keep for a while, so we want something bigger than what we currently have, but not a 7 seater :p

I have always liked Sedan's over crossovers, but there just aren't any really available? Like, besides Toyota Corolla and the expensive german cars, which other Sedan would be in the mix? They have more if not the same boot space as a crossover, but my wife does like the feeling of being in a taller car.

Your research is correct - KIa do have less airbags on the lower models (for some reason).

Maybe consider the loan deals VW offers on the T-Cross? I went that route and really happy with the choice. You can add additional extras, it just adds onto your premium. I opted for the better radio which has android auto/apple car play.

Polo Sedan perhaps? New Polo Sedan | Volkswagen South Africa
Disclaimer: I know nothing about the car; specifications and trunk capacity, etc.
I just happened to see it existed on Ignition this weekend and though I'd mention it since you asked and already seem to consider a VW.

Covid. World wide supply and shipping became a big problem. The price of steel also jumped big time. Container prices became ridiculous. This saw a massive jump in new car prices while they battled to meet demand. Due to this the used car market boomed and stupid money was being paid for used cars. Its starting to calm down a bit now though, but dont expect a drop in new car prices anytime soon.

Well spotted! A lot of persons overlook this when buying Haval, Cherry, etc. We did a calculation here the other day and learnt that you can save around R30 000 a year on fuel when buying a higher end car vs a cheaper Cherry etc. Depends how much driving you do too be honest, but this was based on a person who does a lot of driving. And this was on a Cherry that was only R 50,000.00 less than the Hyundai we compared it to. Not knocking Cherry, but well spotted!

(which was a contender until seeing no trim has 6 airbags)

I do sell Hyundai so I need to try avoid being biased here, but the Venue has a much longer warranty. A 2020 Venue will still have a warranty in place till 2027. You can also expect a lower insurance premium because it is not a VW.
6 Airbags I agree are a must for rear child seats, family etc and I bought with that in mind too when I bought my own car. The Hyundai Venue has this available from the Fluid spec and up.

May I throw in a dark horse here? They dont hold value very well, but an Opel Crossland will give you all the safety features you are looking for at a price that is very hard to beat. Many dealers have these as demos / good clean used. Look at an Enjoy or Edition 1.2T auto.

Another point to consider here, you mention a crossover / Suv cause family growing. Why not an Sedan? Sedans are a dying breed in our country. But in my opinion they are very hard to beat as a proper family car! The boot space they offer cannot be found in a any Crossover. Look at Jetta, Ballade, Elantra,

Another SUV in your price range, and highly recommended, is Honda CRV.

One word: insurance.

They see you having one of those, they rip you a new one.

I'm not really looking at those T&C lease to own things. I've had a look, and there is a laundry list of things you cannot do on a VW Easy Finance deal- Anything over 40 000K after 4 years and you pay. If there is abnormal wear, you pay. Feels more restrictive that I'd want. Maybe I need to interrogate more, but my first gut feel of it was "stay far away from this"

Sounds like you should be buying a second-hand Volvo XC60 with your high safety equipment requirement.

My BIL has it, very nice, but a bit big for us. Was looking at XC40's but their prices are in ANC cadrenomic territory

6 airbags including curtains for the kids, even going back to our 2014 model.

It is nice, and I would prefer a Sedan over a Cross-over, but the interior of this one would need me to dig deep :D

I've got no brand loyalty or anything to VW, and going just off the drive of the t-cross: it just felt like a nicer car to drive compared to other's tested (Venue, Tigo 4 Pro, Jolion,Brezza etc)

Yeah, this makes some sense. Guess it's kind of like GPU prices: it's the one thing that will keep going up.

As for fuel consumption. We are not big drivers, I work from home, wife works about 40KM/day round trip. SO call it about 10-15K KM per year. So we're not going to feel an immediate saving compared to going for a hungrier Chery or Haval, but as I said, we will keep a car for as long as it makes sense (we don't upgrade because we can etc) So after 8-10 years, the savings in fuel will have added up.

I've had a peak at the crossland. When I viewed it on the road, I did not find it appealing to me, but considering the price and features, it *may* have some appeal. I think a testdrive is in order, thank you!

Also, I would love a Sedan, but there just does not appear to be brand new second hand ones around any more besides the Corolla. Also, the wifey factor: she likes the drive being higher up compared to a Sedan.

Maybe a test drive is needed in a Sedan to help convince her

Sure, I can buy a 2017 Passat, but then it's a 6 year old car.

I know this might be strange, but why not buy one of the BEST selling cars ever?

Reliable, light on fuel, holds resale value well, drives like an ocean wave, spacious.

Toyota Corolla. Here's one.

Seems weird that they'd run 6 airbags for 8 years and then drop to two for 2023. In my experience those website specs can be misleading; ie it's saying "Yes I have two front airbags" but it's not saying that's all it has.

If that's the only thing putting you off then I'd speak to a human and confirm.

And have random people open the car door, get in whenever you're in a public lot and ask "Are you my Uber"?
