Hi,

So originally I cloned a 500gig HDD to a Samsung 1TB SSD with the packaged Samsung Data Migration. Now I need to do the reverse (SSD to HDD) because I want to wipe the SSD and clone it with a HDD in my laptop and then stick it in there.

Unfortunately the Samsung software can only do SSD to HDD and not the reverse, so can anyone recommend a program to use (freeware if possible as this will likely be a once off)?

Or suggestions on other possibilities?

Best free backup software for Windows 10/8.1/8/7/vista - EaseUS Todo Backup Free

This one was recommended to me here. I have used it a few times now (SSD --> HDD & HDD --> SSD) and very happy with it.

+1 for EaseUS.

The reason why it's the best is because unless you buy the paid version of Macrium, you cannot resize partitions. Todo Backup Free has this feature in the free version and allows you to restore images from larger disks to smaller disks and visa versa. The best way is to use the Backup Disk feature (not clone), create a backup image, and then restore that image to the destination disk. You can then edit the partition sizes and order in the last dialogue by clicking "edit" next to the destination drive. I have used it previously where it did it automatically, too, but that might have been with the rescue USB.

Cheers :)

Oh, just make sure you set your destination disk to the correct partition scheme, i.e., MBR or GPT otherwise the restore is likely not to work. I use Minitool Partition Wizard for this.

Cheers :)

Please answer a noobish question but how successful is this process when cloning the HDD which contains the OS?
When we cloned our standard 7200rpm SATA drives to Intel SSD's we had some issues. End result we had to do a
complete reinstall from scratch.

I've done it many times without issues - HDD to SSD , SSD to HDD, complete clone , re-install and boot BAM !

Had a thread asking the same question ages ago when I moved to an SSD.
Some of the suggested programs were EaseUS and Macrium Reflect, in the end however I used Samsung's migration tool since I had a Samsung SSD.

Partition assistant to sort out your partitions if needed, EaseUs to clone, Bobs your uncle

Minitool works well.

Macrium will do hot-clone from the running OS to the 2nd disk.

EaseUS isn't allowing me to either Disk Clone or System Clone from a 1TB SSD to a 500GB HDD (even though there's only 300GB of data on the SSD)...

Will try Macrium now.

That doesn’t seem right. What do you mean by “won’t allow”?

Make sure the partition created on the new drive (mbr/gpt) matches the old drive

Shrink the 1tb partition down to less than or same size as new drive. They dont automatically shrink partitions

Probably just my noobness, but it gave me a 4 point error message why I couldn't System Clone. Can't remember what it said when using Disk Clone...

Did you try the "Backup" feature? I always use that one. It creates a system image file, which is way more flexible to restore than cloning.

Cheers :)

But then you need extra space to store the image and you have to wait for 2 seperate read/writes =/

I still say use MiniTool - Partition Wizard, I used all of the ones mentioned in this thread and found it the easiest to use/get right first time.

Is nie. We use the free version of Macrium at work and we often clone 1TB partitions with small amounts of actual data to 250GB SSDs. Maybe the changed the software at some point to include this. Either way I'm interested in EaseUS now since so many people give it the thumbs up :D
