Ya that to, you will need a 370 or similar.

lol just keep an eye on the mobo section. or even the combo's
I have no idea why I never even bothered to look at an i5...

Soooo, for the first time I think I am actually running a worthwhile overclock...

I removed the noisy af fans from the h80i, and replaced them with other corsair case fans I had which are a lot quieter. Replaced the tim between the CPU and cooler. On stock speeds idling is around 32 degrees, full load (blend test prime95) is around 70 degrees.

I then applied a 45 multiplier and enabled my XMP profile. (2400mhz).

Idling temps are around 35 degrees, full load (blend test prime95) is around 75 degrees.

This seems much more along the lines of what I would expect.

Now to play some games and see if I still feel so strongly about an upgrade.... Oh, and maybe a new cooler. :3

thank god. i was hoping you wouldnt fall for "upgrading" sideways. 75 in prime is quite decent, check a cpu heavy game like Farcry 5/GTA5 if you have it. Cant think of other cpu heavy games right now ;p OCCT is also a good tester, bit more realistic in terms of usage than prime95 would be which just tries to push your cpu over the proverbial edge.

A sweet spot i5 8600k with an asus z370F strix. Easy

Unless you want to stick with more threads on an i7 for work purposes
Unless you go with another sweet spot in the form of Ryzen. You'd get more for your 6K.

Yeah that temps look far more decent indeed, best cpu intense game I've come across is bf1 and nfs payback, that will chow 8 threads chop chop, but if prime95 can only get 75 out of it, no game will.

Will I be able to push a bit more without fiddling with voltages?

Maybe 4.7 ish? Going to fiddle more tonight and do some reading on voltages.

When I had my 4790k i found 4.5-4.6 to be some of the most stable/consistent for improvement. Anything above was flinchy.. That being said. I was only rocking a 1070 and ddr3 1600. So your experience may be different.

I have actually been doing some research lately on Ryzen and possibly going to change over. Their specs are pretty impressive

I've been such an intel guy though... Every PC and Mac I have ever owned has been powered by Intel... Changing over is a big step for me.

I remember peeling the sticker on the first ever computer my dad bought me, intel inside. I was so proud of that. (Even though I complete botched it and stuck it on skew...)

I’ve just upgraded from a 4670k system which I’ve sold for just under 4k. With the help of some carb specials, I managed to put together a quite impressive R5 2600 system for just over 5k.

Would've been nice to see a comparison, if you had a 4790k.

None of the benches and fps graphs show that an upgrade from a 4790k at 1440p is worthwhile at the moment. WORST case is 20%, average is around 10% improvement in fps...:/

Sure, a 10% improvement doesn’t look that good. I did it more for “future proofing”. I mean 4th gen is getting long in the tooth now, it sure does still pack a punch when overclocked.

Definitely worth having newer generation hardware and tech, just not worth it for me at the moment. Was strongly considering the i5, and I have an offer out or two, but with the oC I am over 120hz on everything I play so I won't gain much either way...

Really looking forward to see what exactly Ryzen comes out with.

The difference will get smaller and smaller as you increase resolution, as your CPU is no longer the bottleneck.

When it comes to thermal paste, Conductonaut for delidding and Hydronaut between the CPU and cooler. Conductonaut is very risky as it can eat into the metals and is conductive. Don’t bother with Kryonaut, as it offers almost identical performance to Hydronaut while being ten times more of a mission to spread and costing a bit more.

Given the age of your system I’d be more inclined to spend time rather than money on getting the most out of it.

So I bought some new fans! Hopefully she will be more quiet now. :D Still unable to source the splitters locally in Pretoria.
