Hi all
So I’m getting a new laptop soon (it’s in Johannesburg and I’m moving there soon so it’s staying put for the mean time) but I’ve already started to think “how can I upgrade it?”.
Obviously, it only has a single 2666mhz 8 gig RAM module and it’ll run much faster with dual channel enabled so that’s going to be the first thing I add to the upgrade box.
I’m sure it comes with a cheap NVMe drive so that would be upgraded in the future but that’s not a huge stress as it also has a 1tb regular drive included. Pretty neat for storing PUBG and Fortnight game files.
It also comes with a 1060 6gig card that appears to be an MXM card and that got me wondering, if in a few years time, could I put in a 2060 or 1660ti if those cards could be found on eBay?
I’m sure that there are a ton of people on this forum with laptops that run the 960M and 950M cards and I think they can be replaced too.
You’d need to get hold of a card with the same TDP and mod the cooling in the laptop, or you’re gonna have a bad time. I think the 980M would be out of reach but a 1060 would be ok.
If you have a laptop with a 980M, the TDP of that card is immense and there’s not much you couldn’t install. You’d just need decent cooling.
I’ll try get a list of cards with their wattage draw and post them here for reference.
