Hi all

So I’m getting a new laptop soon (it’s in Johannesburg and I’m moving there soon so it’s staying put for the mean time) but I’ve already started to think “how can I upgrade it?”.

Obviously, it only has a single 2666mhz 8 gig RAM module and it’ll run much faster with dual channel enabled so that’s going to be the first thing I add to the upgrade box.

I’m sure it comes with a cheap NVMe drive so that would be upgraded in the future but that’s not a huge stress as it also has a 1tb regular drive included. Pretty neat for storing PUBG and Fortnight game files.

It also comes with a 1060 6gig card that appears to be an MXM card and that got me wondering, if in a few years time, could I put in a 2060 or 1660ti if those cards could be found on eBay?

I’m sure that there are a ton of people on this forum with laptops that run the 960M and 950M cards and I think they can be replaced too.

You’d need to get hold of a card with the same TDP and mod the cooling in the laptop, or you’re gonna have a bad time. I think the 980M would be out of reach but a 1060 would be ok.

If you have a laptop with a 980M, the TDP of that card is immense and there’s not much you couldn’t install. You’d just need decent cooling.

I’ll try get a list of cards with their wattage draw and post them here for reference.

Been there done that. Its cheaper to sell the thing and buy a new laptop unfortunately..

That sucks but also make sense. I suppose anyone selling the card by itself would charge a premium.

Pity.

yes 2nd hand they quite costly and then you already buying a dated card.

Plus they not interchangeable, you will need one for that specific model machines (hens teeth)

external docking bay is the only real viable option for laptop GFX upgrades

I looked at the price of a 2060, it was the cost of a laptop.

I’m waiting for the next gen of external card chassis’s, when the price is waaaaay down and USB4 is common place.

You mean by when they'll cost double the current ones just due to exchange rate?

They will never cost double, obviously. An increase from R14.00 to the dollar to R16.00 is a 14.3% increase.
The external card bays are expensive because they are new to the market but they will halve in price as it becomes more mainstream.

They've been around for 3 or 4 years? How much more time is needed?

Also tell that the to the RTX2080Ti. New generation, more than double the cost of the previous Ti.

*relativity new. In the same way that M.2 has been around for ages yet SSD prices in the M.2 form factor were more expensive than the 2.5" versions up untill recently, and laptops have only just started to make it the defacto standard. R10 000 for an AMD 580 in an external box? No fucking thank you. Very few laptops have Thunderbolt and that's only being standardised by USB4 at the end of 2020.

Lots of current or "popular" tech is still making its way to the average consumer, like external chassis for cards. Maybe the USA is way ahead of South Africa in this case but still.

My main gripe is outdated tech that still plagues our shelves. Screens with a resolution of 1366 X 768 calling themselves "HD", is the same as a CD being "current".

I'm with ya on that last bit.

Hahaha. That may well be possible.

I only consider paying money for an item when it’s on sale.

I see a sale price as the actual price I should pay and anything more, is just racketeering or a monopoly.

I suffered through Cape Town last week because it was 4 degrees and the jacket I wanted wasn’t on sale.

I am a cheap bastard.

Just remember the Afrikaans saying though

"Goedkoop is duurkoop"

One of those days you're gonna delay buying something and the "fallout" is gonna be even pricier.

Just remember, the English have a saying:

“Look at this really nice Rip Curl jacket I got on Saturday. And it was 50% off”.

Hahaha

I got to try out a replica laptop of my new laptop today at Incredible connection since I won’t get mine till August (it’s stuck in Johannesburg for now).

I couldn’t put it through stress testing but the screen, although a basic IPS panel, is still a fuck ton better than the usual shit panels on laptops.

Its missing some key I/O ports like Thunderbolt 3 but I can live without that, the key thing is is the 6 core i7 and NVMe drive. They make it blisteringly fast.

HDMi 2.0 and Blueteeth 5.0 are excellent touches.
