So, short story, I want to purchase a particular CBR400RR NC23 for sub R10k, but the seller doesn't have the papers.

The seller is not the original owner sadly, so no luck of them just getting the registration that easily. After messaging back and forth, the guy seems upstanding and the bike not stolen, just the typical project bike with a negligent paper trail.
Already know I would need to have to complete and submit the DCT and/or DRC forms to hopefully get the bike licensed again. Drive link with the two forms I know of.

Any more experienced carbies willing to share some tips or provide any info I haven't thought of? (besides the "don't buy without papers" comments).

Maybe you'll have better luck than I did but I struggled endlessly trying to get the papers for a FZR400 3TJ I used to own and in the end sold it to someone for spares.
I got as far as tracking down the original RSA owner but there was this guy in the middle and the last registered owner that just couldn't give a rat's ass and there was seemingly nothing I could do.

The seller may SEEM to be upstanding. That has zero reference to the previous seller/s actual owner of the bike.

There is no such thing as "project bike with negligent paper trail".

Let the seller go through the process of having the bike go through police clearance & have it re-registered. Before you buy it. Who knows how many years of outstanding license fees & penalties are owed? Could end up costing you more than what you pay for the actual bike.......

Best case scenario it gets scrapped. After all outstanding fees are paid.....

Otherwise you may well find yourself in for a headache & heartache & loss of money.

I don’t think that you can legally buy a vehicle without the registration papers.

It may be in your possession, but you will not own it.

You could end up with something that was stolen/ involved in a crime / with outstanding fees / outstanding fines, etc etc and it generally doesn’t end well.

Try Samar

dont know if this will help , but had a issue with a bike I sold, got it without papers and the guy tried to finance it but could not do it.

So I arranged with Puzey in jhb to do it with samar, to print a new registration form (samar doc)

I will look into this, as this seems worth a shot as well.

Time to see if the seller would go through with de-registering the bike before the sale. Hopefully they agree, otherwise the hunt for the dream daily will continue.

That is the one truth I am aware of, and the sole thing keeping me from just going through with the transaction. I don't want to waste the money only to have the bike be confiscated later due to some a-hole having second thoughts
