Starting Date: Somewhere in Feb or March
Location: Head Office in Montague Gardens, Cape Town but Work offshore on an diamond mining vessel
Job Description/Requirements: Manage all things IT on board one of 3 of our vessels. From VSAT Internet to Cisco Switches and Mikrotik Routers.
Also deal with Crew members on daily basis to assist where possible.
Fix computers that break, software updates on Office PC's repair printers and so forth.
Required Qualifications include but not limited to the following:
CCNA
A+
N+
CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) Would be an advantage
or some Diploma that has these in the curriculum
Desired Experience include but not limited to the following.
Networking
Mikrotik
Sonicwall
Cisco
CCTV
Access Control
Fiber Optic Splicing (Would be bonus)
PLC Programming (Would be bonus)
Day to Day Activities include running some macros to process trending data from the mining/plant side.
Assist crew members with their problems on cellphones or laptops.
Monitor the network, Fix or Focus any Cameras in the CCTV Network, Pulling of new Cables for CCTV or Access Control Network or Vessel Network.
Drink lots of Coffee (or tea)
Monitor Data Usage per User via Sonicwall.
Sometimes assist one of the other vessels remotely.
Keep track of IT Stock on-board the vessel

So there are a few pro's and cons i can verify as i have been working for the company for 3 years now.
Pros:
You have the opportunity to claim back all of your income tax for the tax year, Providing you do the required days offshore (183 total of which 62 needs to be consecutive)
Whilst on board the vessel, you have no extra living costs, food, gym, entertainment, library is all provided and WiFi off course.
Get to see new and interesting things in the offshore world.
Meet new people and form part of a new Family.
Cons
Spends 2/3 of the year away from Family and Friends.
12 Hour Shifts, 7 days a week, 8 weeks in a row.
Sometimes, just sometimes get woken up in the middle of the night for IT Issues (Happens very rarely)
I Have been doing this for a little more than 3 years now and i really enjoy it.
Not Busy for the Full 12 Hour Shifts so will always have some time to your self.
