So I am getting a large NAS very soon which I will configure as a RAID6 volume, file system going to be either Btrfs or ZFS (depending on what my recommendations are from @zakk or anyone else here)
I ditched all my HDDs in my own system in favor of this NAS. That means I will have 8 free SATA ports on my motherboard for old school SATA SSDs
Now - before I go out looking for an SSD - is it even worth it to use for caching?
I will put EVERYTHING on the NAS and some stuff I access 24/7 like documents, PDFs, some games that don't fit on the OS NVMe and whatever else
In my use case, is it still worth it?
Secondly, not sure whether I should create a separate thread for this, but between ZFS and Btrfs, which is better?
I will be using Linux and Windows from time to time, and I would like the NAS/storage to function exactly the same as it does on Linux, when I decide to boot up the Windows 10
1 thing that immediately I can think of would be file names
Would the file system ZFS/Btrfs allow for me to use the forbidden characters on Windows? Or is there any way to circumvent this? I would prefer native support but if not, I'll use a workaround (like another file manager - just before I ditched Windows I used a very powerful file manager that used to allow ":" in file names, I just forgot what it is called)
Okay and the only other point would be SSD caching ability, I think both ZFS and Btrfs has it supported, but just want some proof from someone here who has tried
Otherwise I think Btrfs and ZFS are quite similar
Would really appreciate any help, or links to DIY setups of caching which would clarify my above questions
Thanks!
