Greetings citizens,

Just recently bought an iPhone 15 pro max in Japan and brought it to SA. Long story short, seems to be getting warmer than I would expect when performing regular tasks. I know not many people will do this but I measured the temp on the back with a IR temperature gun or whatever it’s called, and it read 40 degrees Celsius while downloading an app, playing a song and sending some texts. Nothing crazy. But it’s getting really warm in my hands. Doesn’t seem right.

Was just wondering if anyone can by any chance give an opinion on whether this is normal or do I have to go through the trouble of this in to an iStore… would be really problematic because I don’t have another phone to use while they look at it for a day to tell me it’s working fine. I don’t know what they would even do to test whether it’s getting too hot and what they’d do if they would. Would it be eligible for replacement? Difficult questions I know but maybe someone has an idea. I did contact them and they said to bring it in but I was wondering if I was just expecting it to run cooler than is reasonable.

It’s on the latest update as well.

Not sure how it works on iPhone, but do you have any network issues (considering its from japan)

If your network constantly searches for connection, it could cause it to get hotter quicker and reduce battery life

I considered that too, but it seems to connect perfectly well on MTN. And this kind of heat occurs even when mobile data is off and I’m using WiFi. Just not sure if it’s actually too hot or it’s normal. I expect not. Not sure how they would be able to help if its not

It’s a known issue - update to the latest version of iOS (I run the beta version of iOS 17 as it’s usually quite reliable and patches the various bugs of iOS 17)

You can disable some features (you should always disable 5G for battery life and heat) to reduce the heat produced but it’s just a byproduct of the new processor and dumping heat into the chassis for cooling.

Try enabled battery saver mode - that should reduce the CPU frequency by a bit and the processor on the pro and pro max (Pro Max is a stupid name) is so fast that you’ll never really need to run it at full speed in the first place.

Thanks for the response!

I’m on the latest iOS version, from what I’ve read they solved the heat issue in a prior update so not sure why it’s still happening.

But again not even sure if I’m just being unreasonable with how cool I expect the phone to run during every day tasks. A very subjective question: does yours run really warm even during regular tasks or does it feel cool in your hands? Mine seems to get really warm and sometimes even hot when just doing something like watching Netflix. Last night was watching Netflix and noticed it was hot, measured at 43 degrees. I’m not sure that’s normal.. or maybe I’m just obsessive. But when the device gets so warm that you notice it being too warm in your hands it must mean something. Would love to just normal whether it’s the normal operating temp for the pro max. But ya it’s difficult to assess.

Was it much cheaper to buy in Japan vs South Africa? just curious

If this helps you at all, when I run games on my S22 it often hits 43C on the internal temp sensor.

Interesting, can’t be all that abnormal for phones then. How about in regular use, if you know? I’ve not measured when playing a game. But ya don’t think I can access any internal heat sensors on the iPhone, so not sure how that compares to using a digital thermometer. I imagine if it measures 43 on the chassis, it’s probably even hotter internally. I wouldn’t be bothered if it got a little hot while gaming, just didn’t expect too much heat with regular tasks

Oh right, sure, if you’re absolutely smashing the CPU then I’m not hugely surprised at the increased temperature.

I’ve definitely noticed that my 13 pro gets very warm at times when I have a lot happening all at once.

I do know that the 15 pro max ultra elite v2 has a stupidly fast processor in it and it does need to dump the heat somewhere.

See if the temp drops in the next few version of iOS as they tweak it.

@marky

Want to do some diagnostics with me? We can run some tests on our devices and compare mine to yours.

Some models were made in India, some made in China. Not saying there's any difference, but would be a good A/B test to know for sure.

If you're keen, we can run a call on Discord and test. I have both an IR temperature gun and if you have a macOS device, you can also pull temp data from the phone itself (battery in particular).

Let me know, I have the 15 Pro Max Natural Titanium

That would be incredible man, thanks!! Would really put my mind at ease if I can confirm that the temps are normal. And if not I know I need to take it in.
I’ll have access to a MacBook early March, so unfortunately won’t be able to see any specifics for now. But ya maybe with the IR guns we can get an idea. Though mine is a cheapie off Takealot, not sure how accurate it is 😅 shouldn’t be terribly off though, I guess. Will DM you

Yeah let's run it. Responded to your DM.

You can trade in for s24ultra, problem solved :p

Updated to the latest beta yesterday, so far it seems that temps are much more in line with what I’d expect when performing everyday tasks. Not getting hot just watching Netflix etc. Will update if anything changes for anyone that gives a rat’s arse 😄

my iPhone 13 Pro was running very hot yesterday and ran out of a full battery in a matter of 2 hours.

I put it in battery saver mode which sort of helped and then rebooted and it’s fine now.

I’m running iOS 17.4 beta so it will be more buggy.

Probably a run away process causing the issue.

More curious than anything else, are you all rocking these phones without covers? I haven’t noticed any heating issues at all with mine thankfully but wondering if it’s because the cover stops me from feeling it 😅

I have an Apple original leather cover.

I will be moving to a folio cover that wraps around both the back and the screen as I dropped my iPhone and it now needs a new screen at ~R6600
