Import duties via fedex

Good day guys
Not sure if this is the right place to post this
Has anyone imported items from china that have been sent via FedEx? If so when the items reach south Africa will they contact you to tell you the import duty/customs charges or do you have to phone and find out yourself

They usually tell you but I've also had it once that they do the entire delivery process and upon handover you have to pay the duties which is a little shit. Best bet is to try get hold of them to be sure, worst case you lose a little of your time getting confirmation
