Good day moderators.
I hope you are well.
I wanted to enquire, at what point is one considered a reseller?

I have been thinking for a while now that I should start buying and reselling cheap components on carb or other platforms, but I am worried that the reseller sub would basically eat the profit of the first few items I resold as the margins would be small and if I decided not to continue, it wouldn't be worth it. I was thinking of doing it to make a little extra money on the side, but paying the 40 dollars a month will probably negate any profit I made, if say I only did 1 or 2 deals.

If I buy and resell a few components to try out this venture, would I have to pay for the reseller sub from the first item I resold. Or is there a grace period of a few deals with reselling 2nd hand items before I have to pay for a reseller sub?

Also, where can I find the reseller sub rules, struggling to locate them.

Thank you so much

Let's go through the rules:

A normal or VIP member will need to purchase a Classifieds Reseller subscription under the following circumstances, or if a member of staff decides you need one:
  • If more than one new item is advertised at a time. (Sounds like you won't be selling new, so N/A)
  • If more than one new item is advertised within a six month period. (Sounds like you won't be selling new, so N/A)
  • If we detect a pattern of buying with the intention of reselling to turn a profit. (BINGO!)
  • If services are being offered. (N/A)
  • If we decide that you are using Carbonite as profit-making endeavour such as a business, however small it may be. (BINGO!)
  • If you would like to advertise for an outside company. (N/A)
You will indeed need a reseller subscription.

It will indeed - that's a cost of doing business.

if I decided not to continue, it wouldn't be worth it
Start with a one-month sub and take it from there. I would say give it a trial for 2-3 months. If after that time you can't get your profits up to just R 800 for the month, it's not worth your time, never mind the price of a sub.

Don't give up after just one month - nobody starts with a bang and sits back to retire.

Some motivation: When I started, after the end of the second month I decided it's time to get my paperwork in order. I bought a pile of random second-hand folders from Cash Crusaders for R 5 each because I couldn't spare the money for new. Now, a few years later, my only regret is that I didn't start years sooner.

Thanks so much Oj0 the breakdown and advice is very much appreciated. I've got 3 months off from campus coming up, so after my exams I can start operating, after working hours.
