Howdy all -

I commented on another post regarding importing a Steam Deck with Aramex and had a lot of queries on how that would work, I thought I'd summarise it for everyone here.

T's & C's
Take this with a pinch of salt, the reality of it is importing into SA is risky regardless of who you're doing it with, so make sure you're covered for such events. I've heard stories from a retro gaming community I interacted with of someone losing a massive shipment with a trusted shipping company, so make sure you're covered from opportunistic individuals.

I haven't imported a Deck myself, but this is how I'm planning to do so.

I'm not affiliated with Valve or MyUS/Aramex, so following this guide, is at your own risk.

Steam Deck box weight/dimensions

Using this post as an estimate to work from, which roughly equates to:
1.81437 kg, 45.72 x 15.24 x 12.7 cm

What is MyUS.com?
Similar to Aramex Global Shopper, they are a company that offers forwarding addresses in the US and UK. They ship through other shipping companies - like FedEX, DHL, etc.

Standard MyUS account is free.

Sidenote:
Duties are where you might get a surcharge, and is dependent on how the courier sets the product category. Gaming, for example, is 0% according to EasyShip. I'll be using 9% in my calculations according to the SARS import duties document I came across, on the last page.

I'm open to some insight into this for someone more familiar

Shipping cost roughly equates to:
USD 58.65 - FedEx Economy (2 - 5 days)
USD 73.49 - DHL Express (1 - 4 days)
MyUS charges an additional $6 to handle placing a fire hazard sticker as it has a LiPo battery.
Shipping insurance with MyUS is slightly more expensive @ $2.99 per $100 of the items value, so let's assume it costs $11.96

I'll be using the DHL option in my example, as I know that they do handle shipping dangerous goods.
Assuming you have your MyUS account setup:
  1. Get your favourite VPN
  2. Set it to use a North American server
  3. Create a new Steam account
  4. Set your address to the MyUS Forwarding Address in America ( you could set it elsewhere, but... Defeats the whole purpose)
  5. Order your Deck
  6. Await delivery to the MyUS address
  7. Upon delivery, give MyUS a day or so to process & link it to your account.
  8. Shipping will be calculated here, which you can choose to pay or at a later stage
  9. Your deck will be shipped to SA, you'll see some photos of the parcel etc uploaded on the MyUS tracking page
  10. When it comes into the country, you'll need to provide the invoice of what you paid for it (screenshot the email you received when making the purchase)
  11. Make the customs payment, you can choose to make the shipping payment together at this point too
  12. After customs has cleared it, it'll be delivered to your house
  13. ???
  14. Play with your Deck

Estimated cost breakdown:

MyUS account: R0
Steam Deck (64Gb): $399 (R6929,39)
MyUS Insurance: $11.96 (R207,71)
MyUS shipping via DHL: $73.49 (1276,29)
VAT: $59.85 (R1037,13)
Duties: R609,54 (9% of $399 according to above, $35.19)

Total: R10060.06

What is Aramex/Aramex Global Shopper?
Aramex is a shipping company. Aramex Global Shopper is a service they offer, allowing parcels delivered to one of their designated offices (hereby referred to as forwarding addresses) worldwide, where they will ship a package to you locally, handling the transport from your originating country to SA (in this context), assisting with Customs/tax payment and local delivery.
AGS offers a standard once-off account and a Flex (per month/per year) (Premium account) which reduces some shipping costs depending on weight and has some additional features.
For high-value items, AGS offers AGS Protect, which insures your item for $1 per $100 of value over an initial $100 value.

Standard AGS account: R75 once-off

Steam Deck box weight/dimensions
Using this post as an estimate to work from, which roughly equates to:
1.81437 kg, 45.72 x 15.24 x 12.7 cm

Shipping cost roughly equates to:
840.40 ZAR without Flex
687.50 ZAR with Flex

Ordering your Deck
The following is what I did to create an account to get a Steam Link when they were being sold at a ridiculously low price when Valve cleared their stock.

Sidenote:

AGS Shipping: R840.40

If I forgor💀 anything, let me know and I'll update.

Edit 1:
  • There may be a shipping charge when purchasing your Steam Deck and getting it delivered to Aramex in the US. Not sure what this is offhand.
  • Keep in mind the regular import rules from our beloved SARS - in a calendar year, no more than 3 items, or exceeding the value of R50 000 - otherwise you'll need to get an importers code.
Edit 2:

  • Updated to use MyUS instead of Aramex - as noted, Aramex doesn't ship hazardous items (and since this has a LiPo battery...)
  • I'm not planning on doing a group buy at this point, it's a lot to navigate regarding risk & finances, and I'd like to stay away from SARS' radar as much as I can

Thank you sir for the valuable input I was about to ask Carb if anyone has seen you. You were MIA lol. I saw your reddit post about this aswell. good stuff

This makes a deck a bit more affordable for me if I decide to do the import route

Also, there are some sellers on Amazon - the prices aren't bad on there and one thing with Amazon is import duties and taxes are precalculated, so you know exactly what you're paying up front. If the import duties are higher, Amazon absorbs the cost, but if they're lower, you get your money back :) You'll also be covered by the Amazon warranty/return policy

Only word of caution is some of the resellers can be dodgy, so check their ratings

I am looking to buy one like I've stated above eventually, when I go through the process I'll share any & all information here :)
I think I'm gonna hold off for a bit, I have a feeling that Valve may bring the Deck to SA. I'll wait until I give in to the CUD impulse🤣.

If an enticing deal happens to appear on Carb (and I'm online fast enough to even call dibs) I may also jump on that 🤣 Will also remain hopeful that we get Valve hardware here but it'll be a first when it happens, so hoping for the best, expecting the worst

Same here🤣, but I'm only really interested in 64GB models, anything more than that is out of my price range.

The lack of proper support here is the main thing holding me back. I'm a very risk averse person. The idea of being stuck with a brick deck and having to pay 2k-4k to ship it there and back for repairs sounds like a nightmare.

I doubt Valve will bring it, they will partner with someone.
I saw a post this week that they Partnered with Komodo for JPN, PRC and I believe South Korea.
And I was super stoked, until I realised that Komodo is not KOODOO.
But long story short, they will partner with someone like KOODOO and our taxes and logistics will F-Up the pricing.

I emailed Gabe asking about South Africa and he ignored my question 😓
But when I wished him Happy Birthday he did say thank you, so theres that :ROFLMAO:

Even if they partner with someone, its still official support so I'd be happy. You're right on the pricing, they'd charge the same as a PS5 probably.

I emailed Gabe too🤣, also no reply.
Maybe if we all email Gabe something will happen

Unless you have some sort of evidence backing this up, the answer is a big fat no. The SABS and ICASA will want to have this tested first, and judging by how the logitech g915 never got released here there is circumstantial evidence suggesting the chances of a local release are very low, if not nonexistent, for now.

Best partner is probably whoever does the import for the playstation/xbox/nintendo, they would have the most relevant industry knowledge to bring in what is effectively more a console than a pc.

Its actually easy to repair this thing. Also I know a place to order parts

Not sure about their policies now, but Aramex were no-no on any devices with batteries.
You should email their support just in case before you go through with it.

Say the screen is broken on arrival, how much would that cost to repair? Thats the thing I'm most worried about.

This post didn't age well; the Rand went to hell again (thanks ANC/EFF), and the buy rate for USD is currently around R18 (and climbing).

VAT is calculated a bit differently on imports, you're missing ATV on your calcs: Duties and Taxes for Importers | South African Revenue Service. [(Customs Value + 10% thereof) + (any non-rebated duties levied on the goods)] x 15% = [ATV] x 15% = VAT payable. In this case I expect it'll just be a straight 16.5%, as there's no duty on electronics (or at least nothing I've ever imported myself), so you could drop the 9%.

399 x 18 x 1.165 + 3 x 18 + 75 + 840.40 = R9336.43

You should email their support just in case before you go through with it.

Also this. Not sure if new lithium batteries count as "flammable", but if they do, you'll probably end up having to use a more expensive forwarder like MyUS that uses DHL/Fedex.

@igg @Deviation Thanks for this! I'll reach out to Aramex and ask what their thoughts are. Luckily their web chat is usually quick to respond and the service staff are helpful. When I get some feedback I'll relay it here

I was thinking this too as I have done it before and not been charged any duties, but if there's no charge it's a bonus 🤷‍♂️

The bad news -
Looks like you were right. Aramex won't import a device fitted with a LiPo battery themselves, but;

The good news -

They referred me to MyUS.com and I had a chat with their agent. They're capable of importing it with an additional fee of $6 to place the relevant stickers on the parcel. 🤷‍♂️

Will update the post this evening.

If you're going down the route anyway - what's the chances of me hopping on to that purchase bandwagon?
Wondering if customs, taxes etc etc might be somewhat cheaper bringing in more than one device on the same order?

I was actually thinking the same thing. It might be cheaper on a group buy

Group buy, ie bulk will attract SARS like flies to shit.

Good luck getting it released then. I know a gent who bought a stack of VW radios in from China, about 15 units. SARS held onto them for 6 months before releasing. As he didn't have an importers code. and even when given his code. they took another 3 months to release.

Rather solo buy and deal with it yourself.

Shucks okay thanks for the heads up. Will solo queue

As @Ageless_ZA mentioned:

That's my only concern... I do have an importers code, which isn't an issue - but the implications are that if I import multiple devices, they'd want to know what the others are for (ie. reselling), and that I need to declare any profits on them, etc etc

I'd also like to at least go through the process of importing one myself as proof of getting one into the country, document any issues + the costs involved here for everyone to know what the experience is 😊

Edit:

Also handling the money & risk, warranties... That's so much work man...

I think if you bring one in, you have to basically write off the 11k or so that you spend. If you need more info on bringing a deck in @animehero brought in a 64GB unit and upgraded the SSD. He wrote a bit about it somewhere here on carb, can't remember the thread. @redarrow also brought one in. Both via MyUS. They paid around R10600-10800. A bit more expensive than Aramex. I'm pretty sure MyUS can ship the deck back to the US for repairs/returns if needed but they will charge you for shipping. Same story with @ScottulusMaximus but I'd rather deal with a local company if I need to make an RMA.
