@Born2Fish is away for the weekend, so he left all his gear with me.

The hd6xx are amazing with the r2r11, the udsd doesn't do them justice.
The shp's sound amazing on the udsd. So ima change the pads on the shp so that my ear doesn't touch the driver and run that for a while.

Perhaps I'll just yolo and grab @Deviation stuff xD. But then I'll probably have to find a new wife.

I just don't know, there is so much shit and it's sooooo expensive. Experimenting is too costly. LIke getting hd800's sounds like an awesome idea, but what if I just don't like the sound and is the price over the 6xx's justified. hmmmmmmmm.....

So I'll just keep waiting for @Born2Fish to buy things so I can test it and see what I like. xD

Now I'm having strange urges for a fire hazard of a Dark Voice 336SE on my desk. I like to fiddle so tube rolling is right up my alley and seems tubes are worth trying on a 6XX. But then I have other urges for more headphones and there's this pesky HD800 floating around. First world problems.

I was under the impression the shp pads are not replaceable?

I think you should just do it

You will love tubes dude. Everyone wants a DV. :D

The 6XX has it's limitations. Have you compared it with a HD650? There is a whole world still out there to be explored dude.

They are stuck on, so you have to moer them off, but then the replacement pads fit right on. At least according to what I read on reddit.

If anyone want's to sell hd6xx or hd 650's message me first! Else I'll have to get some delivered from drop to my cousin in EU.

Can definitely see the cost cutting in build quality on the 58x...

Umm the 6XX is an HD650. Shorter cable, dark blue and with massdrop written on it being the only difference...

Everything is replaceable if you are willing to mod a bit. ;)
Nah. Mine's still way too new for any sort of permanent mods.

I'll be honest. since my acquisition of the 1Mores, I kinda lost interest in upgrading anything else. I haven't been looking at dacs and amps lately, and my O2 project seems to have hit a wall too.

:p I could hear a difference back to back.
Also, with regards to build quality there is A LOT of difference. That is why I asked if you've tried the HD650. They are definitely not the same headphone.

Expanding on this...

I am not saying the audio is very different. The treble shift is subtle, but noticeable if you listen for it. The HD600/HD650 are well known, consistent, "analytical", boring headphones. They have no X factor. They are just very good. You know what you are getting every time.

With 'limitations', I am referring to their fun factor. If you are exploring tubes, consider getting something a bit darker, or more V shaped. Something fun and revealing for your tubes. That makes you smile when you throw them on because they make everything sound refreshing and new.. Don't know how to word what I am trying to say exactly.

Were the pads the same age?

Yeah, new pads on both. Else the test would not be fair. :p

Did the comparison on a few headphones as well, not just 2. Same with the HD58X being a HD660. Although their sound difference is much more than the difference between a 650 and a 6XX.

Anyone tried these yet ?

Although in all fairness, it is difficult NOT to hear a difference when you are searching for a difference. Just how the headphones feel on your head might cause you to think there is a difference.

To some it matters, to others it does not. I just don't like taking things by other people's word. I want to try and compare for myself.

All the Drop variants in headphones that I have tested so far are significantly lower in build quality than the ones they are based on...You sacrifice something when you buy a $350 product for $200.

I know the 650 is generally regarded as boring. I really enjoy mine. They also sound very warm after long sessions with the 800S - which I love. Very nice on tubes as well. I can think of no better headphone to start this journey with. Edit: as is well known now, it shines with juice.

Actually.... I am retracting my like. I was well happy with the 58x... Now I want to try the 660 again! Why you make me spend money??

Hmm interesting.

Almost looks like a DT990/880 variant with a mic on? A bit pricy though.

Would also love to hear some feedback if someone here buys this.
I rate that's exactly what it is... To get the gaming market to buy "the best gaming headphones". Be interested to see if the MMX scratches off to reveal DT...

What was the headphones we all started this journey with? Mine was a pair of philips stereo and a sound blaster live...

Haha! I've had many headphones over the years, started with the unbreakable Sennies HD280. But for me the journey truly started with the 650 / R2R11 pairing.

@PandaAttack1 There were also quite a few variations of the HD650 over the years which could also explain the difference you saw. AFAIK the 6XX is based on the latest 2016 drivers so if you have an older pair of HD650s they could well sound quite different. I have no complaints on build quality with my 6XX but will try and borrow a HD650 some day to try. I mean if I had spent $350 dollars on an HD650 I'd also want to believe it was better than the cheaper 6XX I'm sure haha. Perception is a powerful thing. General consensus in all my research shows they're essentially the same. Not worth spending more on another set of something that could be identical at the end of the day.

HD 650 vs 6XX

But maybe I'm talking crap, someone send me a HD650 so I can do a thorough test :ROFLMAO: .

might buy them on prime day depending on the discount,
have only read extremely good reviews

I think you're taking sense. I got my 650 for 3400 on AVF. It was a one year old new set. Never been used. 2016 drivers. I also researched both the 6xx and 650 but I specifically wanted the 650. I have no idea if there's actually an audible difference between them.

Why would it be a 990 or 880 and not 1990 or 1770? The price is certainly enough to be the higher tier product.

I wanted to get that MMX 300 a long time ago, till I realised that having mic and headphone together is a VERY bad idea in the audio rabbithole because you need an All-in-one device then that can take a mic, and those are basically non-existent higher up, only in the low-middish end. So it's like putting a stop-gap on your journey that ends at the Mayflower Arc.
