GPU Cost Per Frame Analysis - South Africa Edition!

It is almost criminal how the cost per frame rises as the cards get faster. IMO it should be the other way round.

@thecurto You know what would be epic. Checking the last average price of the last 5 sales of a particular GPU on carb.
Then getting a cost per from frame based on average second hand prices. Just saying. ;)

Haha if you bring me the data, I'll build the graphs. Definitely, don't have that much free time on my hands 😅

And we're back with another episode of Before You Buy (a GPU)! That thread where we give you some straight up frame rates, and our first impression of latest GPUs releasing. As usual it's me, a random person on the internet, and today we're checking out some not-so-Super GPUs, along with a new 'meh' Radeon card.

Kinda confirms my suspicion. The RX 6800 from Woot seems great value (sadly at R9k) compared to the newer cards. That said I like the 7800 XT too.

Yep, it's hands down the best value mid-ranger at the moment. It wipes the floor with the 4060 Ti 16GB, and costs R1000 less. What a mess this last gen was!

With specials on the 7700 XT bringing it in line with the 6800 it's still a great deal. 4Gb more VRAM and uses less power.

Benchmarks are very similar though in most benchmarks.

Agreed. And all the latest frame gen tech is available on the 6800 as well so it’s still the one to go for until all the stock dries up

One to look out for:

Thanks, I'll add this one to the charts as soon as the pricing goes live

How often are prices adjusted?

One to look out for:

Here's the first price I can see and it's very competitive: XFX Radeon RX 7900 GRE MERC Gaming RX-79GMERCB9 16GB GDDR6 256-bit PCI-E 4.0 Desktop Graphics Card - Wootware

I reckon it should push the price of the 7800 XT down over time as well.

I'll update all the numbers based on HUB's 7900 GRE review tomorrow.

February/March 2024 Update
Nothing much to write home about with the RX 7900 GRE launch, unfortunately, coming in at R12,999. It has pushed the RX 7800 XT down to R11,999 which is a win but the extra R1,000 is roughly equivalent to the $50 premium in the US.

I noticed that HUB reviewed the reference model which has slightly lower clock speeds than the 3rd-party AIB cards, so the performance bump should be slightly higher than what is seen on the charts. Either way, it is scaling fairly linearly compared to the RX 7800 XT.

The one caveat is that the ray-tracing performance of the RX 7900 GRE is much better than the RX 7800 XT, and that alone should make it worth the extra R1000 if you're in the market for a new GPU in this price range.

The RTX 4070 Super is an additional R800 compared to the 7900 GRE and is still the best value Nvidia card in this segment if you don't have VRAM range anxiety.

Edit: Link to charts added for convenience.

This is Awesome.

Wondering, where would the 3060ti fall on this scale? ( I have one so just wondering) haha

I did some quick checking now, and according to me it would be around R100.80 per frame.
Avrg fps of 114 on 1440p @ R11 500 per card...
Source:
1440P FPS
Price

which is rather good I think?
can you maybe confirm?

Glad you like it, and happy to help!

The 3060 Ti is a bit tricky since the price of a new one is more than the price of the 4060 Ti so the cost per frame number won't look that great.

The FPS source has to be consistent across the whole lineup as HUB use different games & different drivers for each GPU they review.

So I try to find a review that has as many GPUs in the list as possible and use TechPowerUp's GPU database (link to your exact card here) to estimate the performance of the missing cards. They have a basic relative performance chart which helps greatly.

With that in mind a 3060 Ti is about 11% slower than a 4060 Ti and assuming you got it for a similar price, it would have a slightly higher cost per frame than the 4060 Ti.

The cheapest new card at Wootware goes for R10,889 / divided by the estimated 1440p FPS of 61 will give you R178.50 per frame which is pretty terrible value.

It's also why the entire list is made up of Palit and XFX GPUs as Wootware is able to import these directly for a much cheaper price and it keeps the comparison fair-ish. As soon as you add suppliers to the chart, the CPF numbers start to balloon.

That makes sense, hahaha.
my calcs where way off, haha..
Thanks for the explanation..

AMD does seem to be the best bang for your buck in general?

As far as I know this is the exact card I have...

Bought second hand here on carb.. hehe.
for 5k...

I play on triple 1080p monitors and limit my fps to 60...
as my screens are only 60Hz...

If I dont limit it runs to about 115FPS or so..

So in my cost per frame is R43/Frame..

Good enough for me. haha

Get a high refresh rate monitor, you can't go back after experiencing it.

If only they were so darn expensive...
i have 3 x 27" now, and cant imagine going to 24"..

Plan is there to get 75Hz, but then I might as well get 120Hz but then I might as well get 144Hz but then ill need a 8090Ti super MNR RTX ultra + GPU to run that... hahaha...

I can already smell my bank card melting.. haha

120Hz Monitor costs 12k x 3 = 36k

75Hz Monitor costs 3.5k x 3 = 12k

So 75Hz seems good enough. haha

No point going from 60 to 75. You'll barely notice, if at all.

Are you playing games on all 3 screens at the same time? If you're just using the middle one you can upgrade just that one to 144Hz+ and leave the other two.

But yeah if you're using all three then you have to upgrade them all.

yeah I know they're quite expensive. But seriously , it's something you'll shoot yourself in the foot for not doing it any earlier.

I do use all three for gaming yes,
mainly do Sim Racing, then I do play some Scum (Survival Game), War thunder, Farming Sim etc.

For the Sim racing the triple is extremely useful but more of a Luxury than a Must have, just looks so darn cool on my RIG. haha..
then I have tried playing scum with just the center monitor, but the amount of peripheral sight I lose makes it feel so empty. (I keep looking around to see my sides, where with the triple i always see my sides) - feels more realistic of what they human eye can see...
also a luxury, but I don't think ill go back to a single monitor for any type of gaming...
Triples are Amazing... at the cost of refresh rate.

That is rather appealing for a replacement... any Idea of the bezel on that G3?
from what I can see it looks thin AF...

PS. I have been looking for screens, now that I have the GPU to power it, its my next upgrade.

Curved probably isn't your thing but I got this:

R4599 27" QHD 165Hz curved
