Hi all,

I work in the DRC as an expat and want to try console gaming in my free time. Im not sure which console to get.

I have a few things to consider:
- will be using a 1080p screen
- internet is poor to null most times so downloads/digital games might be a tough one.
- Dont want an expensive console incase they break in and steal it
- wont be traveling with it, will remain in the DRC

I was thinking a xbox one x or a ps4 pro. I was even considering the series s but not sure how it will work offline.
I dont have any prefrence to a console so will appreciate any opinions on diffrent consoles as well.

Anybody with some info/ideas perhaps?

If you're on 1080p, the regular PS4 will cut it. Got a Pro from an insurance claim and saw 0 improvements over my regular one on a 1080p TV. No harm if they're going for the same price though

PS tends to have a lot more story-driven games that'd be better suited to offline, whereas Xbox is kinda focused on their online ecosystem. Again, just personal experience

Second hand switch is great, can play on your tv and take it with on commutes.
Ps3 is also still a great console and games are super cheap

Awesome thanks guys, I haven't actually paid any attention to the switch so will read up about it as well.
I think a second hand PS4 should be good as well as it will only be used for 1080p occasional gaming.

Does the xbox series s require a permanent internet connection when you want to playgames?
Or can you download the games and keep it offline to play without updates?

To play offline on the Xbox One, you have to go into network settings and select the option go offline. That should then let you play the games offline. You have to make sure you have the Xbox set as your home xbox to do this. You also have to be online first to put the console in offline mode.

in addition, Can you play Xbox series S without internet?

Yes and No. You need the internet on the Xbox Series S to buy and download games as it has no disk drive. However, after you have bought the game, installed it, and made that Xbox your Home (Primary) Xbox, you can play without internet verification again. It is the same on the Xbox Series X for digital games.

From here: Why can’t I play my games offline Xbox One?.
