Hi all!

I have the following question and need a bit of advice from the experienced techies...

I currently have a Benq XL2730Z monitor and it is being powered by a rx580 4GB gpu.

I need to upgrade the gpu because i like framerates that is above 70 fps and have to go to 1080p in AAA titles.

Now here is my question:

1. Is freesync really worth it and I should go and get a vega card for higher frames?
Or
2. Freesync is not worth it and go and get a 1080.
Or
3. Sell the monitor get a sync one with a nvidia graphics card?

I am actually curious to hear from someone who has freesync monitor with a nvidia graphics card.

Thank you!

Honestly if you like the screen, I would definitely stick with it and just throw in a 1080. Freesync is definitely a nice trick with amd cards, but if you can get the power to the monitor and either cap or vsync then I wouldn't worry. Same goes for gsync, gsync is slightly better in that it has a greater Hz range , but comes at a cost. If you can deal with slight tearing or pixel drops, then just get yourself a 1080 and be happy, if you can't deal with tearing then switch , but right now a 1080 is far better value then a Vega card . Really comes down to what you like and opinions.

TLDR: pick 2

Aww thanks man! So I shouldn’t experience to much tearing? And turning on v-sync won’t make the games more laggy?

That is the thing! 1080’s are the same price as a vega 56 so it is really ridiculous! That is why I am asking for advice!

But thanks for your 2cents! It helps a lot with my decision!

If you can pump the pixels which the 1080 will be able to do in most cases you shouldn't experience much.
And generally I prefer having a frame cap to vsync, but to each their own depending what type of game. Fast fps twitch shooters either I go unlocked or frame cap. But single player RPG / MMO vsync does the job.

Are you already using Freesync on that monitor?

Both Freesync and G-Sync are incredible in my opinion. I have tried both and simply cannot go back to not having it. Once you have no tearing, seeing it again will rip your brain in two.

I myself now have G-Sync, because I just got sick of waiting for AMD to update it's high-end cards.

That being said, G-Sync is not really any better than Freesync, so if your monitor can already do Freesync well, just get a Vega card. They are more expensive than the Nvidia equivalents locally, but considering what your cost of switching to G-Sync/Nvidia will be, it's cheaper to just go Vega.

Having a Freesync monitor with an Nvidia card is just silly if you ask me. You have this awesome feature that is just sitting there and cannot be used.

Sitting in the same boat, have a Asus XG27VQ, freesync monitor, and I have a asus 1060 6gb. Want to upgrade. I know nvidia trumps amds gpu's......... and although the 1080ti is much better than the rx64 they go for more or less the same price...... I think it should be looked at from another perspective.

Your gpu and monitor go hand in hand, so to get a better idea of the actual cost you should add the costs of the monitor and gpu to see what you get for your money.

Gsync monitors are much more expensive than the freesync equivalent.

This is all based on the research I did, In short I will most likely upgrade to a amd gpu.

Also same boat, have Acer XG270HU 27" WQHD with FreeSync and a GTX 1060 6G.

Thought about upgrading, getting a vega 58 or 64. Cause I rate getting a G-Sync monitor will cost more i.e. not a straight trade for my monitor, and would have to upgrade card as well.

Yeah it's tricky. I was in the same situation previous gen. Problem for me was how long AMD took to refresh their cards. New Nvidia cards out now, but AMD? Who knows, might years before a high-end refresh. Meaning your Vega will have to keep you going for quite a long time, and you might get frustrated with how poorly it starts performing, especially at 144hz, 1440p on AAA games.

I made the switch to G-Sync and Nvidia, though it was painfully expensive. I just think Nvidia is more reliable with their timing in refreshing cards.

But I mean I'm no fanboy, Freesync is an equally great technology and a Vega might do you just fine until AMD refreshes their cards. Just depends on your needs.

Yeah I totally get you point, if I could trade my monitor plus 1k or so for a gsync then pick up a 1080 I definitely would.

But I feel like the trade would be difficult, gsync monitors getting snapped up and not many people going from Nvidia to AMD.

I know the struggle it is really bad!!

Like I got an upgrade to an 1080 gigabyte g1 model, from an RX 580 4gb gigabyte model for only 3k.

I currently have a BenQ XL2730 monitor, I have not yet tested the 1080 on the monitor but I have received low bawl offers like 5.5k when the monitor is more than that and not even a year old...

It is just sad to see that AMD is struggling... and that a vega 56 aftermarket card is more expensive than a 1080...
