My PC is as old as the ark - I7 Gen2 something with SSD drives and 16GB DDR3. The GPU died at one stage and I replaced it with a 710 as its only function was hosting PLEX which is does perfectly - and the odd school printing project.

My 6 year old son now wants to play games. Cool I will just get a new rig. Wow did I lose touch with PC prices. New PC is not going to happen now. Can I just get a new GPU for now and see how it performs ?
Motherboard has PCI express Gen3.

Do I get a secondhand 1080Ti and pray it hasn't been mined to the moon or back or get this: XFX Radeon RX 6600 Speedster SWFT 210 Core RX-66XL8LFDQ 8GB GDDR6 128-bit PCI-E 4.0 Desktop Graphics Card - Wootware RX 6600@ R6.8k from Wootware?

I heard I should stay clear of PClinkcomputers and Evetech is this still the case ?

He also wants a coloured KB and Mouse - R2k keyboards and R2k mouse's - Im still in disbelieve. Ive never felt this old.

Thanks everyone for all the great advice and the PMs really appreciate it.

I managed to get a RTX2080 yesterday

My old power supply only has 2x 6pin PCE power plugs and the graphics card requires 2x 8pin connectors.

I see Geewiz sells 6 pin to 8pin converters will these be ok or am I spending more money on a new power supply (the existing one is rated at 700W)

i think the 2080 requires minimum 750W to not bottle neck powering everything else...to be on the safe side....850W and above.

This is so apt.

Surely the bottleneck on a 2nd gen I7 paired with a 2080 will be insane. I would have rather suggested getting something like a 1070/1070 and trying to jump to 7/8th gen or even a smaller ryzen setup for the money.

I have a mechanical keyboard and mouse for your son if you want.

All the best with the build.

No, Nvidea has 650 as minimum it's not a horribly peaky 30 series card either.

Oof they might work... Although there is serious consideration to the PSU if it comes with only 2*6, especially as an 8 pin is rated for twice the power draw of a 6 pin and some can definitely exceed that "spec" but others not so much.

Might advise a new PSU but then again on a second gen that card is definitely bottlenecked so the GPU probably won't pull full power.

I would definitely do a 750 watt PSU minimum.

The spike in demand can cause your PSU overcurrent protection to shut it down.

I'm being a very large idiot and running a 3080 off a 650 watt Corsair TX PSU. I have a SF750 watt PSU which I need to install.

Edit: I looked at a review, the 2080 is far better at not spiking past its wattage rating so I think you'll be fine.

Nice score though getting a 2080. I suggested the 6600 on price and its a 120W card iirc. But given that you have a 2080 and need the power tell us what PSU you have (or did I miss it in the thread). PSUs aren't all made equal and if we know we can at least try to help you avoid grenading your system. Also, if you say Raidmax you are dead to me! ;)

This will be the case with 4000 series Nvidia or 7000 series AMD due to new PCIe power spec.
So if you want to go new cpu and gpu you will be upgrading your entire pc due to DDR4 upgrade for Ram, and PCIe spec change for GPU Power.
So New GPU = New PSU
New CPU > New Board > New Ram and Storage because why not utilize gen4 pcie for storage as well and get rid of the gen3 nvme's :)
Oh and obviously seeing as you are rebuilding your pc you might as well get a new case and new fans and more RGB.,

gosh...this escalated so quickly xD

Just an update

I got a pin adapter for the graphics card power.

It's now six week and the little man is playing without any issues.
