Hi all,

Openserve are installing fiber in our area. There are some deals avail where they include install costs and a router.

If anyone has signed up for a bundle, is the router the CPE or is it an additional router ?
I have a Unifi USG, can i plug that directly into the CPE or will i need a separate router ?

Is there anything i need to know ? pit falls, scams etc ? before i sign up with any particular ISP (thinking of staying with Afrihost whom currently manage my ADSL).

Just signed up with Afrihost everything is free and it's faster and cheaper than Adsl

www.fibretiger.co.za should list all the packages available to you along with the best pricing and packages.
What I understand from the people I know with fibre, most of the deals you have to stay with that ISP for a minimum of 12 months. If you cancel with them you are liable for the installation fee.

Here in Durban, most of us will get coverage maybe 2030.

The USG can be used directly on the cpe ye but more importantly AFAIK for all the isps if their service mentions "free router" you can explicitly tell them you don't want it so that if you decide to cancel the service early (month to month package but say cancel within 6 months) there won't be a penalty where they charge you for the router you didn't need lol - that's the one pitfall. Other potential pitfall is if you decide to switch isps but if you find out in the beginning what information you need and record that it should be fine.

Anyone with fibre that has an answer to this? Or can i buy something like the MikroTik hAP lite SOHO 2GHz WiFi Router and use it as a cpe? (The router comes with a "RouterOS L4 license" which after some research i found that you need an L3 lisence to run CPE but it cant be bought individually).... Links Below

If the ISP is offering a router it's an actual wifi router they give you, the "installation" gives you the CPE.

If offered for "free" by the ISP there's usually a "claw back" clause where if you cancel within X months you have to pay for the router and installation or a penalty fee.

The cpe is included and will be installed by the fibre providers (backbone). Depending on the ISP a seperate budget router will be given during activation (and some have fixed activation costs) but you can (and I highly suggest that you do) request not to get one. But if you stick with the same isp for over 6 months you got yourself a "free" router (unless isp did a flexible activation).

For openserve indeed
Some lads like vodacom provide a router and directly terminates on it
