Clean models for both are around the same price
Need a reliable "daily", generally do 10k a year something to drive comfortably when going on a holiday in the western cape (2-6 hour trip for example)
Have a small car already which is great for daily things, not so great on the long road or when I don't feel like changing gears

If you have a better suggestion by all means pop it into the chat - I'd love an old Honda crv 2nd gen but finding a good one is hard and always expensive
2 kids so four dour only haha

What are the mileages of both?

Which engine model Jazz?

What is your current small car?

I love Jazzes and the 1.5L model is better on the open road than, say, a Picanto. But probably not better than the BM.

The BM also probably has a bigger boot? For taking four people on holiday?

Around 100-180k, seen Jazz auto with 180km for like R120K
I would prefer the 1,5 auto, prices for the 1.3 are very similar
grand i10 1.2
I've owned two first gen Jazz (1,4 dsi & 1,5 vtec both manual) so definitely love them and would most likely go for 2nd gen face lift if I do go Jazz route
Yeah four people on holiday - kids are young, they still in boosters but their luggage space usage isn't terrible

Sorry just to clarify this @goldfritter - "What are the mileages of both?"
I don't have specific cars that I'm looking at purchasing so cant advise on mileage yet

if you're going for the 320d be sure it has the n57 engine mainly from the 2009 model +
more reliable , less issues .

Can't comment on Honda.

320D is a solid car with a very good engine. But maintenance can become an issue. Parts are not cheap when they need to be replaced.
There is no spare tyre, you will be using run-flats. Ride quality will be stiffer. Depending on tyre size and rim etc, you looking at + R2300 per tyre (based on 225/45R17 Bridgestone Potenza Re050). and there are other things that will start to add up.

*Autocorrect*
N47 engine

just to add as Dino_Rox said from 2009+ the N47tu engine as the timing chains were revised and they are bulletproof if maintained correctly.

Yebo 320D, I have E46 for sale :)

Thing pulls like freight train even after 20 years!

Where are all the old 320D or the 325tds its very rare to see them here on the road in Durban ? But I see many very old Honda's on the road .

If your budget is R100-180k then get a Gen 3 Jazz auto, I've seen them in that price range, it's a big step up from the gen 2 interior.
The Gen 2 pre face lift is the best value though, it's better than the facelift in a variety of ways, they also have torque converter auto's and not CVT so absolutely nothing can break on them.
That being said the 320D is a far better and bigger vehicle in many respects but the maintenance can get rather pricey whereas a Jazz is near bulletproof.

Thanks man, 100-180km was mileage (typo), budget around R100k
Good to know on the pre face lift jazz! Yep but I've also heard great things about the 320D e90 lci being extremely reliable if maintained correctly and with all preventative maintenance done. Stories of guys hitting 300 000km without changing the timing chain or turbo :?

Damn did not know this had no spare, run flats aren't great :( may be a real deal breaker
Wanting a comfortable ride so definitely no M package if I go this route

(speaking from a F30 320D pov) Regardless of it being an e series or f series the diesel vehicles from BMW are great. Many people run the engines for years if they well maintained. My friend drives a Honda jazz not sure which one but he gets a higher mileage than i do ( He's is 8 and mine is 7.6 ) ,also currently diesel prices are at a high hopefully they decrease but i am biased and i think 320d's are beautiful and fun cars provided as advised by other members you get the car with the better diesel engine. As for the run flats some of my friends exchange them with normal tires not sure if you would manage to then fit a spare in the back ( and I'm not sure if insurance will cover you for that ) that being said take the car for a drive because I don't think its that much uncomfortable than using normal tires i generally find it fine ( it is however smoother with normal tires ) .

Now the bad news is that a lot of older BMWs especially second hand ones aren't looked after properly. Never ending oil leaks, timing chains etc. Be weary as people lie all the time. Also servicing can be a kick in the butt sometimes. Make sure you can afford to service the car especially with many places quoting even after market parts at such high prices due to supply issues. Recently both my front and back brakes needed to be replaced and it was a rude awakening. However i drive like a normal person and usually brakes only need to be replaced every 2-3 years depending on how much travelling you do ( I did a little less than 20 000 kms this year ). All in all if you find a well maintained BMW you won't regret it but if you make the mistake and buy one that isn't well maintained service's and money to fix that car will keep you awake at night. I've never heard any bad things about the Honda Jazz and I'm assuming maintaining will be a lot cheaper i see a lot of people driving the car especially with families.

The 320D can be ridiculously reliable but if you aren't lucky you can expect some pretty heavy repair bills, R20-30k if things get ugly whereas with the Jazz if you are incredibly unlucky and blow the engine you can get a whole import motor for under R10k last I checked.

If you have some space in your budget for potential repairs get the 320D and if you don't or don't want any surprises later then get the Jazz.
For R100k you can get a really nice Mk2 1.5 Auto, especially if you are up in Gauteng/inland because the prices there are better, Hondas are very popular in Cape Town so they go for a bit more down there.

Thanks for this - WC so prices are quite steep here for this variant, often going into gen 3 price territory

I’m pretty sure you can find the crv for 100k in Jhb. I have looked myself and found a few but never followed through yet. In WC the prices are ridiculous though. My old ballade constantly gets offers from strangers of 50k+… I’m pretty sure I’ll get more if I ever decide to put her up for sale.

Your choices are pretty much narrowed down though. Have you looked at other brands? Specifically Toyota. I have found the Corolla to be a great car which is light on fuel, easy to maintain and comes with that Toyota reliability. Great balance of small reliable engine which is easy to maintain like the jazz, coupled with the space and size like the bmw for those longer trips.
