How badly is it affecting other CISP users? I've had a crap 2 days being denied the COD beta and then DSTV streaming the rugby world cup. I literally had to run down the road to catch the last 20min of the Boks losing. So annoying... Not the Bokke, I thought they showed some serious skill/intent - the makings of a team destined for the finals.

I am prepped to move to another provider based on my experience this weekend. I know it's not their fault and all but I will not continue to be debited ZAR for a service that can't be guaranteed. I'm pretty sure they would cut the service off to me if my bank got DDoS'd and they didn't get their payment when it was due. That shiz would happen in a heartbeat.

Does anyone have any solid Vumatel based ISP's to recommend for me, please?
Thanks!

Horrible. 35% packet loss in CSGO, local. Just ironic, it's my holiday... And all I wanted to do was relax and play. Can't.

I am unhappy.

This is what caused the Rugby streaming:

Well this is fun...
Missed the rugby...

AAAAND its a long weekend :)

Dstv now worked perfectly for me during the rugga. No issues . Cool Ideas got DDOS like 2 ore 3 times the last few weeks

My friend and I are moving off of Cool Ideas, this most likely won't stop any time soon and I just don't have the patience for it. I don't have any Vumatel specific ISPs to recommend but we are going to try out Afrihost and see how that goes.

Have a look at rocket net.
Another mate if mine is using them on Vumatel

Yeah DSTV is working again but other services are still down. I can't play any online games and twitch won't even load the thumbnails of streams, never mind streaming anything. Netflix is also knackered. So over this now.

Less than a month with them and I've had 2 weekends of DDoS and 2 days of crappy latency and packet loss.
I'm done with them. Moving away tomorrow.

Why does cool ideas specifically get affected... not any other providers. Do they have different security measures etc. ?

I've spoken to a couple of people this morning.
These are the 3 choices for me now.

VOX
Home Connect
Seacom

I missed half of the Dam All Black's vs Springboks game, On top of that i lagged out a few times playing a scrim in R6 Siege!
Switched ovr to afrihost now, Had to give the a months notice, should be on afrihost in about 8 days.

I'm with Vox, absolutely no issues with regards to network performance, however dealing with their accounts dept (if you ever need to upgrade or downgrade) leaves alot to be desired....

That being said, I'm happy with the network quality and price I pay for my 50mb line

Talked to my people at home. We have never been unhappy with CoolIdeas accounts dept, admin, or helpdesk. Feels wrong to blame them for something out of their control, unless DDOS mitigation is in their control.

Can someone more knowledgeable tell me if it's within their control to do complete DDOS mitigation so that my internet experience is unaffected? Or are they the victims here?

My experience with them has been shockingly poor.

You should have seen the backlash online. It wasn't because of the DDoS attack but how they actively avoided engaging with us.
A simple pinned tweet, a message on their website (One appeared 6 hours after the issues started), Not answering the phone at all.
They literally gave us radio silence.

Let's not forget, this is now the 2nd time this month where their network was down for more than 48 hours.
You should have systems in place to help mitigate/protect against things like this.

Also on vox and have no issues what so ever with them.

Outages on my side is usually due to the fiber provider but at most its a 30 minute outage that i have experienced

Ive never dealt with one myself - but DDOS attacks are quite difficult to quickly fix. As I understand it - the hardest part is filtering out legitimate traffic, while blocking the hundreds of attacking computers - even if you do "filter out" the "attack traffic" the impact the filtering out has on your hardware is quite large, and enough to bottleneck bandwidth (be it CPU processing etc).

Blizzard had a DDOS attack and it took hours for them to try fix - and even then - things took another good few hours to eventually settle down.

Essentially - yes they are a victim here - but as an ISP (who to my knowledge has extensive expirience in this - it is something you need to plan for and have risk mitigation in place for)

@souljazk - can maybe elaborate a bit more than I.

I'v also never delt with one. With things like DoH / DoT (DNS over TLS) I don't know if they can scan them properly, and IF not, a DDoS could (in theory ) be impossible to stop.

I think the issue lies in their response to the situation. I had to search around and read forums to get an idea of the issues to the service, or lack thereof, that I was getting. If I wasn't an "internet savvy" person, then I would have had no idea why my service was affected. For every person I saw complaining on Twitter, I thought, how many more had no idea what the hell was going on?

CISP have users cell numbers, I have received SMS's from them in the past. So why not send an SMS when there is a massive outage on their network? Over a weekend, for days at a time? PR and customer retention. That's why.

Either way, I know what's up and I know that my money deserves better than this. I do feel bad for the tech's having to deal with this crisis, but they are not being supported by a proper technical team or customer liaison team. All the while, they are not the cheapest ISP so, in my opinion, be offering better than this.

Competition is important and this use case proves it for me. Hopefully they find a solution soon, but I'm not sticking around to find out what that is while paying for the solution to be discovered.

Just got home and tried to watch some Twitch. Dead as a door nail. 160p won't even show me a still image. And they tell customers, "we have made a change and seen some improvement *high five* thank you for your patience". Really?

A more inadequate statement, I have not heard from a service provider in my many years as an internet user.

Im on Cool Ideas, so far its seems to be stable. But I wonder how long that's gonna last

Im also considering switching ISP's but for other reasons.

Anyone using Wirulink?? lol

Just make sure it's not because of their scheduled maintenance. The timeline for that has been up for a while. Check under announcements, I think.
