Hey all, I just got the above mentioned router from my dad who was using it for his ADSL at home before he got fiber about a month ago, the router was working 100% for him. I've set up a good couple of routers before without issue but for the life of me I can't get this thing to sync my line.

My old/current router is a TP-Link something that has no issue connecting to the internet, so I've mirrored all the settings necessary from that one to the Asus, yet it refuses to sync.

I have the settings as:

Modulation: Auto-sync up (But I've tried: ADSL2/G.DMT and others to no avail)
Annex: A (But also tried all the others)
Transfer mode: ADSL WAN(ATM)
VPI: 8
VCI: 35
Service Category: UBR (Also tried CBR)

Obtain the WAN DNS is auto.
Obtain the LAN IP is auto.
(Although I've tried using IPs from the connected TP-Link)

NAT is on

PPPoe Username and password is correctly entered, even tried the Openweb guest account

And everything else is pretty much default.

The only noticeable setting that's different on the ASUS vs the TP-Link is the MTU, which is 1480 on the TP-Link and 1492 on the ASUS which are both defaults for themselves, although I don't think this can affect it?

Also if I plug my phone line into the TP-Link it syncs, change routers then nothing, so it's not the line at fault.

What I did notice though, is that my line takes quite a while to sync like 30 or so seconds on the TP-Link, it only syncs after like the 5th try, could it be possible that the TP-Link has a longer sync attempt time after a few failed tries? Where the ASUS tries to sync for a fixed 10 seconds or so? I'm not sure, but I did see that the TP-Link has an Echo interval setting which is 30 by default, I can't find any such setting on the ASUS, is that setting the Sync time?

If there's anyone who has set one of these up, or that has more router knowledge than me that can please help me or at least tell me where to look I will be super grateful :)

Hey Ravin

Are you using it for ADSL or Fibre?

I have the N55U on a fibre line but you must make sure that under WAN settings it is set at Ethernet WAN.

Obviously this is not relevant if you are using it for adsl but I know that barely anything is different between fibre and adsl. I had both fibre and adsl plugged in for awhile and the only setting that changed was dual WAN for it to switch between fibre and adsl.

If you don't come right PM me your email or cell and I will screenshot my router settings when I'm back at home. Maybe you will be able to spot the difference.

Haha I guess I should have mentioned, I'm on ADSL 4mb line. But that could be a huge help, I'll PM you my e-mail in a bit. Thanks bud

i've also struggled my arse off with this router and telkom call center is useless for getting settings, they only tell you to use default settings which are programmed into telkom routers. I'd like to know where a person is supposed to get the proper settings for this too

how long have you left it to try and sync?

I know even mine takes a while to do it

put your settings on ADSL2+ and ANNEX A/I/J/L/M and leave it for some time

Ya I sat with Afrihost for over an hour, he had me reset the thing 3 times and just keep putting in the same info, he didn't even know what Annex type it should be, I had to tell him A for Analogue.

I left it for about an hour last night, but I'll give it a try on ADSL2+. Thanks bud :)

hope you come right and it's sad to see when you are not the only 1 that wonders wtf the Asus stuff takes so long to sync, but switch to something else and it gets done in like seconds

I have the same router and struggled a bit as well when I first swapped out from a Netgear 2200v2. The Netgear would sync within +-20 seconds but the Asus took the best part of a few minutes and still do today which drove me up the roof the first time I installed it.

I called the ISP and Telkom that 1st night numerous times and fingered the reset button to death and thought fuk it, I'll return it to Takealot the next day..

Gave it one last go in the wizard and left it hanging while I had a few beers and after a good 10+ mins it synced! Modem gets switched off every night at about 10pm and would take about 3 mins every morning to sync... Miss the near instant connectivity of the Netgear tho...

It's a mission but what you guys have said is giving me a bit of hope, I'll reset it when I get home, set up all the settings so I know it's right then let it sit overnight tonight to try sync, maybe it just takes longer than I have the patience for :p

Thanks for the help and suggestions guys, it really is appreciated.

Reset it and do the wizard steps and let it sit... On adsl the modem configures everything automatically so no need to dig to deep just yet...

Another thing I hate about the modem is the bloody blue lights on it lights up the whole lounge like christmas tree at night.

If it works would you please leave your settings here for future reference?

This.

I really like the Asus networking products. I'v got a few of their modems @ clients sites, and I'v got 2x of their routers & 1x DSL model as a AP in my house. All work lekker.

Stayed up until about 11 last night trying all sorts of things to get it up, but to no avail. I was extremely hopeful after I did a firmware update but still nothing, however my fight continues, I'll keep trying it tonight and if by some miracle I get it working I'll post a guide :D

The firmware update brought that Echo setting I was taking about, set it to the same as the TP-Link but didn't seem to do much, I still kind of think that the ASUS isn't trying long enough to sync my line. After about the 7th try on the TP-Link, the sync light flashes like 15 times then it syncs, where the ASUS always only flashes 6 times, I wish there was some way I could force it to try and sync longer.

Thanks for the effort everyone.

Look under:

General > Traffic Mon - does it show your DSL line syncing? If its not there, then look under WAN , Administration of System. I know on their DSL routers you can check the DSL line on some 'spectrum analyser' graph.

Sorry I cant check exactly, as my DSL-N14u is just a AP in my environment as I'm running fibre using a Asus RT-AC1200G+ as the router, after the ISP's fibre modem.

ALso, have you asked your line provider to do a port reset while the Asus is plugged in?

Also, as per the below image, are you DEFIANTLY plugging the DSL line into the GREY port ?

lol wait, an RJ11 can fit into an RJ45 port? :p

last attempt would be to test it maybe at a friend's place because this is weird

I checked your stats with mine and that is all the same

maybe share some screens of your ADMINISTRATION > DSL SETTING and of your WAN>INTERNET CONNECTION as a last ditch effort

Yip, seen people plug the RJ11 into a RJ45 a good few times.

Thanks guys, still been having zero luck with this thing, all cables are definitely in the right place XD

Had Telkom reset the port while it was trying to sync, still nothing, I'll upload screens of my settings just to be sure :) A technician has been booked to come out and have a look, if no luck after that, the router is still under warranty so I'll take it back and have them test it

Feedback time on this, technician was there on Saturday, couldn't get it synced at all, his router as well as my old router syncs. So he shrugged it off as the router being faulty and went on his merry way. Can't really blame him though, the router was definitely working before I tried it on my line. The tech did say that I'm quite far from the exchange causing long sync times, which leads me again to the assumption that the Asus simply isn't trying long enough to sync my line. I'll take it to Makro when I get a chance and see if they can help me, I'm doubtful though.

I think I'll just end up using it through Ethernet WAN using my TP-Link as the modem and the Asus as my wireless router
