Hi fellow carbies, I wasnt too sure where to post this, I'm a student, 20y, and I'm studying software development. I found myself in a situation where I have to pay for my own studies and it's been really difficult finding something flexible cause my classes are 9-4 depending on the school day and I'm willing to work the rest of the night just so long I'm able to study.

so I was hoping you guys could help or advice me on how I can get out of this situation.

It's abit of a hard one so anything will help honestly.

No part-time option?

Location?

You won't like my advice. But I'm giving it.
Drop out of school, since it doesn't sound like a University.
Get a proper job and work. Study in the evenings and on weekends.
Use your money wisely and study properly.

The internet has everything you need to learn to be a Developer.
So take your situation, inverse it and then do that.

If you can't eat, you can't live.
If you can't put a roof over your head, you can't live.
If you don't work, you can't live.
You can study after hours though and you can be a kick-ass developer if you commit yourself.
The money you earn can be used to get an official certificate and that should be more than enough to get you a proper development job.

Improve your skills. Also improve your typing, grammar and your vocabulary. Coding is typing. If you can't type, you can't code.

I paid for my degree with a good old Study Loan from standard bank.

You just need someone to stand as guarantor for the loan.

Thanks @|tera| I'm gonna consider this cause I believe I'm capable of working and studying after hours.
I appreciate it.

I hope you do consider it and wish you the best.
Software development will provide a solid life for you, until you choose to retire one day.
You can't go wrong by becoming a developer, Just commit yourself. Work hard and do your best,

@lostelectrodes Aren't Standard banks requirements strict?

I applied for mine circa 2000 so they might be a lot stricter 21 years later.

Just try all the options.

You also work in an industry where you are almost guaranteed a job once complete.

You will need someone to guarantee the loan for you though. My parents could not so there was that hurdle to overcome.

Does the institution you are studying through not offer part-time classes (in the evening/on the weekends)?
Not sure about that but I will call in and ask.

Thats a long time ago Lol but I will go to the nearest standard bank tomorrow and try enquire.

Have you tried applying for NSFAS/Bursaries?

Also, Software Engineering | WeThinkCode_, my friend applied here, got into the boot camp, completed it, and got a job.
NSFAS does not Fund private institutions unfortunately.

I did come across The WeThinkCode website a couple times, I'll have a look and maybe send you a pm.

Where are you studying? You may want to avoid some private institutions as some are known to be expensive and useless, borderline scam.

I'm studying at Rosebank College.

So NSFAS will only do university/technikon, and the application process is broken (trust me I’m in the middle of trying to appeal).

Standard bank has 2 options. They have really broadened the scope of their study loans, they cover a lot more as of the last year, including textbooks accommodation and laptops etc.
they also have a programme that allows people to submit a sort of video motivation and allow individuals and companies to crowdfund their bursaries. I forget what it’s called but i think it’s a pretty new thing too.

Back then I used Absa. I needed a surety. Did an application and when it got approved. They deposited the money in my account. It was enough to get a PC , books etc. I can't remember getting asked proof of what I'm doing with the money. Is it different now?

I learned to code using books that I got from the library. It took like 3 months to get the most important stuff down. Granted, this was in 1994, so I'll explain. "Books" are words printed onto paper sheets, combined into a compendium to inform on a topic or provide entertainment.

You don't need to attend class to learn how to code. w3schools is free.

I almost forgot about this thread😅, Thanks for the great advice you guys have given me and all your knowledge really gave me more perspective and helped me figure a route I'd like to take.
I've decided to go the online route. I hope to one day get that dream job.
