I have a friend who sadly had to leave his studies (3rd year chemical engineering) due to financial constraints. He is currently waiting tables in order to save up and continue his studies. I truly commend him for pushing through in the circumstances, so I'd like to help him out with a job or internship that would get him more exposure to engineering.

I've been asking my boss if there's any way we can accommodate him with an internship or something similar, but we took on 3 people last year while they finished their final year of studies, so unless we get a jump in business we can't just hire him.

I'm wondering if anyone here in the engineering field can maybe help him out? If so, please let me know and I'll send through his CV.

Unfortunately we don't require chemical engineers in our business. I recommend he contact his faculty and ask for the list of bursaries. 3rd/4th year students can get bursaries through various companies and most faculties have lists of the businesses giving them. That's where he should start and work his way from there.

I thought Sasol offered bursaries to chem eng students?

They offer some of the best bursaries but you generally need a good academic record like 65% and above, have really low income or be of African descent.

The man in question has the last 2 of those. Wonder if they'll consider him - will get him to apply anyways.

Unfortunately, I saw this too late (should've browsed this new section on Carb). My previous employer was looking for 16 Chemistry/Chemical Eng. graduates/students (BSc, BSc Eng and ND/BTech) last month - Manager of the section is a good friend, and he gave me the heads up to inform any graduates I might know. Job posts closed 2 weeks ago :(

Hope your friend finds something - I'll keep an eye out as well, as I'm in the Science/Engineering industry.

Why not send him the details anyways, one of the other candidates may drop out? Can't really hurt.

Unfortunately, he as the manager can't influence the HR process once the post has been closed (only deals with the shortlisting, interviews and selection)
In the event that the 16 positions aren't filled, or there aren't enough suitable candidates, they will re-open the recruiting campaign.

What a pity. But thanks for the consideration. If it does happen, would you let me know?

So it seems things were more dire than my friend was letting me believe. It seems his sister (parents are dead as far as I know) has thrown him out the house and he has been crashing with friends while being a waiter. It seems that from tonight he will have nowhere to stay.

Man this country can suck ass sometimes.

I'm guessing that the "engineering specific" field can be widened quite significantly at this point to basically anything, as he seems really desperate just to make it through the next month. Please hit me a PM if you might have something. Huge thanks all round to everyone looking already.

Can't see you mentioning any location?

Try the Eskom website, I believe there is a bursary available at the moment.

Sorry about that - Pretoria / Centurion

Is your friend studying at TUKS. If he is he should really speak to the Faculty Advisor the lady working there will help him. Trust me I am a 3rd Year electronic engineering student and was in a similar position last year and she helped me find a bursary. Also Speak to the SRC they deal with financial matters as well as accomodation.

Just an update for those interested.

Friend has been deregistered from his course. Things got pretty bad and he ended up finding a place in PTA north for R1700/month - place looks sketchy but he has been hustling like mad it seems. Funny how his biggest fear went from failing varsity to speaking, because as a Zulu he's scared he'll be identified quickly and targeted.

But now some good news. He has started his own business in marketing. Has been starting with small things (like spazza shops and bakeries and being the connection) and it seems he has been hustling well enough to make it for the rest of May, which is awesome, and has even started the business registration process. Some of his ideas he's shared with me sound seriously optimistic, but it looks like he has a few connections already to back it up.

I just wanna say thanks for all the suggestions and help, especially to Smets
