Hello fellow Carbies

My birthday is coming up soon and I would really like to build myself a decent PC that will be relatively futureproof.

I do not have a ton of money to spend but I would prefer performance over appearance, I know the basics of putting a PC together but I am no expert, any suggestions / recommendations would be appreciated.

Starting point being either the 6800xt or 3080 and would like to build around that for 1440p gaming and video editing down the line. Additionally, a Mobo with Wifi and a 1TB NVMe M.2 for storage would be nice.

No components purchased as of yet as I would like to know what you would put together with the available budget so I have some options to consider.

Cheers!

Important question, do you also need to fit a screen into that budget? If you've got a screen, which one do you have? Same question for keyboard mouse, and headset?

Hi, why not look at a 3070? I just moved over to 1440p with my 3070 and have had no issues whatsoever, probably save you a lil bit of money and you can put it into a nice CPU (i5 13th gen is what I have and it has been awesome!).
I have definitely considered it but wasnt sure on how well it would hold up down the line compared to a 3080 or if there would even be much of a difference? Really keen on playing Starfield when it releases with decent frames.

Yo yo!

Excellent choice of birthday presents man. My birthday is also coming up soon so keep that in mind when you're ordering.

3080 - R10k

Then for the rest, something along these lines.

I do have a separate R4k budget for a monitor pending the sale of some items
For 4k you're just about getting a 1080p 165Hz screen new, or a very entry-level 1440p 144Hz screen used.

If I were you I'd either allocate more like 6k to the monitor and get a nice used 1440p, or stick to 1080p (sticking to 1080p will save you a lot in the long run).

Keyboard, mouse, and headset?

I have a 3070. It does the 1440p thing perfectly well right now, but if you're buying now, rather get something with more VRAM. So either a 3080 or a 6700XT or above. The 8GB VRAM is sometimes a bit of a limitation now, but will become more so in future.

Good build, except I think the Gigabyte P-GM was the exploding PSU? Or am I thinking of a different one?

Could well be actually, I'm not sure. I spent as little time on it as I could so there are most likely tweaks and improvements to be made.

Awesome! Thanks very much, in terms of GPU, what about 2nd hand? I have noticed some going for R8,5k although not often.

I realised now I have a 3070TI, but I don't even know if there would be a difference lol. I have tested streaming and recording and editing because I want to get into it more in free time and my Pc holds up well.

Can confirm. Boot up Cyberpunk2077, set everything to Ultra. Enjoy slideshow / stutter.

750w for 3080 fine? Thought you would need 850?
My brother is running a 3080 on a 650W PSU without issue. It's a little tight, but manages fine so a 750W should be okay. Depends on the CPU obviously and whatever else is in the PC, but it should be okay.

Just replace that SSD with a decent one:

NV2KC3000
Read MB/s3,5007,000
Write MB/s2,1006,000
Read IOPSToo embarrassing to give an official figure900,000
Write IOPSToo embarrassing to give an official figure1,000,000

They extremely high volume, they come and go rapidly. If they're out of stock they're likely to be available again within a day or two.

They were, long since resolved.

If you're still worried, same price:

This. I am really thinking of upping the budget here to R6k even if it takes a little longer. Sorted in terms of peripherals at least!

Secondhand can be okay, just buy from a trusted person on the forum (i.e. not somebody with 12 posts and 0 iTrader who demands payment before they ship, otherwise you will be spending your birthday alone without a PC.)

I think I may have forgotten to include a case actually. Phanteks P400A is great. There are others, but prices vary wildly and I'm not sure how set that budget is.

10% difference on some games

But both are 8gb cards 🤷‍♂️

I am leaning towards a 650w but was a bit concerned whether it would be enough. The Super Flower 750w does seem worth it.

The only other route for CPU is the AMD R5 7600 or 7600X but the montherboards are 10x more expensive than intel but might also last you longer in terms of AMD supporting motherboards over multiple generations

Yeah definitely understand, I really can't afford being overly risky here so would have to be a trusted carbie. Although I would love to build before bday I am willing to wait for good deals to maximise my budget.

Get a 750W. When you inevitably upgrade later on, you'll probably want the extra juice.

Most probably going to get roasted but this is what I initially put together (new, nothing used). Minus the GPU as I budgeted R8500 for a used 3080 / 6800xt.

AMD supporting motherboards over multiple generations
Tell that to anyone who bought into sTRX4 :/ And here we have Intel going on for a third gen of the same socket.

Ergo, future-proofing is a pipe-dream. One of the better examples is the GeForce 7950 GX2, which went from insanely overkill to outdated in a single generation as it lacked DX10 and CUDA support.

That's an outdated platform though. It's like going LGA1200. AM4 production is already starting to slow down, as can be seen by the somewhat tiny range of available motherboards. 103 to choose from, of which 84 are unavailable.

One big question, why would you spend more on a motherboard than CPU? :p

That SSD is also not great by any measure - savings on the motherboard could be put into a decent drive:

Seeing as he's buying new, I'm sure he'd like a warranty?

That's true but i reckon HEDT vs consumer cpus are a bit different light(But AMD did fuck up royally with their TRX Platform. I can technically use 5 different CPU's in my system

Yea true, but AMD have done well with their consumer level platforms. We got 5 years and 3 generations out of AM4 and they said we could expect similar from AM5. Time will tell, but it's a safer bet then Intel who historically give us 2 generations and then a new socket. What 3rd gen is Intel on for the same socket? I count 12th and 13th gen...
