So I been car shopping for a couple of weeks now. And I narrowed down my search to a few cars, among others, the Renault Kwid.
And I'm the kind of person that likes asking for advice.
Now the one thing everyone keeps telling me is "Don't buy Renault"

I remember my father told me way back that Renault parts are hard to find, and expensive to repair, though I called a few auto shops and asked around for the price of common parts; belts, filters, oil, brakes; and the verdict was its a bit more pricey than the Figo I'm currently driving, but no more than expected.

So my question is, why the hate for Renault?
Is it bad past experience?
Is there merit to it still?
Do you have a story to share perhaps?

I have a 2021 Renault Duster 1.5 dci Techroad

Absolutely love it, not a days issue done just over 35k on it from new, have had the sevices done on time,

Cant comment on the KWID, but the Dusters, and i have a few friends whom have older models in excess of 300,000km and they still going strong with almost no issues if they are looked after and services properly

Have you ever seen your car from the outside though?

I will tell you why I hate Renault and will never buy them again.

Bought a Capture 1.6t DSG for my wife (it was in 2018). I had the car for 6 months (23000km) and then we started having problems with the clutch shuttering while pull away and difficulty with rough gear changes. The dealer informed us that it is problem with the clutch and it will be R55k. They argued that it is because we drive the car in town and the dsg is designed for highway use which is bollocks. It took me +- 4 weeks of threats and getting Renault France involved to acknowledge that there is a problem with the car and that they will fix it. Sold the car back to them afterwards and lost R100k.

Ye and only heard a few comments about the look, but luckily i am not targetted like the guys with the ford rangers here at work

Those jokes fly on a daily basis,

But 1100km on a tank average, i am happy , will be happier if the diesel price comes down more though

Oh god it's real man. I have a diesel Figo and a full tank went from 600 bucks to over a thousand.
And I hear it might go up again...

Well I had a 2013 RS250 , and people told me the electrics would go one day. I didn't believe them until one day at a mall I locked my car and my wipers went crazy and my passenger door refused to lock. Had chaos with it for the next few weeks then decided to sell it.

Our neighbours bought a Kwid about 6 months ago. They drove it for about 2 weeks and sent it to the dealership in for a routine check. Dealership said they needed to replace a part.

Now 6 months later they are driving a Kia Picanto (@TRINITRON)

They were not able to get the required part within 4 months and they found various other issues so the neighbour said they'll rather just take the loaner Kia and be on their way.

He said the Kwid felt like a tuna can on wheels.

The Renaults parts are quite expensive and hard to come by, As I dont buy new cars this factors in for me.

They dont seem to be too bad as a few guys I race with have Renaults and they very rarely suffer mechanical failures. But for me the KWID is a pos much like the Etios from Toyota, I10, UP from Vw, Datsun.

Id honestly look at getting a better car even if its older and has more mileage.

This was a real quality car back in the day, the new gen is trash.

We bought a spec 1 Clio on release, its like 20 years old - still runs absolutely perfect.

My other option would be an older Ford Ecosport but my budget is getting real thin for that

I could possibly afford that if I lived in it. XD

Mentioning your budget would help a lot then.

I'd avoid a kwid either way, but especially a used one more so.
Any mileage on those should be considered as a 1:10 ratio to other cars, (so id say 3000km on a kwid == 30k km on other car)

Absolute max is 130K
But I'm not asking for advicr on buying a new car. (I do appreciate it though)

The swifts are awesome. Definitely a want. My boss showed me one for 160K.
But it's not through a dealer. So financing would be difficult

Had:
2016 Megane RS 265 Lux (80k on the clock)
2018 Clio 220 Trophy (45k on the clock)

Now:
2019 Sandero Stepway 900cc bouy! (like 30k on the clock)

No issues at all, with any of them
My Focus ST was poop!

French cars tend to have high parts prices and then availability tends to become a bigger problem. They also dont hold their value very well. Not many ppl want to pay decent money for a 3 to 5 year old Citroen, Peugeot, or Renault.

Honestly, in that price range and competitor to the Kwid, why not look at a Hyundai Grand i10? Longer wheelbase on the Hyundai so it will handle better, should also = more space in 2nd row. Hyundai has a 7 year / 200,000 km warranty. More of them (the i10) are sold so it will hold its value better. And because its not French.

So it doesnt have a white flag to surrender.

The Renault Kwid specifically is only slightly less safe than sleeping in a matchbox at the edge of a fire.

Rather buy a bicycle.
A coworker had a kwid... emphasis on 'had'...
Guy rear ended him at like 40km/h and wrote his car off sending both him and his mom who was in the front passenger seat to the hospital (her with a fractured vertebrae or something (back was fucked basically)).
So yea... safer to ride a bike in my experience...

So my Sandero Stepway 2016, decided that the headlight switch on the stalk will stop working while on December holiday.
Seems to be a common problem accross the Logan, Duster and Sandero.
Price for new stalk, R6500 minus fitment.
Found a generic on takealot for R900 with delivery and fitted it myself.

Service prices are decent, but cosmetic parts kill you.
I like the car, it's just very basic. If you temper your expectations you'll be pleasantly suprised.
The economy is bonkers though, if I don't drive like a hooligan I can get 750km - 800km on a tank (highway) and about 650-750 if it;s town driving.
