Carbie Car Guys!

Spent over 200k fixing the car as it was registered in the family business and my father Wouldn't sell. 80k for the engine, 10k for gearbox, 10k for clutch. 10k for disks pads. 35k wheels overall.

I would have rather got a gti or a 86. Shit for the with the works that’s gone into it I could have bought a 86.

I wouldn’t say there is a culture around the 1.4 TSi. The closest thing to that is that they melt pistons. I’m stuck with it and it’s basically new now so. It’s a POS engine with Standardized crank, rods and pistons. Only zrp make forget internals and when they arrived the rods wouldn’t fix.

Ah that makes sense.

I had a discussion with someone the other day that defended the idea of tuning a 1.2 or 1.4 TSI. Or an ecoboost 1.0l with a hybrid turbo. The Ford guy barely made the power of a stock ST and spent almost more money getting there. Now he has a tricked out 1.0l with hectic reliability issues and nothing near what an ST can do, cause suspension. Just buy the ST.

But yeah, given that you had the car and selling wasn't an option it makes sense. At least you agree given the money spent a GTI would've been a better buy. But those wheels man.... Looks damn fine.

Stealth tuning does amazing things with the Fiesta ST and PUMASPEED turbo kits. If you had those three options I would take the Il Ecoboost every damn time (in the manual of course) Fully forged, Upgrades galore. 5 years ago guys were making 250 HP with big turbos in them. My first car was a fiesta 1.4 NA and I was heartbroken it wasn't the ecoboost. Then 5 years later my sister gets her first car and its a fucking fiesta ecoboost:rolleyes: That 1l ecoboost is going to be the vintage retromod swap. I wanted to put one in my late grandfathers MGB GT but after promising it to me my entire life he willed it to his son who has no sentimental connection to the car and is now selling it,

Is there an Afrikaans saying fro a stubborn ostrich who sticks his head in the sand and refuses to listen to rational advice?
Wouldn't have a clue. Not big on riddles nor am I near proficient in Afrikaans.

I bet you're about to enlighten us :)

Is there an English saying for a guy that spends a small fortune modding a 2013 Golf 1.4l, blowing a gearbox and then 200k to fix it post mods and post accident and now believes it's fixed now and basically new?

Rational advice? Each to their own - not going to debate your choices - but rationality isn't a word usually open to debate IMO

You've got it slightly wrong. The car was up until recently registered in the business's name. I can't speak Afrikaans for shit but the man with his head in the sand and in fingers in his ears was my father. Every mechanic said to get rid of it but nooooo, stubborn irrationality. The 200k is rough total since the start of the forged engine rebuild, tune, and mods including the gearbox and excess on the accident that wasn't my fault etc etc and accident. When I say its basically new that's because there are almost no original parts or panels that came with the car off the factory. That's why I said its basically new, The worst part is he runs and aftermarket automotive spares company...

EDIT: Hence absolutely zero rationality occurred.

Does it really?
:D
Only the ' registered in the family business ' part. Guess he had little say on what gets done and why? :poop:

I would never mod a non performance car for performance though. Then again I'm pretty much done with modding cars for speed anyway, cause bikes go brrrr.

Ah! That clears that up - my bad.

Just one question though - and I'm probably missing the obvious - why would anyone mod a 1.4l Golf to such extremes? :D
Not sure what the stock kw on it is or should be but 114kw after all is said, done and paid just doesn't seem worth it . . IMO

Just my thoughts

Can't agree more. I just don't see the sense. Was flirting with an idea of slapping on a dual turbo setup on my car - applied an iota of pragmatism and realized there's actually absolutely no point and certainly no need. Going to enjoy the car in the state it rolled off the production line . . .as the car gods intended :)

HAd to rebuild the engine with forged pistons because the factory ones as POS and consumed 5l of oil in 240km. So the engine was done.. So full engine rebuild. Downpipe and conservative tune and basically everything is stock except the wheels and tires. The MK7 came in 2 trims;: the Comfortline and the Highline here. Comfortine has 90kw and Highline has a bigger turbo and puts out 110kw. Seeing as we were rebuilding anyway, I thought I might as well make it the best 1.4 possible. Called up Mr turbo and to do a hybrid o the turbo it wasn't a bad price at all so hopefully next year. HYbrid should get to 150+ kw easy, the turbos on these cars are like miniatures. As for the reason to mod them. They handle amazingly, light, and fun cars. Sure it's not going to be a GTI but they're fun to drive. I'd trade it for a white Toyota 86 in a heartbeat though.

Woosah, guys

Secondly: Gaaaaaahd do I miss my ed35... For about 2 years I've contemplated getting another. with st2 mods they are proper quick.

Will of course come say hi.

I decided a long time ago (after snapping the cambelt on my TDi) that I was going to buy the power I want without needing to mod. This ed35 had the rear silencer changed and that's where the mods stopped. I can understand the appeal of mods for straight line speed, but on the track I'm pretty sure the front wheels won't like too much more than it already has. If porra64 joins again this year, you should see his R. That thing shifts with alarming pace.

Kamaaan. Just do it.

Nice to see the VWC forum old timers on Carbonite :ROFLMAO:

After my polo tdi and mk5 gti I was over extensively modding my cars, But basic st2 mods will always happen.
Trust me... ed35 with dp, intake and sw is a little rocket. cant wait to mod the s3 as well... but motorplan :(

I've managed to go 4 years without scratching that itch [emoji1787] I'm actually trying to find a nice HR 350Z to replace it.

Have the 370Z and wanted to turbo it - decided against it. The appeal of twin turboing is absolutely there esepcailly after seeing some youtube vids of a modded 370z obliterating absolutely everything, but I have no need to beat any super cars in a straight line. Just don't see the appeal. Plus, modding has inherent risks and there's always half the folks that blow out their engines or gearboxes or turbos or some other very expensive down the road fix post mod that needs done. Such a shame to fuck up a nice car.
Seeing folks mod their cars for amounts of cash worth more than the car itself. The way I see it, you want to go faster between robots, with all the money spent on mods, just buy a faster car

That being said and seeing the appeal of learning something new and acquiring new skills along the way, I too would buy a HR 350z for a bargain bin price for DIY modding  More for the mechanical/engineering education of it all than to head off to the tracks or public road stupidity like most of the modded community does. Nothing quite as stupid, hilarious and a testament to lack of common sense as seeing these ricer cars sending it from robot to robot.

Just my thoughts on the subject and I get the whole "boys will be boys" thing :)

Has anyone heard of Madi electric turbo?
Any reports on performance, does it actually work?

I am going to keep the 350Z stock too :ROFLMAO: It will be my first rear wheel drive car, so until I learn how to handle it, I don't want to end up the wrong way when boost kicks in. Also with VW's there is plenty of support locally for modding. The jap cars I feel have well kept secrets in terms of trustworthy mechanics and so on. I actually wouldn't mind a 370Z either but clean second-hand manuals seem to be like hen's teeth and a brand new one will set me back about R700k+. I'm not sure what happened in the last few years but car prices have become ridiculous.
