so, ive been playing a little
cool!0.4, I have a 0.2 but no need in my view this is pretty clean
I'd like to get myself a FDM 3D printer with 250-300mm cubed build volume and enough rigidity to print decent looking PLA models at "fast" print speeds.
After a quick search, I saw that the Sidewinder X1 and CR10S Pro v2 are often recommended to first timers. However, I'm starting to wonder if I should just DIY it since I'd probably end up upgrading a lot of parts on either of the aforementioned printers. I suspect that the experienced guys on here will say don't DIY if you're new to 3D printing, but I'll be okay with the technical bits (I've designed my sim rig in Fusion and had parts waterjet/laser cut). I also have enough tools to get by (Makita metre saw, Mitutoyo measuring tools, etc.).
I don't want to DIY it from "first principles" and would prefer to work off an existing design. I'm aiming for a budget of lets say under R13k without much corner cutting upfront. So with that in mind, which printer designs should I be looking at to see if this is worth pursuing?
Voron 2.4 looks good at a quick glance, but it needs a lot of ABS printed parts. I'd prefer to use waterjet cut aluminium plates.

I contacted the guy and he is busy building me a machine now. Well priced. He builds all his machines custom, but has some basic "kits" that he has started to assemble. He is busy prepping to start making a local brand. Pop him a message. If you not in a rush, he will be able to sort you out with a machine for your needs.

Build a delta if you want to tinkerWhat sorta design is he building for you? Admittedly I haven't read up much on 3d printing, but fixed or moving Z axis beds seem like the way to go in an ideal world (especially if you're going custom/DIY).
To be honest, I'm not the type to have someone else do it for me. Would take the satisfaction out of it. I'm a tinkerer at heart.
The sidewinder X1 can currently be bought from Banggood for under R10k, including shipping and customs "insurance" (never used that before so not sure how that works).I'd like to get myself a FDM 3D printer with 250-300mm cubed build volume and enough rigidity to print decent looking PLA models at "fast" print speeds.

If I didn't get that 2nd hand Ender 5 I would have bought that X1
I've ordered from them numerous times. Just so happens that yesterday a new package arrived from them. Not a printer size thing, but I've not had a single issue with them to date. Thanks bud. I just watched a review on the X1. Seems like a great "base" to work off. Again, with my limited knowledge, direct drive makes a lot more sense to me than bowden.
I'm waiting for a recently placed Banggood order to arrive safely before I entertain the thought of ordering from them again.
if you can get a delta working, the rest is easy ive fixed 2 deltas recentlyLol, I need it to work eventually. Kinematics seem intense with Delta, so I may struggle to debug. CoreXY looks reasonably simple.
boden vs direct drive, old debate, each has their own preference, I use both, both has their place, some will say, but flex works better on direct drive, ive had more issues with flex on direct drive then on boden🤷♂️Thanks bud.
