Hey all

It has come time to put my little donkey out to pasture.

I’m looking at a nearly new car for R260K or so.

Mazda 3, Ford Focus, Fiesta. Something along the lines of a good hatchback.

Insights?

Mazda 3 is an excellent choice. Easily the best car I have driven before, although illegally. Best bet is to find a demo/used one, as you can get a upgraded model for the price of a stock new one.

The Mazda 3 2.0 is my first pick of the lot so far, Demo or second hand. The smaller engines aren’t good and the 0-100 times are eternal.

Mazda 3, easily for me. We have the cx-5 atm moment and I've driven the Mazda 2 and both are great. I have not driven the 3, but from a Mazda perspective you won't go wrong.

would probably choose Focus from above mentioned ones! Anyways, good luck finding your vehicle ;):giggle:

Go drive all the cars that you like or would consider in your price range.
See what they offer, how they drive, creature comforts etc that you looking for.

Have a look at running costs/maintenance costs and general wear and tear items that you could or would replace at some point
Brakes
Clutch
Etc

Compared and see what weighs out best for you

If you want a car that lasts

Get the Mazda 3. Have one currently (2.0l Auto), and its a great car. Android auto is expected to be launched early next year and any Mazda with a screen can be upgraded.

Had a Focus and its shit. Kept breaking down. (2013 TDci powershit)

Ford cars do not last. Also, apprantly, the 1.0l ecoboost engines dont last after warrenty. According to the service techinicans there.

Sorry a bit off topic, but each time I call about auto, I get the standard response of, Mazda has these features as optional extras, so we won't be supporting auto.

Back on topic, something to consider for Mazda though, most things are optional extras.

Dont know. I called my branch and headoffice. Says that it will be launched but cant give date. It only launched in Europe last month and our local guys went for traning 2 months ago.

It is an optional extra. So we will have to pay for the addition (About 5k I would guess) or buy the parts from Ebay and install.

If you look at the spec sheet, a ton of stuff is standard.

My mechanic told me to stay away from the Ford Ecoboost engines. Terrible reliability. Expensive to fix.

Have a look at the Kinsey Report for 2017 to get an idea of running costs/repair costs. They basically compile a list of prices every year for commonly replaced parts of popular cars, and then work out the cheapest. Only some popular models are in the report, but it will at least give you some idea of costs across the different brands.

Also, Google around there are sites that list manufacturing issues with cars. I told a mate to do this before he bought a Golf 6 Tsi thingy, 2 odd years later he has massive and costly issues. Gets a 3rd party to repair , then more issues, etc etc. I then lookedup the car model and year, and boom, there was a recall for most of the issues he had, which would've been taken care of for free or very little cost.

My Mazda ettude did ~350k KM before I sold it. I'll def look at a Mazda 3 / 6 if I get another car.

Also check this guy, he takes no prisoners!

Also starting to look at replacement hatchback, considering the Honda Civic.
Not the most mainstream & flashy choice, but damned reliable

Just note that Honda parts are very expensive

Agreed. Pretty damn good quality cars from my tiny tiny knowledge of cars. These are the BMW / Merc of Asia in terms of part pricing.

S'true but they rarely break so you never really need to replace anything.
Parents are on their second Civic which is pushing 10 years, only replaced oil & filters on it. And petrol

Most cars these days the parts are expensive... and couple with the fact that modern electronics in cars can result in one symptom or fault but cause by 4/5 different things.

Sometimes people are quick to diagnose and do it incorrectly and it ends up costing a fortune in parts. Example recently had a look at a TDI that the customer complained had no power to go anywhere. Been to 3/4 mechanics with scanners and replaced half a dozen parts and the car is still the same..
After changing all the vacuum hoses(cost of R300) the car is back to its old ways and it wasn’t a electronic sensor at all

That said with parts you need to shop around and have a look. For example my daily is a 2003 Audi A4 And after 240k km the clutch decided to give up.
One placed quoted me 11k for the clutch/flywheel assembly.
After shopping around I found a clutch kit for this car for 4k.

My personal bet would be a Honda Jazz.

I know it might not be all that in terms of speed but holy damn they're reliable. My GF has a 2008 model that she uses offroad around 30% of her day. The damned thing has 200k's on it and still moves although her interior might not be as nice but thats due her using the magic boot all the time as she has a venue.

I have a 2015 model and I'm more than happy after discovering features that I didn't know about xD

I had a 2014 Honda Civic Executive. I yearn for it every day.

I'm a die hard opel guy, but i would hands down do a mazda, my wife has the mazda 2 and that has only been an absolute pleasure, gets 17km/l and i only changed the first set of tyres on 110000k and for the rest only annual services and it's sitting on 230000km now and still not missing a beat!

Do yourself a favour and also just go look at the Kia Rio, especially if you plan to buy a manual car.

Otherwise there is of course the common VW Polo option but like I say it's pretty common. Solid car but a little boring for being everywhere.

Isn't that rather a case for shitty mechanics though and not really the car's fault?

If anything the modern means of fault codes and sensors should make it easier than every to fault find. The problem is due to the motorplan farse we don't have mechanics any more but rather "replacement engineers".

Obviously there are situations where a fault code leads people down the wrong path, but at the very same time they can also often fix a problem in five minutes that would have taken hours of diagnoses in days gone by.

So it's a catch twenty two for every situation.

They don't seem too outrageous with most things (my folks have a Jazz) and a good mate had an Accord and now a CR-Z.

However the thing to watch with Honda, and this really applies to any modern car is never ever to do your brakes and such with the dealership.

When they say it's time and give you that enormous quote telling you how it's urgent and a safety hazard...ignore them and take it to a third party.

Odds are it's not even time to replace anything yet and if it is they'll do it for 1/3rd the price. Also there is no warranty concern doing non-service parts elsewhere.

Something in the lines of this:

I’m just looking at the new price of reasonable cars with a reasonably good annual salary.

Now I’m wondering how the fuck people can afford a brand new 318i at R520 000.00.

My friend raised a good point, what about depreciation? By how much will the Focus or Mazda 3 depreciate in 3 years time when I plan to move to Germany? I’m not sure that’ll matter too much since it’s hardly an expensive car but still.

Oh and the smartest thing you can do is buy a flat or house before a new car. Then extend the mortgage. Car loans have a higher interest rate and you can’t pay it back sooner (~16% for a car versus 10% for a home).
