After overhearing a conversation about how terrible it is that TrueCaller uploads your contacts list to their servers I felt compelled to start this conversation.
Let's use TrueCaller, Google and Steam as examples. These are all entities that gather personal information about you; your name, age, gaming habits, hardware specs, location, movement patterns, browsing history, phone contacts, credit card details, home address...the list is endless.
So what?
The companies are reputable and generally have strong security in place. If they're going to share your data with other companies then they tell you, and those companies are in turn also reputable and secure.
Even if there is a data breach of some sort, so what? "Oh no! Some kid in the Ukraine has my location history, PC specs, email address, a hashed password and pictures of my dog! My world is about to end!" :|
Unless you're using that same email address and password for your online banking it means nothing, and even if you do the chances of that kid using the stolen data like that is minuscule. The chances of him doing so before you change your password? Even less.
What am I missing? Why are people so worked up about sharing data like this?
